Signature dish disappoints 5/11/2010

I didn't get the delicious spice separation of flavors on their signature dish. Nice atmosphere. Nice staff...just mediocre dish....Next time I'l try another more

Best Indian food in the NW 12/12/2009

The food here is consistently good and the portions are large enough to be had for 2 meals. Their service, too, doesn't dissapoint. Their prices are pocket-friendly and the ambience is comparable only to that of an upscale restaurant. Pros: Food, service, ambience, parking validation more

Great Indian food at affordable prices 11/14/2009

I have been going to Indian style restaurants for years with my family. I stumbled upon Shalimar about a year ago through one of my co-workers and we have made it our choice of lunch spots ever since. The service is incredible from the moment you walk in until the moment you walk out. Combine that with the variety of food selection at an affordable price and you have a winner already. To top it all off, the atmosphere makes you forget that you are in the heart of the University District. I advise going during lunch to take advantage of their Penny Pincher menu. Have a good meal! more

Great Halal food 10/10/2009

Excellent halal food. I would loove to eat there. Pros: Halal more

My Favorite Indian Restaurant in the NW 4/7/2008

Indian cuisine has always been one of my favorite types of food. The unusual spices, fresh naan bread, and rich desserts are what attract me to it. From my experience as an Indian food ""connoisseur? I have found that most Indian restaurants are about the same in quality. Thus, they are never terribly bad, nor particularly exceptional in food quality, service, or restaurant environment. There are two restaurants that come to mind that do not fit this pattern. They are ?Shalimar? and ?Cedars?. Everyone seems to rave about Cedars but honestly, it is just as good as Shalimar. In fact, Cedars costs a bit more, is terribly overcrowded (to the point of annoyance), and apparently, is run by a rather unpleasant man who does not treat his employees with respect. The food at Shalimar tastes just as good, and does not come with all the negativities listed above. My personal favorites are the tender lamb vindaloo, zesty garlic naan, fruity mango lassy, and of course, for dessert, the rich rice pudding. On top of the amazing food, Shalimar has a truly beautiful interior. Peaceful music, traditional Indian decor, and pleasant staff make for a great experience. Honestly, I believe I am addicted to this restaurant. I bring my friends here, treat people to dessert on special occasions (more so to treat myself), and cannot survive one month without going here. Considering that I am a poor college student who takes great consideration when paying more than $7.00 for a meal, that?s saying a lot. Pros: Delicious food, beautiful restaurant, consistently good more

Delicious! 6/23/2007

I frequent Shalimar based on its proximity to my office. Their lunch menu is great, and reasonably priced. I think the dishes they offer are outstanding. I always find the staff to be kind and hospitable. After moving to a new location just up the block from the old one, I find the environment to be great - beautiful wood, a calming fountain, etc. With the abundance of Indian restaurants in the U-District, these are the reasons I select Shalimar over the others. Pros: Friendly staff, ambience, great naan! more

Beautiful Atmosphere!! Great Taste!! 6/20/2007

this restaurant is gorgeous!! it sets the scene for a perfect meal. there is even a waterfall inside the restaurant! The decore and atmosphere take you to another place. the food was Scrumptious, they use just the right amount of spice too, so that the food is full of unique indian and pakistani flavor! i order chicken japuri all the time, i believe its one of the many amazing didhes on the menu. As a matter of fact i've tried most everything on the menu; everything has a unique flavor. Thier drinks are also very good too, like the mango lassi, which is a thick smoothe like drink, has a burst of mango flavor that is very quenching. The service was great too! They were very attentive and got the food to the table in a perfect amount of time! overall eating at this restaurant is an adventure to somewhere else, a party for your taste buds, and so much more! more

bad food, service is even worse & they tried to scam on the bill!!!! 5/31/2007

We found this place because they advertised in the Entertainment book. We read their menu outside and some things looked really good. Cons: bad food, awful service and dishonest billing more

service leaves a lot to be desired 3/31/2007

And other than that, I have no qualms. The last couple of times that I ate at this well-decorated establishment, I've had to wait for quite a while for everything from a server, to a straw. I must say though, that when my server finally arrived (and I've had the same one for the last couple of visits), she was pleasant and sweet. I enjoy the garlic naan as it's thick and doughy with lots of flavor. Sometimes burnt, but nothing that I can't look over =]. Also the vegetarian eggplant dish is just so spicy and flavorful. This business is a definite must-try when you are in the U-District area! Pros: interior decorating, naan Cons: parking more

It's good 11/16/2006

We've been to shalimar many times. I think that the service is pretty good. Love their curry. The chai is also good. This might sound weird, but I love their rice...they have the best rice in my opinion. The restaurant has a pretty good atmosphere...their music is cool. Pros: Good food, good service Cons: can' t say its the best indian food more

Love it! 11/2/2006

I can't believe the bad reviews! Shalimar is wonderful! They just moved to a MUCH bigger location (up 45th half a block) and can now accomodate big parties... someday I'll have my wedding rehearsal dinner there! The waitstaff is very kind and thoughtful. Lunch entries are very affordable, the naan is puffy as a cloud, and their tandori prawns (my favorite dinner to order) are to die for. I moved out of the U-District but still plan on making plenty of trips to Shalimar. Pros: Consistently great food, nice new location, service more

Average Indian is great for Seattle 3/7/2005

We've had such trouble finding even decent Indian in Seattle that reliably average Indian is taken as some sort of positive development. Until we find the best Indian food Seattle has to offer, Shalimar will have to do. Pros: Convenient more

I love this place 3/5/2005

This is yet another place on the Ave that my coworkers and I frequent, for birthday and just-because lunches. We all love it. The food is by default fairly mild, but if you ask for it spicy, it has quite a kick. The ambience is nice and laid back, and the service is excellent. They're always able to accomodate our large group (10+), and the prices are fabulous. There's also a large selection of vegetarian entrees, along with the usual chicken, lamb, etc. Pros: Great food, ambience, prices more

Not traditional Paki food... 7/19/2004

My fiance and his family (in from Pakistan) all went to this restaurant and were severly disappointed as to the quality of the food. This was definately not Pakistani cuisine. The spice tea was undrinkable. The food itself was of small portions and not very spicy. The chutney was an odd consistancy and not tasty. And even with such a large order and high dinner cost, they even ""padded"" the bill and overcharged us by almost $5.00 which they claimed was an ""addition"" mistake (which can be seen since they do it by hand). Overall, we have decided never to return (as the experience for my in-laws was almost horrific in how bad it was). We have found several other halal restaurants in the area which serve food closer to a North Indian/Pakistani flavoring which we enjoy. Cons: , Small portions, Poor Service more
