Great Sushi 4/22/2006

This little place in Wrigleyville has excellent sushi. It's fresh, prepared well, and served with a smile. The staff was so polite and kind, a nice change from a lot of other sushi joints I have gone to recently. They also have mochi ice cream, which for me, makes or breaks a sushi place. The prices weren't bad either. I would recommend it. more

Traditional Japanese 9/6/2005

Whenever I want a traditional Japanese meal, I go to Matsuya in Wrigleyville. The decor of the restaurant is very traditional. The food is very good. They offer a large sushi menu as well as full entrees. The food is always very fresh and their fish specials are very tasty. The combination boxes are a good value. When it is crowded the service can be slow but the servers are friendly. Parking in the neighborhood can be difficult but it is close to public transportation. more

Great food even if you don't want sushi 8/9/2005

I recommend this place to everybody that wants sushi or not. You will not go wrong with anything your order off the menu. The cuts of fish is fresh and great. Whenever I come here I have order a little bit of everything. If you are looking for something not sushi I would order the Wafu steak. I love the vinegar sauce you dip it in. otherwise the combinations are great too. A variety of hot food and sushi. The service is good here too and fast to bring out your food. more

The other Cheap Japanese Eat in Belmont 8/6/2005

Together with Shiroi Hana, which is just down the road on Clark, Matsuya is the other cheap Japanese restaurant in the Wrigleyville area. Matsuya differs from Shiroi Hana mainly in ambience; Matsuya has a much more traditional Japanese restaurant look, with wooden booths and subdued lighting. It is not, I think, a romantic spot, but it can be cosy. The main reason for coming to Matsuya is their combination meals. These come in at around $10 and are really good value, including miso soup, entree, and dessert. more

Editorial
  • In Short
On a busy stretch of Clark Street, this clean, unpretentious sushi restaurant draws a regular crowd of maki-craving locals. The menu features traditional sushi and sashimi along with tempura and chicken and beef teriyaki and tempura, but rolls are the real favorites here. Specialty maki include the Philadelphia, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado and chopped onion, and the Windy City roll, with cooked tuna, mayonnaise, avocado and cucumber.
