This is one of the last great family owned businesses in Portland. Roakes has been in Portland since your grandparents were kids. The Columbia location may not be as pretty as the original ""drive in"" design, but its got a lot of heart and amazing food. You can feed the entire family there and everyone is happy. They carry everything from chicken strips to the Nordius Maximus (2 half pound, never frozen, beef patties, 3 eggs, 1/4 lb of ham, 4 slices of bacon, burger spread, ketchup, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles.) The hand dipped onion rings are very easily the best in Portland. The fries are cut at the diner as are most of the veggies, I should know, I used to work there. The location is sort of out of the way for most, but if you ever find yourself in the area, stop in. You'll be glad you did!
Pros: fresh ingridients
Cons: not open on Sundays
