Everybody keeps calling it cookie cutter and a huge corporation...but that's so Portland, and I am *so* tired of Portland. I LOVE Starbucks. I proudly admit that. I love how simple their crap is and I have the snobby coffee shops in Portland...I have yet to have a good coffee drink at any other coffee shop. Pros: Simple stuff. more

Terrible 6/8/2003

The coffee is burnt, the prices are a rip-off and the servers are dumb. Why would you go here when you can go to Coffee People, Stumptown or anywhere else where the coffee tastes good? Do the world a favor and don't give your money to a questionable corporation for a second-rate product. Pros: Everywhere Cons: Bad coffee, High Prices more

Good coffee 1/27/2003

Love the atmosphere, knowing exactly what quality I'll be getting, knowing that it will be good coffee. Pros: Relaxing atmosphere, Good meeting place, Good coffee more

Burnt Beans 1/15/2003

Starbucks is a great place to go, clean, friendly service, great atmosphere. Unfortunately, they burn (rather than simply roast) their beans. Admit it, the coffee leaves a bitter aftertaste that should not be there! Someone should get a clue, what a waste of great coffee and a great facility. Anyone who gets to taste really correctly roasted coffee, forever after does not like Starbucks. Pros: Clean, Friendly Service, Nice Facilities Cons: Burnt bitter taste, Overpriced more

I like them frappachino things 12/19/2002

Carmel Frappachinos are the greatest at starbucks! Everyone should have one!!!! more

Bad Joe 11/17/2002

Starbucks may have been one of the first big coffee houses, but it's reputation far out does it's coffee's taste appeal. Pros: Variety of pruducts Cons: Flavor of coffee more

Not on my block 11/7/2002

Starbuck suffocates Portland. Try Cafe Uno or Stumptown for something decent. more

You've got to be freaking kidding 10/27/2002

1. Overpriced. 2. Cookie cutter. 3. Stupid names for drink sizes that aren't descriptive. 4. Crappy customer service. 5. They roast all the beans the same way -- black as burnt toast! 6. All the atmosphere of a McDonald's 7. Why are you supporting Seattle? 8. Just say no to strip-mall developments! 9. Pros: they're everywhere Cons: they're everywhere, burnt beans more

Starbucks #1?! Puh-leeze!! 10/25/2002

Over-roasted, over-priced, and mega-corporate with a take-over-the-world complex as big as McDonald's!!! more

The Best 10/19/2002

My husband and I love Starbucks. We purchase the whole bean espresso for at home use besides stopping in at Starbucks from time to time. Pros: friendly staff, reasonably priced more

plague of the earth 10/14/2002

It is so surprising that Portland, home of small businesses would support such a major name. It's popular only for convenienc and laziness on the consumers part. Customers aren't willing to take the time to search for the nearest locally owned coffee stand or shop which is sure to be within walking distance of any starbucks if it is fortunate enough to still be breathing. Private coffee shops serve better coffee at an extremely more reasonable price than any Plague of the Earth (Starbucks) Pros: smells like coffee Cons: expensive, crowded more

Starbucks is not the best! 10/14/2002

Every Starbucks is the same! The people working there are generally impersonal and snotty. The coffee isn't necessarily the best and their prices are very high. As a general rule I will avoid going to Starbucks whenever possible. This is not to say that I hate Starbucks, just that I don't prefer Starbucks. Pros: Quality Product, Convenient Cons: Inconsiderate Staff, High Prices more

Starbucks employee turned junkie 10/14/2002

must I say anything other than Yummy? I think that pretty much sums it up Pros: friendly employees, great coffe, great atmosphere Cons: long lines more

Nasty, bitter, expensive 10/14/2002

Starbucks is the best place for coffee... if you think McDonald's is the cute little bistro down the street with the delectable homefries and cozy ambience! The coffee is almost as bitter and nasty as the underpaid grunts who work there! Starbucks is woefully overpriced and over-rated. Why the hell is a shot of espresso $1.30, but if you want hot WATER added to it, the price jumps to $1.60!! And what's with all those socially- and environmentally friendly brochures on the counter about how great starbucks is for the world? You won't even recycle your paper cups! I avoid Starbucks like the plague if I can, but lets face it, we're addicted to caffeine and starbucks is on every freaking corner. The only place they haven't set up shop is in my kitchen, which is obviously more than can be said for some of you out there.... Pros: ubiquitous Cons: bitter coffee, rude tired grunts, EXPENSIVE more

capucino got your tongue? 10/14/2002

The reason I like starbucks is because I like coffee and I like it done right. I have been to Starbucks in 7 states and 4 countries and every time I order something I can expect the same drink, much better than hit and miss places. Sometimes you have to watch the register, because there are different ways to price say, a triple tall americano, but it is always good. Admitedly, ambience could use some work, though. Pros: consistent drink, fast, inexpensive Cons: felt "barcoded", inconsistent pricing, can be too "corpo" more

High priced....ok service 10/14/2002

I think you can much of a better deal going to a local coffee shop and get the same if not better lattes and mochas. Starbucks is way expensive and the servie is just plain ok...with all the people standing around waiting for their coffee there is not time to get indiviudal attention. Pros: trendy, famous brand, lots of flavors Cons: expensive, expensive, expensive more

Old Reliable 10/14/2002

You alway know what you are getting at starbucks. The quality is always above average. The product quality is consistant from store to store. I do get tired of the employee's bad arrogant attitudes. Pros: consistant quality, good quality Cons: bad employee attitude, overpriced more

Reliable! 9/23/2002

Starbucks is consistant, reliable, and always gives me a good cup of coffee. While I like a funky interesting place, Starbucks gives me what I want almost wherever I want in Porltnad. For that everyday latte when you don't know what the neighborhood best place is, Starbucks serves grande greatness. Pros: consistant more

Bitter coffee, generic coffeehouse 9/20/2002

I'm shocked that Starbucks is the audience winner for 2002. They all look alike - why would anyone prefer that over an individual coffeehouse that makes real coffee?? Find a place that serves illy coffee - it's the best I've tasted yet. more

Not a chance! 9/19/2002

Starbucks has been over rated and over priced for a long time. Their coffee is bitter and often burned, and their mocha-type drinks are way too sweet. Added to the fact that there are way too many of them (seven between my house and my work, which is not that far away...), I think they don't even deserve to be on this list. more
