I grew up in Washington, DC where my dad was curator at the National Zoo my whole life. So, I know zoos!! The San Diego Zoo is outstanding. It is worth every dime purchasing a zoo membership. In the summertime, we go to the nighttime zoo and enjoy the spectacular extras like the painters and the living statuary. Albert's Restaurant is great for a nice glass of wine and light meal, making it worth the visit all the more!

I really liked this place because as a girl who grew up in the country, I have a profound appreciation for wildlife and nature in general. There are exhibitions all year round on such diverse subjects as wildlife, fossils, insects, fruit flies and DNA, and even chocolate. A must see for all people visiting San Diego.

San Diego Museum of Arts is a great museum to visit. It’s so interesting and they have the rarest artifacts. I love this museum because it’s easy going and very friendly. It was one of the best times I had ever had at a museum which you have to admit is very hard to do at a museum but the people are great and everything turned out really cool!

The Museum of Photographic Arts has to be my favorite museum within Balboa Park. The photographs on display are simply amazing. Currently on display is an exhibit entitled "Landscapes at 100 Megapixels" with unbelievable landscape shots that are worth the price of admission alone. The museum offers student/senior/AAA discounts, and also has a nice gift shop with its own vintage photo booth. If you're at Balboa Park, please stop by!

This spooky haunted house is nestled in the historic part of Old Town. Old Town is fun enough to visit on it's own but adding the Whaley house just makes it better.
The Whaley house can be quite hokey but at any given time during the week you'll find classes of school kids taking the tour. It's an old tradition that even I remember doing.
The place is quite haunted and if you get too scared you can walk down the path and grab a bite to it.

The Japanese Friendship Garden is small, but the admission is inexpensive, and I've found that the benefit of visiting after a long, stressful week is priceless. This garden is kept in pristine condition, and the other statues and sculptures are kept to a minimum. This leaves the space uncluttered and allows for walking without such things getting in the way and interrupting the calming atmosphere. I go early in the mornings on Saturday to avoid the weekend rush. This is a charming little garden and a great alternative to visiting the park.

By the name, people probably think this is just an Asian art museum, but it’s more than that. Of course they have some traditional Asian art, but they also have some contemporary art. The most amazing thing is that the contemporary art are from artists who take traditional objects and present them in ways that make the art contemporary. For example, right now they have on display wood, paper, and bamboo, all traditional objects, but the artist display it in such a way that it's contemporary art. Worth a visit.

This museum spans two ships, the most recognized being the Star of India. Located on the waterfront, the museum is crammed with wonderful maritime history. You could easily spend hours here, if history or sailing is of interest to you. Although not at the top of my list for where to bring guests, it is a great place to visit and I've been numerous times.

Definitely a nexus of strange and interesting energies. Despite the flurry of tourists on weekends, and all the ghost tours and hype, my money is still on the Whaley House as being on genuinely haunted grounds. Catch a whiff of the sweet perfume drifting over the night air - flowers or scent of a female ghost? You decide... Pull your digital camera out of your pack and snap a few pix late at night in the back garden behind the great old house when all the air is solemnly still - you never know what you'll catch... mists, odd lights... And even if you're a skeptic, you'll have fun meeting other mere mortals on the dark grounds... Or take a walk around Old Town, feel the sensations, atmosphere, music, sights and sounds... grab a bite to eat in one of the many local cantinas or grills. Thumbs up to this historical place, especially for the ambience!
