My first, and probably last, trip to Hugo's was a disappointment. We were there for friend's birthday with a decent sized party. Two of us ordered one of their specialty drinks and we were told they were out. Another friend ordered a beer and was told by our server they were out, but when he went to the bar they had it on tap. I ordered the corn soup, but they were out. I asked about the duck cigars and was told it was an appetizer that could be be an entree. So I ordered the duck cigars, which turned out to be one duck egg roll cut into three pieces. The sauce was the best part. A few people ordered the chicken enchillada, which one of my friends best described as ""deconstructed."" I tried it and wasn't too partial to it, but I guess I like my enchilladas rolled with more sauce. I ended up getting a roasted pineapple/chile tequila concoction for a drink that was pretty good. It's heavy on cilantro though, so if you don't like cilantro, avoid it. Service was good until after we had ordered all of our food. The drinks were refreshed for a while, but then we were left hanging for about 20 minutes after we'd finished and someone had to get up to find our server to ask for the check. Another 30 minutes later and we finally got our check. They do split checks, which is a nice plus. There was an extra specialty drink on the bill that no one had, so we had to do some back and forth with the server to get it removed. So to sum up: Drinks are great; Food is not worth it; Service could use a lot of improvement. more

Slowest service in town 2/2/2012

I went to Hugo's a couple of nights ago- there weren't more than 4 tables of people inside, but it took over 45 minutes to get our food from the time we placed our order. Our server came back and asked what we had because she couldn't remember- not once did a manager come by and apologize for the wait. There is no presence of management (or good management) here. There were dirty dishes sitting on our table and the surrounding bar throughout the meal. I will say the food and ambiance was great- but I believe the poor service will make me think twice before coming back. more

Menu looked good but service was AWFUL 1/20/2012

My sister and I got all dolled up to go to Hugo's and have a late dinner. The one positive about our experience was the free parking garage. We walked in to a slow restaurant and half full bar, so we decided to sit at the bar to have dinner. We waited, and waited for about 7 minutes (there were 2 bartenders standing directly across from us). Finally, I believe it was the service manager who walked up and took our drink order. When she brought us the beers we asked for a dinner menu which she happily provided, and walked away. We browsed the menu and decided on some appetizers. We closed our menus to signal we were ready to order and...nothing. About 25 min later we paid cash for our beers and walked out of Hugo's with not a word spoken us. RUDE. Never going back there again. more

Solid margaritas & budget-friendly happy hour 8/22/2011

Checked out Hugo's for the 2nd time since they opened. I'll be perfectly honest and say that the first time I went I was not impressed with the food. The drinks were good but unless they made some improvements I was not going back for dinner. Since then, it looks like they've updated their menu and for the better. I went for happy hour which is a great (low cost) way to sample some of their menu items. The quesadillas were solid, the pork empanadas were my favorite, and their margaritas can't be beat (loved the splash of OJ on top). The queso was a little thick for my taste but overall BIG improvements on the food. Definitely worth checking out! more

Great Service, Great Chef, Awesome Food! 8/19/2011

This was my first experience at Hugo's Restaurant Y Tequila Bar and it was a good one. My first impression was that the service was immaculately spectacular. My drink was never left empty, in fact I never had to ask for anything. The appetizers were marvelous but the real highlight of the evening came when I was ordering my entree. Being on a strict diet usually restricts a lot that a kitchen can do, at Hugo's the Chef himself left the kitchen to come and offer me suggestions and substitutions; I felt like a celebrity:) The custom made Red Fish Tacos on homemade corn tortillas were galactic. Thank you Hugo's for a fabulous Happy Hour from start to finish! 5 Stars. -Levi Morgan more

Pleasantly Surprised! 8/19/2011

I visited Hugo?s last night for the first time with some work friends and can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was! I?m always a little disappointed after trying out shiny, new Mexican Restaurants in Austin?s that focus more on their decor then on their food, but that was not the case with Hugo?s. Not only was the environment beautiful, but the food was delicious the service was friendly and everyone had a great time. We ordered a couple different appetizers, but I would have to say that my favorite was the chicken quesadilla. I also recommend that you try their house Margarita- another crowd pleaser. I can honestly say that Hugo?s has made my short list of delicious Mexican restaurants in Austin! more
