Terrible food unprofessional owner 9/26/2011

If I could give this place 0 out of 5 stars I would. I can only think that any 5 star reviews here must have some ownership interest in the restaurant or they lost their taste buds in some foreign war. My wife and I went in there with our 7 mo. old baby. I ordered fajitas, she ordered salmon enchiladas. My fajitas came out with no sour cream, no guacamole, no cheese, and no pico de gallo. The meat was really bland and seemed as if it wasn't really even grilled. I told the waitress that as long as I have lived in texas (about 17 years now) I have never seen fajitas that didn't come with at least some of the above ingredients on the side. She said she agreed but was only a waitress and that the owner was on hand if I wanted to talk to her. The owner said no place in town serves fajitas with the above ingredients for that price ($10) I named about 5 restaurants that did and she said sorry, that's my price. I told her that the fajitas were not good and she just grabbed the plate off the table and stormed off. I wasn't looking for a free meal. I rarely complain when I go out to eat. She could have offered me something else off the menu, she could have just given me the sour cream, guac, cheese and pico (to at least mask the poor tasting meat) which would have cost her much less than the $10 she lost by snatching my plate off the table and the untold money she might lose due to this review. My wife choked down her salmon enchiladas (only because she was hungry). They were really dry and overly fishy. Avoid this place like the plague! more

Best Mexican placed in town! 2/4/2011

Fun atmosphere, friendly staff, great food. I was worried when I read some of the reviews, but if you go to this restaurant you will see that it is a great place. more

ALMOST RUINED MY VISIT TO AUSTIN 5/9/2010

THE FOOD IS NOT EVEN AUTHENTIC TEX-MEX MUCH LESS MEXICAN. ORDERED A TORTA DE PUERCO TURNED OUT TO BE A PORK SLOPPY JOE SERVED WITH PICKLES OF ALL THINGS. THE SERVICE WAS TOO HORRID TO DETAIL AS THEY PAID ABSOLUTLEY NO ATTENTION TO US. EVERYONE STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRAP; A DISGRACE TO AUSTIN AND TEXAS FOR THAT MATTER. THE 1 STAR RATING IS ONLY THERE CAUSE CITYSEARCH WOULD NOT LET ME PUBLISH WITHOUT ONE. Pros: GOOD LOCATION Cons: SERVICE AND FOOD SUX more

Horrible service and food, skip this place 3/17/2010

When this restaurant was on South Congress I loved it, I would take people from out of town there and it was always a big hit. Recently I took a friend to the new location and was horribly embarrassed about making the recommendation. I ordered fajitas and they pretty clearly were microwaved chicken strips straight out of the freezer. Not a single grill mark or sign that they were even in a frying pan. When I told the waiter they were not fajitas he told me the kitchen was just trying to close down... What? If they are open they should be making quality food. Don't take anyone here unless you like embarassment. Pros: so bad it makes food carts look appetizing Cons: horrible food, poor quality more

Nasty and Snobbish Manager 3/10/2010

I had just gotten married and was heading from the reception to downtown to go dancing. I was still in my wedding dress and neither me nor my husband had been drinking. I started having terrible, painful stomach cramps because of all the rich food I had eaten at the reception and I desperately needed to use the bathroom. We were stuck in downtown traffic and the only place in front of us was El Sol y La Luna. There was a big sign on the door saying ""Bathrooms for paying customers only"", so I went in with my wallet and offered to buy something if they'd let me use their bathroom. The female manager behind the counter looked me up and down and curled her lip at my dress. She asked me why I needed a bathroom and I told her I was about to be sick and begged her to let me use the bathroom. She started yelling at me and refusing to let me use it, even though I was offering her cash. I was practically in tears as I was about to get sick all over my wedding dress. She finally realized that if she didn't let me go to the bathroom, I was going to get sick right there in front of all the other customers, so she allowed a hostess to show it to me. I just kept whimpering ""Thank you, thank you"" as I was led back. Meanwhile, the female manager was screaming at my husband and threatening to call the cops, saying it wasn't her problem that I was sick and that we had no business trying to use her bathroom. My husband kept offering her money, but she refused it and kept shouting until she realized he wasn't going to leave without me and stormed off. It was awful being so sick on my wedding night and then being refused a bathroom. That manager is one of the nastiest people I have ever met and I hope she ends up in the same situation some day so she can see what it feels like. Cons: Manager looks down on you if you're not Latino more

Bad food, terrible service, 0 out of 5 stars 2/27/2010

My family and I went to El Sol Y La Luna for a celebration and by the end of the night the only thing that saved the bad food and terrible service was the salsa music. 1st suggestion, stick to beer because their mixed drinks are awful. 2nd suggestion, eat somewhere else before you go to this restaurant because the food is NOT GOOD. 3rd suggestion, DO NOT expect to receive good customer service AT ALL because it is non-existent. I suppose the waitress knew we were a big party and her gratuity would be automatically added so she didn't feel the need to wait on us WHAT SO EVER! When it was time to serve the food, 1 person ended up without their meal and MORE THAN 1 persons' food ended up cold somehow. 4th and final suggestion, only go the this restaurant for the live salsa band. Pros: Music Cons: Mixed Drinks, Food & the Service more

difrent and nice 7/27/2009

my wife and i went to eat down town Austin, when we got to the place they had an hour wait we signed our neme on and went for a drink to el sol y la luna untill our table was ready. we sat at the bar; the bartender convinced us to try some to eat he suggested the margarita with patron for me and for my wife something with pineaple. over all we had a great experience i think is not expensive at all concidered is right in the middle of downtown there avarege price is 10 dollars the only problem is that they dont have a parking lot, but is a cool place to start when going out Pros: drinks, price, service. Cons: parking more

Over priced, over hyped 6/30/2009

Went for lunch because I had heard good things and had a gift certificate. First, it was freezing cold in the restaurant. Then you have to pay $3 for chips and salsa. The queso isn't much more than just melted velveeta with pico sprinkled on top. The food did come out pretty quick but my enchiladas were room temperature at best and my companion never received one of their sides. \r \r Bottom line: save your money and go some place better and cheaper like El Arroyo. Pros: Decor Cons: Food, price, parking, freezing more

Finally a Good Mexican Restaurant Downtown! 5/29/2009

I've been a fan of El Sol y La Luna when they were located on South Congress. Now that they've moved downtown to 6th St. I couldn't be happier! Finally there is a good place to get mexican food and margaritas before you go out on a Friday night! more

best service 8/18/2008

El sol y la luna has the best service. The price is average but the food is really good. I would go and visit again some day.\r Pros: service Cons: price more

I love this place 3/8/2008

Just down from that over priced dump, Guerros , is this hidden treasure. I eat one to 2 times a week here. It reminds me a Mexico City Cafe. I have never had anything bad here. I love the crispy beef taco plate. The guacamole is always really fresh. One day I was under the weather and got some of their soup, even that was killer!\r \r If you are looking for ambience, this isnt it, If you want great food from a hole in the wall for Tex -Mex. This is it! more

El Malo 2/3/2008

I have been to this restaurant a half dozen times, but that's it--I won't be going back. My coworker and I placed a phone to-go order for 4 veggie tacos. First, the server took the order and then left my friend hanging on the phone, apparently forgotten. After a few minutes of yelling into the receiver for help, the server returned and the order was started over. Then, we were told it would be $17+-- for 4 tacos. It turns out the prices don't match the online menu. They added a dollar per taco for about a teaspoon of guac on each. We argued the price until they adjusted it correctly, $5 less (each of our tacos ended up being about $5, expensive for veggie tacos, we think).\r \r When I picked up the food, the server took my money and gave me my change, minus the 7 cents. As I waited for the rest of my change, she looked at me like I should be leaving and asked if I wanted the rest of the change. I said yes. She had to get the manager. The manager came over and made a big scene about me wanting 7 cents back, yelling ""siete centavos! siete centavos!"", as she begrudgingly gave it to me. I am not one to be petty about 7 cents, but considering the experience from start to end, I wanted to 7 cents on principle alone.\r \r The service here is horrible, and the food is mediocre, and we will never go back.\r more

Best salmon tacos in town! 11/23/2007

I love this place. It is always consistently good and the service is great. Nilda is super sweet and we will go there just to see her. The smoked salmon tacos are excellent and I have to have them at least onece a week... more

over-priced, sub-par Mexican food 9/19/2007

The food was bland, and not very good at all. The prices are too high for the amount of food you get, and additionally you have to pay for the chips. Our waitress apparently did not understand English well, as she could not answer simple questions about the menu. She also never offered us any chips, and never came back to our table to check on us. For a first visit, this was a bad experience. We will not be returning to this restaurant.\r \r Lesson learned: if a Mexican food restaurant is empty at 7 PM on South Congress, turn around and walk back out the door. There is too much good Mexican food in Austin to settle. more

blase food - quick - friendly 7/1/2007

Not the tastiest food in town, but its ok. Blase mexican with all the typical stuff you see on everyone else's menu, except maybe a little less tasty. Friends staff, and a modest little restaurant with a big sign. Not a bad place to grab a quick bite, but wouldnt entertain here.\r Pros: friendly more

Good Value, Quality Food, Service Could be Better 1/31/2007

This is the place for good food, hot and quick. If your looking for an upscale Austin imitation-this isn't it.\r The wait staff is a bit ""reserved"", they could cheer up a bit.\r Good menu, no frills, and music that might be of interest. Pros: Good Food, Quick, Hot Cons: Staff is low key-but if thats what you like great. more
