Best

This is the place where you can find juicy and delicious barbecue's in Raleigh. I already miss their bbq can't wait for my next visit in Raleigh.

Worst

I see lots of high ratings and comments about ""real-BBQ"" and ""top-ten"" in NC and I'm telling you, it just can't be. I always love the ""shacky"" vibe but the food still quite ...

Editorial review from GrubHub 1/26/2014

Not worth a single penny. The sides all taste like they came from a can and heated up in the microwave. Don't waste your money. more

Tasty food, fair prices. The menu 5/27/2012

Tasty food, fair prices. The menu isn't extensive but they do everything on it right. The owners give heavily to charitable causes, so that's a plus in my book, too. I only know the Raleigh location and you might want to carry out instead of eat in because the place is really small. more

Nice, friendly and good ole food 11/30/2011

I have to say the experience my family and I have had there was extremely good. The food was freshly cooked and the baked macaroni was very tasty. The fried chicken was that good as my mother's. I like that it's servicing is done is a very friendly manner. My young child is able to color and be occupied while the food isn't yet served. BBQ is awesome (Pork) The BBQ sauce is really good. The food is enough on the plate to take leftovers home. It s a constant check to see if there is anything else we need. The customer service is so good, you can tell that it's pride in catering to others that need to have a great experience but also good food to eat. Over all I will and have recommended this small but cute restaurant to friends and co-workers. Con: Air Conditioner is very much needed during the hot summer days. . more

I can find better Barbecue in New York 7/22/2011

I have to say, I have been extremely disappointed in my barbecue experience in Raliegh, supposedly one of the capitals of american barbecue. My visit to Ole Time has only added to this dilemma. When we pulled up I thought ""Finally a real barbecue joint."" It had the look and feel of an original. Although on a day when it was 100 degrees outside, it was the same inside. No air conditioning. So what! we stayed anyway thinking it will add to a true Carolina Barbecue experience. Unfortunately the food did not live up the look. We ordered the ribs, no smoke flavor what so ever, seemed boiled first and where's the smoke ring? Fried Chicken, extremely soggy and greasy, inedible. Chopped Pork, good flavor mostly due to the excellent barcecue sauce, once again missing the elusive smokey flavor. The sides went from exceptional, collard greens & mac&cheese to horrible mashed potato, they had to come out of a box & mushy green beens. I found the service fun, if not fast. Then again I am from NYC. It is a shame, it seems if they put just a little more time into the smoking of their meats it can be a wonderful place. The barbecue sauce was good. more

Best BBQ in Raleigh Area 7/12/2011

BBQ restaurants aren't always about ""best customer service"", they are about great BBQ and southern charm. This somewhat hole in the wall restaurant has great BBQ and some of the best bbq sauce to go around. I prefer the spicy sauce the best and I always leave with a bottle for the house. Try it and it will become one of your favorite spots in Raleigh. I see a few negative comments on here, but very few, for a restaurant, thats not bad at all. more

Avoid!!! 6/4/2011

Had the most terrible experience at this place, the food, was warmed over, to the down right offensive service. How so many have had enjoyable occasion is besides me...I know I'm not the first to be verbally assaulted by management after inquiring with others. Why would one bother. more

Great Food,Wonderful Service and Friendly employees 4/6/2010

I eat at the location in Garner today for the first time for lunch and it was wonderful. Such very nice folks that work there. The food was very very good and not expensive at all. Mr. Jerry the owner come by to speak and see how things were going, such a nice gentleman. Some of the best barbecue Ive ever put in my mouth and the best hushpuppies Ive eaten anywhere! Pros: Great Family Atmosphere and Food more

Great food and service reasonably priced 11/22/2009

Our family of four visited Ole Time in Garner saturday night about 7pm. we walked into 70 girl soccer players and parents. My wife said ""we need to go somewhere else tonight, they are too crowded"" as soon as she said that the owner Jerry Hart came over to us and said ""no problem I'll get you served quickly"" and he did. We have NEVER been anywhere that the service and food was to compair to this. Haley one of Jerry's wait staff came over got our beverage orders and brought a basket of hot melt in your mouth hushpuppies and a giant box of crayons and paper for the kids. We were pleased they have a very inexpense kids menu like $3.95 drink included. Now for the fun part our food arrived in less than 10 min. hot fresh and I could swear my mom was in the kitchen. during our meal Jerry and Haley came to check on us, I haven't seen my kids eat so much in a while. Now is the hard part, Jerry came over with a tray of about 6 homemade desserts. I can't tell you about the desserts we were full of bbq, fried chicken, green beans and the best apple sticks I have ever had. I'll tell you if you don't give them a try you are just plan foolish. Good luck and we will see you soon. Pros: great food and service and 100% health grade Cons: not opened on sundays more

Great Pig,Great Sauce,Staff Like Family,Atmosphere Like Home 11/21/2009

Ole Time BBQ knows how to flavor a pig, by not masking the taste with heavy sauces. Simply put, pork tastes good and only needs the right tender care to bring out the best flavor. These guys know how to bring out the flavor by slow cooking, light seasoning and and providing a unique dining experience every time you visit. The hot sauce is a family recipe that is like no other I've ever tasted and brings the right amount of heat, which is great cause then you get to chug the delicious sweet tea right after those heaping bites of goodness. Pros: Best Hot Sauce I've ever Had...period Cons: Jerry the owner, will make you laugh till you cry more

Why should I look anywhere else? 11/19/2009

Our family has many good restaurants to choose from in the Triangle area. Finding a place to eat that has good homestyle cooked meals are few and far between. OTB has been a place for us to relax while enjoying the food and company. Some of our favorite meals have been the chicken pastry, hamburgers, meatloaf, BBQ chicken and of course BBQ pork. Our youngest son loves the plate sized pancakes and sausage! The service is consistently quick and friendly. Jerry always has a joke or two to make you laugh! So stop by, order up, relax and enjoy some good ole BBQ. Pros: fast service, good food, and happy people Cons: ""...and He rested on the seventh day..."" Genesis 2:2 more

What Has Happened With This Place? 10/17/2009

What has happened to this place?? After reading the rave reviews, we ventured the 34 mile drive looking forward to a great quaint BBQ joint at the Hillsborough Road spot. We tried to get there early fearing a Sat. evening big crowd at supper and when we arrived at 4:30 we knew we had beat the crowds. Since we were the only ones seated, service was immediate with a snack basket of hush puppies to munch on while the food was being prepared. Opps, did I say munch? The hush puppies were clearly ones left over from an earlier batch that were nuked for 10-15 seconds and brought out to us. They were barely warm, tough, and chewy....not hot, crisp and steamy when you bite into them. Great BBQ joints always serve up crisp, hot, melt in your mouth hush puppies but these were horrible. About two minutes later the food came out. While the portions are generous, the Que as well was barely warm. No sound from the kitchen at all of any Que being chopped fresh at anytime. Luke warm Que tends to be greasy and lump together since the fats aren't hot enuff to be solvent to make the meat flavorful and moist. My wife and I just looked at each other feeling sorry for this place and the potential that it is missing. It is a small typical old timey Que joint that if some attention to serving up hot fresh food were given could be the place of my dreams. My wife thought the BBQ beans to be very good and I liked the slaw and the iced tea was great. But in the world of memorable Que, luke warm chewy hush puppies and lumpy luke warm BBQ is an insult to anyone making the effort to make a special trip to this place. Don't waste your time. Maybe though try lunch when they are busy and fix fresh hush puppies and chop fresh Que for the crowd....if they have crowds. So sad, it really is. Pros: Very Fast Service, Great Iced Tea Cons: Food Mildly Warm, No One Asked If It Was OK more

Good Food & Friends 7/31/2009

This is good stuff!! Try the BBQ or ribs ... and the hush puppies are very light. I've had breakfast (great value), lunch (great taste), and dinner (friendly atmosphere) ... any time of day it's good home cooked food. Pros: BBQ & made to feel like one of the family Cons: seating capacity more

Is it going downhill 6/16/2009

Went their for a 5:00 dinner last Thursday. BBQ sandwich was cooler than room temp. Fries were cool to the touch. Had to have been sitting out for over an hour to get that cold. Not busy at all, employees just didn't care apparently. I heard it wasn't as good as it used to be. I hope my experience was an exception. Don't want to lose a local place like this. Pros: Hole in the Wall Cons: Cold Food more

Great Carolina Barbecue 8/19/2008

My wife and I went to Ole Time this past Saturday night for some authentic Carolina barbecue and man did we leave happy (and full)! We don't get down south often enough and wanted to be sure to find authentic Carolina barbecue on this trip. We read about Ole TIme but none of the reviews did this place justice. From the minute you walk in you know you're in for some good barbecue. The waitress was real nice and helped my wife order but I knew exactly what I wanted....ribs! Neither one of us was disappointed! From the hush puppies they put on the table when you arrive to the perfecty barbecued ribs and amazing sweet potato sticks everything was excellent. Don't forget the barbecue sauce! We even picked up a few of the ""Red Neck Chopsticks"" on our way out. The place was great, the food was outstanding and the staff is friendly and always willing to tell a story or two about the place. If you want authentic Carolina barbecue don't walk.....RUN......to Ole Time! Pros: Food, Ambience and Friendly Service Cons: Was too full to eat anymore more

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED 8/6/2008

After reading the reviews on citysearch, my friend and I thought we were in store for some awesome barbecue!! When we got there and looked at the place, it had that ""hole in the wall"" barbecue restaurant feel that only the best barbecue restaurants have. I started to salivate, and I thought for sure we were in for a comfort food extravaganza! The waitress that served us acted as if she didn't even want us there. As if we had walked into a party that we weren't invited to. Then I asked her which entree had the most barbecue and she told me she couldn't tell me. I went with the barbecue plate, and she never even told me that it comes in a large or a small!!! I was starving, and she brought me the small barbecue plate. So the service was horrible... however... I thought... well.... at least, maybe, the food will be good... right? wrong! The barbecue was dry! And the pork had hard edges, and it looked and tasted like it had came from meat that either wasn't that fresh, or wasn't from a good pig... if that makes any sense. It just wasn't that great. And the portion size was pathetic! Also, the sweet tea was watered down. A good glass of sweet tea is essential to barbecue, or any southern food. I don't like to write bad reviews for any business, because I know how hard it is to run a good business... but.... the prices were so high, and the service was so crappy... that I feel cheated. Pros: the inside of the restaurant is decorated really cool Cons: The waitress that works there wears a ""dirty d*cks"" shirt... why doesn't she wear an ole time barbecue shirt? more

The BOMB! 7/11/2008

Ole Time is such a ROCKIN place!!!! I Love the fresh Veggie Plates and Hushpuppies - yum, yum! They are friendly people and I would recommend them to anyone :) Pros: Has Vegetarian Options more

Best Brisket & Smoked Chicken in Raleigh area 2/10/2008

I've lived in Raleigh area for several years now and love brisket when it is cooked right. Most of the BBQ restaurants in the area do not offer it or they overcook it. At Hawgwild, it is so tender and juicy that it melts in your mouth. The only problem I have is that I can't make myself stop eating it! I have eaten at Hawgwild over ten times since they've opened and, obviously, love their brisket, but I have yet to find anything on the menu that I don't like. Also, if you are a smoked chicken fan their's is the best I've had, period. Pros: Best BBQ, Service, Cool atmosphere Cons: So good that you may over eat more

Best barbecue, mashed potatoes, banana pudding....EXCELLENT customer service 10/3/2007

There is something special about this place. It just plain gives you the sense that life is good. The people are so friendly and welcoming, it's like visiting family. They go out of their way to please everybody, which is not hard when every menu item is indescribably delicious. If you have been there before, you are probably there now. If you have not been there before, finish reading this and go now. Trust me, y'all be back. Pros: Great food and service more

Best NC BBQ Period 9/14/2007

I live in western NC where the BBQ sauce is tomato based. I like it but I will always go out of my way to stop and enjoy Ole Time BBQ when I am in Raleigh area. It is the best pork BBQ I have ever eaten. It is not a large place so stop by when crowds are less but Its worth the wait otherwise. Pros: Best BBQ in state Cons: small restaurant more

OWNER GOOD GUY 8/29/2007

I HAVE KNOWN THE OWNER JERRY HART FOR YEARS. HE IS A VERY CARING AND LOVING PERSON. WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY JERRY IS FIRST IN LINE. YES ONE OF HIS TRADITIONS IS JOKINGLY THROWING PEOPLE OUT THAT TIE UP A TABLE TOO LONG, BUT I THINK IT IS GREAT ESPECIALLY IF I AM THE ONE WAITING FOR THE TABLE. OLE TIME IS A LITE AND FUN ATMOSPHERE AND THE BEST FOOD AROUND! Pros: GOOD FOOD AND FUN Cons: PARKING A LITTLE TIGHT more
