Hyde Park Bar & Grill

Well this is a first. I went into pick up a to go order last night (10-22-11) at 11:30 pm like I have done numerous times over the years as I live in Hyde Park. Seated at the bar was a very drunk guy that looked at me the moment I walked in and said F k you. He proceeded to continue this behavior and even more intensely and very loudly. f k you, f k you. He then proceeded to threaten me physically as he was very drunk. It was a barrage of profanity and threats that cant be adequately described here (he was across the bar and screaming). As I waited for my to go order the manager of the restaurant came over to the guy and he was obviously friends with him because he called him by name ""Alex"" and he was saying ""Alex please be cool I'm begging you"" that's all the manager said over and over please be cool (I even looked over at the manager and gestured for him to do something but nothing). UNBELIEVABLE this was the manager of Hyde Park Bar and Grill on Duval and that's all he could say to a Drunk guy who was his friend and was screaming profanities and threats. I am a 52 year old guy who brings his wife and young kids there and this was the managers response!!?? This barrage did not stop until I walked out the door. I have been in business in Austin for 32 years and I am the former owner of Pinky's wireless and numerous other business and have never experienced something like this ever. This is not about the food but about the management (or complete lack of), and about the safety of guests of an establishment. (I can handle myself in all situations so I stayed and picked up my food as planned) In my opinion there is no management at this location and that radiates to all aspects of this business, from the food to the service and most importantly to your safety. After leaving I realized the drunk patron was someone I had kicked out of a building that I owned 8 years ago while this fact is important to ""me"" it does not change the managers non response . The managers response was inexcusable and while I have not contacted the ownership I intended to do so. If there is a response I will update this post but I suggest you think twice about this location. more

I love Hyde Park Bar & Grill ! I've had many dishes but my stand out favorite is the huge Spinach Salad. The spinach is always crisp, the other veggies are fresh and the dressing is perfect. And I can't keep my hands out the large plate of fries we always share. Consistently good food and service at reasonable prices ... an easy choice ! more

Gotta love Hyde Park Bar & Grill! It's such an Austin favorite. I love the fries... but who doesn't? YUM! I love that in addition to their comfort food like chicken fried steak and hamburgers, they also have a delicious grilled chicken breast with oh-so-good mushroom sauce on it that feels like a healthy alternative. The service is great as well! The last time I was there the man taking the names for the wait list was soooo nice and he even remembered mine and my date's name when we were leaving and thanked us for coming and asked us to come again... Believe me I will! more

I did not mention the discrepancy because I like to trust people and realized that I may have been mistaken. When I got home, I checked and I was indeed misled, cheated, stolen from or however you would like to put it. To top things all off, after I signed my check, the bartender asked me if I would total it up for him. I took that as a kind way of asking for a tip. I did not tip because I do not normally tip on take-out orders. Simply put, I was lied to and I will never again return to the Hyde Park Bar & Grill. more

If you're in Austin for more than a week, you pretty much need to stop by here just to say you did. Sample the fries for sure. When I'm super hungry I go for a burger and fries or a steak. In less ravenous times, the turkey burger with pesto is great, or the Asian chicken salad, or a plate of sides. I like the sweet potatoes and greens. It's a place where you can hear your companion unlike some spots where the music or the atmosphere is too loud. And your vegetarian friends have some decent options, too. more

This old house converted to a restaurant has the advantage of several small side rooms, so its not always as noisy as some places in town. Pros: the Fries - a half order will feed 4 people. Cons: environment is slightly run down. more

What's happened to this once wonderful place? Has it been haunted by a ghost chef who thinks his/her fried chicken actually has flavor (tasteless breading, tasteless chicken meat). Has serving a roast pork in a bowl swimming in gravy become vogue? Try disgusting. Do you really not seat a party of three in a nearly empty restaurant when one party is running late? Do you then try to seat the party at the crossroads of the kitchen and bar, and upon protest seat them in a nearly empty room NEXT to the only other party in the room. The management staff is always at the front door, ready to help in any way. The waitstaff is friendly and obviously enjoy working there, and the food is always exactly what you want . Actually, I would say that most of the servers had an irritable attitude. We felt this was strange, since we were not needy customers at all, only requested what we needed, like condiments and what not. No one smiled. This place just had an overall drab vibe to it. It wasn't the worst service of my life, but it was bad enough to make me never want to come here again, and I will also not recommend this to any of my friends, ever again. I'm sorry to say, we had a very dishonest, first-time dining experience. The wait was ok, the food was good, but the customer service was below average, and to top it off, watch your receipts! This was very unfortunate, especially during these times. Someone in the restaurant added $2 to the total bill; assuming this was done on the tip section. Grant it, we left over 20% even for the original tip and this still occurred! We have had this happen before so we keep an eye out and sure enough, it happened here. It is not the dollar amount, but the principle of the matter. How very unfortunate since we will not be attending this restaurant again and I will not recommend it. As for management? We'll see. I'll be visiting the establishment with my evidence and in my opinion, all staff who are hired and work there are direct representatives of their organization so maybe more effort should be taken when interviewing and hiring. more
