Favorite Sushi Place in Philadelphi 7/22/2010

Since moving to Phila from San Francisco, I have searched far and low (and spent a lot of money) in search of an authentic sushi restaurant in this city. Of the 8+ restaurants I've tried, I prefer Hikaru (the one off of South St.). The fish is fresh and the rolls are tasty. I like that the chefs do not put too much rice in their rolls so I really can taste what's inside. My only critique is that Hikaru should have more rolls or items ""on special."" I like to be adventurous. Pros: reasonable prices, fresh fish, yummy rolls more

Authentic 9/16/2008

I am not from Japan, but I am from a country which is deeply affected by Japanese culture. This place is the first sushi place that I feel like being back to Asia. (better than Minado) The dessert is good too. We got Japanese Garden. You should try it, it's pretty much Japanese Traditional Dessert. \r more

friendly and good sushi 7/31/2008

I've been here twice and the sushi has been fresh and good both times. They do give you quite a bit of food if you order the terriyaki dinners. Expect to pay an average of $20 or more per person. The service is always super friendly. They do have a little dog there sometimes but he is very friendly so not to worry. Pros: Decent food, fresh sushi, easy off-street parking weekdays Cons: the tofu tends to be a little overcooked but still good, can be a little slow sometimes more

Rock-N-(sushi)-Roll 9/6/2005

There are not too many quality sushi places in this part of town, this is one of them. The host was friendly however the waitress was shy and nowhere to be found on the quiet evening I went. This was unfortunate for the proprietor since I probably would have ordered more rolls. They have some interesting specialty ones, including one called Rock-N-Roll, which was super spicy tuna with cucumber and red pepper. Also pretty good was the California with king crab. Tuna, yellow tail and salmon were fresh. Usually I don't see squid sushi around and now I know why (very pasty and tough), but adventure sometimes has its price. The bill was reasonable however and I ate well. Pros: Menu Cons: Service more

i love this place 6/14/2004

My wife and I have been to Hikaru about 20 times in the last 10 years, and I love it more every time I go. The place is never stuffy, and as soon as you enter the smiles on the servers always can put you at ease. The food is outstanding, and the atmosphere just makes you want to become a regular. Pros: awesome food, great service more

Excellent!!!!! 3/18/2003

This was an excellent experience from start to finish! We started with some excellent tempura because we knew that all their sushi is hand rolled and takes a little while. When the sushi arrived it was beautifully presented and more importantly tasted wonderful! The best part was a sweet and informed waitress who recomended a great dessert. By far and away one of the best experiences in a long time. Pros: Reasonably priced, low key, uncrowded more

New decor/new prices 9/27/2002

I have always liked Hikaru and the new decor is nice, but not worth the added price. The sushi is some of the best in the city, but I would rather pay the old prices in the old place then the new prices in the new place. Pros: Sushi, Ambience Cons: Parking, Price more
