My wife and I were visiting from Houston, TX, and we actually felt we'd be dissappointed coming from a state who's Mexican food is the best in the land. However, we were greatly suprised with OTMC!!
The tortillas are fabulous and served too hot to handle, Texas could learn a lesson from these babies. We had guacomole and ceviche as starters and both were outstanding. Having been to El Agave two nights before where the avacodos were hard as green pears, we were concerned but ordered anyway. It couldn't have been better! The ceviche was very good, but not excellent. It contained only white fish (like the munu stated), but had great flavor and plenty of fish, unlike those that try to strech it by adding too much tomatoes and onion.
My wife designed her own plate with a chicken enchallida, a cheese enchallida, and a tostado. She was extremely impressed and didn't leave a morsel. I had the carnitas platter; unlike Texas carnitas it didn't have any sauce served on it, but the pork as tasty as it was.
After two margaritas each and the meal described above we walked out for $65 (including tip), feeling we had just finished a meal fit for a "Mexican" king. Two nights before we left El Agave with a $144 tab, and not nearly as impressed with the food quality.
Again, this comes from a couple of Texan's who eat Mexican food in restaurants at least 3 times a week. Next time in San Diego, we'll have OTMC on our agenda for a couple of nights.
Pros: Food, Service, Value for Money
Cons: Parking, Wait, Noisy

We went to Cafe Coyote in Old town on our trip to San diego. This Cafe was so packed with people all the time, we wanted to try it out and it was the very best! Tortillas are freshly made here in front of us and their salsas are just heavenly! We had the quesadillas, tortillas and for dessert we tried their crispy icecream.Delicious! We got some tortillas togo too.A nice place to wander around for tourists and have dinner here.

More
If you ever go to the South Beach Bar and Grille, DO NOT order the side of rice and beans with your tacos. Sure, they're the best Mexican beans and rice you'll probably ever have either in the US or in a Mexico resort town, but it'll only make you too full to order a third taco, which is what you should do instead. Best. Tacos. Ever. No, seriously. Frankly, the mahi mahi taco was one of the two or three best things I've ever eaten in my life. Wife was almost as enthusiastic about the lobster taco, which only easily cracked her top ten. Oh, and the fish tacos are less than $3 a piece and the lobster less than $4 a piece. She hates cooked fish, so she didn't try the mahi mahi, but I did try the lobster. The lobster was very, very good. The mahi mahi is divine.
Pros: stunning seafood tacos, great dive ambiance, friendly service
Cons: can be loud, terrible parking

More of a Tex-Mex chain than anything, On The Border features some interesting menu items, such as their shrimp scampi, which I liked. I didn't care for their sour cream covering alot of their dishes. The chips and salsa were good. A bit pricey for what it was.

El Fandango is a great Mexican restaurant! They have an outdoor patio area for dining, great food and margaritas, good service and very reasonable prices. It's in the heart of Old Town, which is fun.
