Nice bar but sometimes when I go in 5/23/2012

Nice bar but sometimes when I go in there I feel some weird energy. Its hard to explain. The fried mushrooms are great and a must try if you check this place out. more

We took another Chance! My wife and I 3/20/2012

We took another Chance! My wife and I went to the Handlebar a year ago, when it was the Downing Grill, for St. Pat's after being served hogwash in another bar, that was inedible. The corned beef special was fantastic! We've eaten there since, under the new ownership. A couple of months ago we had Fish Taco's there, with hardly any fish in them, so....We were a little concerned about coming back for St. Pat's. We took a chance, and it was outstanding. Two large, thick slabs of Corned Beef that was marinated, or brine d. It was the most delicious Corned Beef that I've ever had anywhere. The waitress who served us was very attentive and enthusiastic about her job. We'll come back! more

This is supposed to be a restaurant for cycling enthusiasts 7/27/2008

We've been going here off and on over the years, especially during July, when we would always be assured of watching the Tour de France while eating. We checked the schedule before we left home to make sure it was on, but when we got to the restaurant it wasn't on any of the televisions. We had to ask the waitress twice to change the channel, then they only changed it on one of the TVs. Apparently it was more important to watch a Cheers rerun and some NASCAR race. What happened to this place? The prices have gone up and the service is just plain bad. They got my order wrong. I also saw several other patrons having to ""manage"" the wait staff, going up to them to ask for the checks, etc. Our waitress preferred to sit at a table talking with her friends than doing her job. Also: a 12 oz Guinness is $4.50? What was once a charming restaurant for cycling enthusiasts is now nothing better than a below average, overpriced diner. The cycling theme is limited to the decor. We're never going back. more

Do they know what customer service is? 7/13/2008

I live down the street from Handle Bar and Grill and while I will admit the food is great, I dont think customer service is a part of the training. Its almost routine. I went in there about 3 months ago and we were seated promptly. The waitress took our orders rather quick but once she was done with that we didnt see her again until she dropped of the check seeing that our drinks were empty and had been for at least 15 minutes. Someone else brought out the food.We went in there today and it was almost a repeat of the last time. We were seated promptly and our orders were taken rather quick and again someone else brought out the food and our waitress showed up at the end to drop off the check without ever asking how the food was or if we wanted refills. Keep in mind it wasnt very busy at all. There were maybe 6 or 7 tables seated and they had at least 4 waitresses working. I notice that the parking lot doesnt get as full as it use to and with the way the customer service is I now understand why. Maybe instead of spending money putting a new spiffy sign on the corner they should instead use that money teaching the waitstaff how to be a little more service oriented. Afterall they are not entitled to a tip simply because they wait tables, they still have to earn it. Pros: Great food, original decor Cons: bad service, small parking lot more

Tasty Food, Service Needs Help 4/30/2008

This is my closest neighborhood restaurant, and one my husband and I enjoy walking to on a regular basis. The food is consistently good -- in fact, often very good. For a ""bar"", this place has an ambitious menu and executes it well. There is something for everyone here. Health nuts: try the southwest salad or Portabello mushroom burger. Regular Joes: check out the meatloaf or burgers and don't skip the onion rings. We even splurged for dessert last week and has a scrumptious, decadent bread pudding -- tasty! But, I have to agree with many of the other reviewers here that the service is not always up to par. I understand the casual vibe thing, and that is all fine and well to a point, but when my server is sitting at the bar chatting with the bartender while I am waiting for a drink refill, that's just poor service. Often, we have to flag someone down -- generally other than our server -- because our server doesn't stop by again after the food comes. We've come to accept this as ""just the way Handle Bar is"" because we still genuinely like the place and the food. But I'm not sure I'd be as forgiving if this was someplace other than right down the street. Pros: Very good food, way beyond most ""bar"" offerings Cons: Service can be too casual at times more

Great food in a relaxed atmosphere 1/24/2006

The Handlebar is a great deal in one of the most comfortable atmospheres around. The food is amazing and the serving size is quite large. I have never had a meal and still felt hungry after eating. After going there several times, I've found that the burgers are always a good pick, tasting as good as any burger I've had in Denver. The Nachos are a feast in themselves. They pile them high on a pizza pan loaded with everything for a reasonable price. I once stopped in for lunch on Saturday to find that they have a full brunch menu that they serve from 8am until 1pm. After the meal, I HIGHLY recommend the Hammer head hash concoction they serve. I was suprised to see comments about negative service. The servers are casual and easy to talk to while getting things done promptly. Overall, definitely a great restaurant find. Pros: Serving Size, Food Quality, Atmosphere Cons: Parking, Overpriced Sides, Kids Meal Prices more

Great Meatloaf 10/26/2005

Their buffalo meatloaf is amazing along with the mashed potatos, fries and fish n chips! more

""TIP"" = Service is KEY ! 1/9/2005

My husband and I were ignored by the waitress Jan 2 We went in for breakfast; were seated immediately by the manager; noone else in the place. We waited 5 minutes until a waitress appeared at the back. She looked at me, went back to kitchen. TAnother couple came in (seated themselves), waitress came out, saw them, waved, then went to other side of seating area and brought them water. She passed us and my husband said ""can we get some coffee please and an iced tea?"" his tone indicated we'd been waiting. She brought our drinks with the other couples, she 'slammed' my tea on the table, took their order, then went the back way to the kitchen. We left. We eat out at least 5 times a week, and will not be back nor recommend places where the service is lacking, and first seated, first served, is ignored. more

Cheap and Good 8/8/2002

The Handlebar Grill looks and feels like a sports bar but the food is better than any sports bar I've ever been too. I always start with the hot artichoke dip. The best in town!!! Very creamy and comes with breads and vegetables to dip. It's an appetizer but it's a meal in itself so share so you can enjoy there other fine fare. The salads are creative and healthy. The sandwiches range from the regular to a more healthy buffalo burger. It's hard to go wrong at this eats by Washington Park. Pros: food first rate, not smoky, service Cons: parking, little noisy more

Still the One 7/19/2002

The Kokapelli is still the best! Cooked to order and done just right. Always had a good meal here but the Kokapelli is the one for me. Good Onion Rings but not very many for the price. They'd get rich and I'd get fat if they delivered. more
