Nice place to entertain guests 11/20/2008

The food and wine list was very good. The dover sole was outstanding! Ask for the roe to be served with the fish. My only complaint is, once you have paid the check, the wait staff ignores you. Pros: Food, Ambience Cons: Wait staff more

service so poor i signed up for a citysearch membership specifically to recount my experience 11/20/2007

these comments apply to the bar upstairs. i forwarded the below statement to the management:\r ***\r \r ""I just want to report that my friends and I experienced the worst service at your restaurant today. We waited 40 minutes for nachos, after which the waitress still came empty-handed (apparently forgetting our order). When we called the manager, stocky guy with dirty blond hair, (after 50 minutes of waiting...for NACHOS) over to ask what the holdup was, we received absolutely no apologies, no explanation. Instead he handed us a check that included charges for food that never came! Call it what you want, but what we experienced was the absolute opposite of customer service and even subpar restaurant/bar experience. I really hope that something is done to shape up your manager and your waitress. ""\r \r ***\r To add to the above comments, I just want to say that the experience involved even more frustrations (phantom charges on the bill, mixed up drinks, blatant negligence as our waitress was happy to serve people in business suits at the next table over) I never had an experience so bad that I absolutely refused to tip. I'm always the one prodding people to tip--even if the service were below average. But not today. Pros: the service always tended to be slow...and the food is alright...however SEE CONS! Cons: shoddy service and unapologetic manager who didn't seem to know how to bill properly more

Outstanding service, great food 4/24/2007

Nick's Fishmarket is a great restaurant. The service was outstanding. Water was always refilled, waiters were very very friendly. I have to agree that the food was great but it is definitely too expensive for the quality. I think the excellent service made up for it though. I was very satisfied and will definitely come back if I have more money. Pros: excellent service, romantic setting Cons: can be very expensive more

Best seafood in town 11/14/2006

Although the menu and prices qualify as upscale, Nick's makes you feel nothing but comfortable from the moment you walk in the door. The service is genuine and thorough. The menu items although perfectly prepared, are approachable. The sea bass is amazing. Try their famous Nick's salad! The ambiance is geared towards business meals but is comfortable and very conversation friendly. Pros: Great food and service Cons: Can be a bit dead at night because located in the financial district more

I loved it 4/5/2006

Sorry I waited so long to try out this very pricey seafood spot but needless to say I loved it. The appetizers, the soup, the salad, the main course and desert was all very good. No problems with the service. My favorite part was the fact that I didn't feel rushed through the meal. There was plenty of time to digest everything including drinks. The atomsphere is romantic and at night there is a fountain that lights up! Pros: atomsphere, great food, service Cons: expensive, very more

$$$$ - Not Worth It!! 1/6/2006

Visited on New Year's eve early in the evening. We were asked if we had reservations, which we didn't. We were offered to be seated but would have to order items separately off the menu. We agreed, but what a mistake! I ordered Parmesean Crusted sea bass which was sub par. My friend ordered Lobster/Chicken salad which he said was satifying but not worth the money. Service was sub-standard. The only thing good possibly is the ambience. Over priced and overrated! We surely chose the wrong restaurant! Pros: ambience Cons: Expensive more

Best service I've had. 12/20/2003

I would never have gone to Nicks if I hadnt received a $100 gift certificate at our employee Christmas party. Im not a fish fan at all because you cant really walk into just any restaurant in Chicago and get good, fresh fish. Fresh fish isnt supposed to have a very fishy smell to it, and entering Nicks, and with all the seafood served at Nicks, there is no fishy smell at all. The best part about Nicks was the service. The service was AWESOME. We were never without drinks, we always had fresh bread and butter, and they even pick up your napkin and fold it for you when you go to the washroom! Besides that, they were super friendly and made you laugh and feel at ease while still maintaining the upscale atmosphere that you would expect when your bill is over one hundred dollars. Pros: Staff., Awesome salads., Great desserts. Cons: Only seafood soup more

Wonderful 12/5/2003

Finally made it to Nick's the last time I was in town. It was wonderful. Great service, atmosphere and food. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the seafood options. I had the scallops special and it was one of the best meals I've had. The prices are fair considering the quality of the experience. I'll be back the next time I'm in the Big Windy. Pros: Seafood, Service, Atmosphere more

Outstanding Salmon 4/17/2003

I work in the restaurant industry and have to admit, this is the place to get great seafood. Reservations were easy to make and sitting in the lower level, its easy to escape the hustle and bustle of the city just above. We started out with the lobster bisque with a dill roll floating like an island of the dish, and the pairing was absolutely delicious. Then it was on to the main course of salmon. I selected the Asian salmon, which was a bit crispy accompanied by a vegetable stir-fry. My friend had salmon in champagne sauce and by the end of our dinner, he declared the fish to be the best salmon hes ever had. I have to agree, the flavors were perfect. Although the wine selection by the glass seemed to be lack-luster, the service was quite attentive. more

Better than we expected! 1/18/2003

I took my significant other out for a birthday dinner tonight and we were presently surprised. A lot of my friends have been to Nicks and all have had positive things to say. The service was courteous but not smothering and the food was good and flavorful. Nice size portions for the price of the entree. I asked our server to put a candle in my boyfriends dessert because it was a special occasion. Out comes his dessert with Happy Birthday written in chocolate on the plate and a balloon. He was really surprised. We will definitely make a return visit! Pros: Food, Great Service Cons: Price more

OVERRATED 9/18/2002

Who wants to spend an obscene amount of money on a slim, uncreative and dull selection of seafood while eating in a main dining room that's decorated like a tacky Miami nightclub? Fishmarket?! I'd rather go to an actual fishmarket than this pretentious joint. Pros: Service Cons: Menu, Price, Atmosphere more

fabulous 8/28/2002

my husband and i got married and had our reception here 7 years ago and everything was perfect. what a great place. they have a formal dining room for those that need that sort of thing. also a less formal ""cave"" with a beautiful bar. very romantic. more

Two thumbs up from me! 8/13/2002

Fantastic food and service. Offering fresh seafood and mouthwatering steaks. We went with a group of friends and the staff went out of their way to meet our needs. Two thumbs up from me! Pros: Service, Great Food Cons: No Parking, Crowded more

Great Food 7/17/2002

Nick's was a wonderful dining experience. The food was fresh, lite and delicious. The ambience was very romantic at dinner. I would definitely return, especially for special occasion. more

MORE THAN JUST A SEA FOOD RESTAURANT 6/22/2002

I've dined all over Chicago for the past 20 years. This is beyond a doubt the best fine dining establishment in the city. From the front door people, to the back of the house, these people all have one common goal---making your dining experience as pleasurable as it can be. At Nick's they treat you more like a member of the family than a customer. Every effort is made to fullfill any request. Heck, everytime I dine there, they fill a champagne bucket with ice and drop off several Amstel Lights at the table!! In other words, this is a fun fine dining restaurant, not a stuffy one!!!! The food, the service and the ambience is great!! And remember , this is not just another seafood restaurant. The steaks and chops are excellent, also. Try the New Yorker. This one beats any steak joint in town!! more
