Poor Customer Treatment 4/5/2014

I visited the Knoxville location on April 3rd 2014 around 7:00pm to sell them a Sony home theater receiver. They quoted me a price on the item. However, I had misplaced my ID and I was told by the employee to bring the item back and they would honor the quote once I found my misplaced ID. I placed the receiver back in my car and returned home where I found the misplaced ID. I returned to MKay's on Saturday April the 5th around 5:30pm and brought some books and the receiver which was still in my car never having been moved from two nights ago, back to sell. After I waited for nearly an hour and 15 minutes I was told that they would not take the receiver. So I explained to the employee that I was just in two days earlier and they had quoted me a price and was told to bring it back when I found my ID. So I ask the employee to find out why they rejected the receiver. I was then told it was in too poor shape. I said wait a minute it was in good enough shape two days ago the condition hasn't changed because its been in the front seat of my car untouched for two days. So I asked to speak to the manager. The employee goes to the guy a white blacked haired black bearded man with black glasses and begins to bring him to the counter. On the way to the counter I said to myself this is "bull". The "so called manager" who refused to give a name asked me to leave the store first without offering to give me my money or trade for the books I took in. So I told him I am getting my trade credit for the books first and had he never heard of the expression the customer is always right? I was disrespected insulted and thrown out of the store by this man because he was on a power trip. Littlle did he know I had spent nearly $1,000.00 in blu-rays and other items with in the last three weeks as I was upgrading my home entertainment system at my house.I also probably annually spend easly another $500-$800 annually at that store. I think this employee the so called "manager" believes they do so much business that insulting one customer more

Not that great 12/10/2009

Strange pricing--go in for a philosophy, religion, or mythology book, look to pay bug $$$. MUCH cheaper to get it on Amazon. For some reason, these books are all SO expensive there. There are some cheap genres--novels, for one. But quite a lot of the books in here are simply too pricey. And they don't give much anymore for your books, so expect a low-end trade. Like others have said, the atmosphere is just horrible: Kids fly around the store screaming and running into you; the music generally sucks and the salespeople are the GLOOMIEST bunch I have ever seen. I give it this--the selection's pretty good, but that's really about it. Prices and other things mention really drop the experience down. more

So-So 8/13/2009

The thing this place has going for it is selection. Tons and tons of used books/cds/dvds. I have very very rarely not found everything I was looking for unless the item was rare. Price wise, I don't know. A lot of their stuff is pretty pricy, especially considering that some of it isn't the best condition for what you're paying. But at the same time, they have tons of really good deals. You can usually find something rare here for a ridiculously low price if they dont know what they have. Their bargin cd and dvd section is awesome. This place is also often an absolute zoo. Parents let their children run around screaming and acting up. Not exactly the bookstore atmostphere. Also, as others have mentioned, they have one of the worst, unfriendliest I have ever encountered. No, seriously. It's rare that you even receive a smile or a hello at the checkout, and if you don't know where to look for what you need, you're screwed as the staff won't help you at all. Basically, this place is you get what you pay for. more

THE place for used books! 4/16/2006

This is the best used book store ever! There's a good selection of books for everyone. The children's section is also huge! Plan to spend a lot of time browsing when you go. Everything is well-organized, but there's a lot to look through. I love to trade in my old books for credit and pick out different ones. They also have CD's, DVD's, and college textbooks. more

I love McKay's 3/31/2006

I loved the 'old' McKays but I find the new one very pricey. I realize they have to pay for their new location, but I actually left there for the first time with only a handful of books. They DO have a fantastic and huge collection and the new location is very nice. Nice atmosphere. I will have to admit that the last time we went in there were playing some kind of techno music that was so annoying and loud that more than one customer complained. I think I liked the old McKays' better. As always, they are nice enough to have a freebie section out front, which is very generous. more

McKay's 12/13/2005

I really enjoy going to McKay's. They have a huge selection of books and DVD's and their prices can't be beat. I don't like their new location very much but at least it's much easier to find parking now. They give you hardly anything for your trade in's but the prices of their stuff is so cheap it evens out. It can get kind of messy sometimes and people tend to lay down in the aisles so you have to step over them, but overall I think it's a great place. more

Lots of Books 12/4/2005

If your one of those people that can spend hours in a bookshop just browsing, then this is the store for you. It has so many books that you can't leave the store with just the one that you came to find. However, this shop doesn't have the cozy atmosphere to sit down and read a bit before buying. Also the service is alright. The person didn't know where the book i wanted was located so i had to look for it myself. more

Come in and brouse! 12/2/2005

My son and I love going to McKay's. It has now moved into a large facility off Papermill Drive and is well laid out. We take our old books we're through with and come back out with more to read. They now have expanded their music area to an upstairs balcony, and there are lots of bargains to be found. The only drawback is I usually spend more than I get for trading in!! more

A fun place to spend an afternoon 11/22/2005

I can go into McKay's and spend an entire afternoon just browsing around. The variety is amazing. You can find books, CDs, DVDs, videos, you name it. I love that most of the items are priced very low and so much more afforadable than "brand new" items. I also like that I can "recycle" my books there. When I take items to sell, I love trading them because you get more when you take a credit and you feel like you are turning old books into new ones. I agree that the staff has never seemed overly helpful. They always seem busy and never seem to take the time to stop and help. But I still enjoy shopping there. more

Awesome Book Store 9/12/2005

Thier new "home" is absolutely fantastic. No more having to squeeze down the isles to get where you need to go. Wide range of selections and most of the books are in good-to-excellent quality. more

Book Lovers' Paradise 8/29/2005

If you love books, you will be in paradise at McKay's. Their new location is essentially a warehouse with aisles and aisles of books. There is an excellent children's book section and there is usually a good selection of cd's to choose from. Don't go to McKay's if you're in a rush - you'll need lots of time to look around. more

Greatest Book Store 8/27/2005

I love this bookstore. The prices are the best. You can also sell books you no longer want. I always get trade credit for my books. You get a little more that way and you can use the credit to buy more books. They have an excellent selection of book, games, movies, and music. more

Great selection - bad staff 8/25/2005

When I was back in Knoxville I used to go to this place a lot. The store has tons of used books in every category possible. You can trade in your old books for new ones. The prices are affordable and cheap. If you're a college student, the textbooks are extremely cheap. Most of them are under $10. A very great deal. Don't expect the staff to be helpful,. though , because they all think they are smarter than you and won't help you find anything. The books are worth the trip but just ignore the people who work there. McKays Used Books and CD's 8/19/2005

McKay's is one of my favorite places to buy books. They have a huge selection of books, CD's, DVD's, and games. They also have where you can trade in your old items for cash or trade. They don't give you much in the way of trade but since their prices are so low, it doesn't really matter. more

Books, Books, Books Everywhere! 8/18/2005

McKay's is a great place to go and spend the entire afternoon. They have several books on any topic that you can think of. The only problem is that they do not have an inventory system so they don't even know what they have. That can be kinda annoying if you are looking for a specific book and don't want to spend all afternoon looking to only discover they don't have it. It is a great place to get children's books also. My son is hard on books and I can't bring myself to buy them at retail price. more

Great Place to Browse 8/16/2005

McKay Used Books has been in Knoxville for a long time - and they have grown a lot too. Buy or Sell used books, cd's or video games. They have now moved into a huge location off off Papermill. It is still a great place to browse and hang out - you never know what you'll find. I've had good luck selling items there, but I always end up spending more when I find a great bargain. more

Got books 8/16/2005

Books are sooooo expensive now a days starting at about $20 a simple novel. If you are fed up with paying high prices and dont mind a used book, than McKay Used Books & Cd's is the place for you. It has a huge selection of books, cd's, and dvd's. more

Thousands of Titles 8/16/2005

McKays is your one stop shop for Used Books and Cd's. They have thousands of books and cd's from every possible genere. They even buy your books and give you cash or instore credit. The orginization can be fairly un-orginized but you will save a ton of money buying used. The cd's condition is on the price sticker so you know whether it is going to be scratched badly or not. All in all a great place to go to get Books and Cd's. more

Awesome Book, Movie, and CD Store 8/5/2005

McKays offers a huge selection of used books, videos (VHS and DVD) and CDs at good prices. They have numerous genres and carry things from years past and current years and everything in between. McKays purchases used items from people for either cash (for qualifying items) or trade credit to be used on other items in their store. We go their often and never leave disappointed. Check them out; you'll be glad you did! more

Nice store for the treasure hunter 7/8/2005

McKay Used Books and Cd's is really a hidden treasure in Knoxville Tennessee. I love this store. You can find great books and cds for really low prices. The only bad thing is it is unorganized which can really be a problem. When you find something, its all worth the effort. Recommended a ton! more
