This is my second attempt using this service and to say that I am disappointed is an understatment. I am a General Manager of a hotel and planned to recommend this service if they could deliver on the promise. So fat they have not. Have not even called the store cause I am sure they wil just say that they had no drivers. more

ordered twice and both times they didn't have a driver or weren't delivering yet their food may be good (I don't know yet) but their service is lousy more

What's not to like! 10/16/2011

This has been a favorite of mine since I moved to San Antone in 2002. I have taken friends here and grandchildren. It is always wonderful. The servers are always pleasant, courteous and efficient. Earl's has the very absolute best open-faced roast beef sandwich EVER. The coconut pie and coffee are always favorites. My grandson thinks the chocolate malts are the best too. Earl's has senior plates and daily specials and the cooking is excellent. What ever you choose will be a treat for your taste buds. more

No Reason to Return 1/31/2010

When we got there, the place was about 1/3rd full, yet we had to wait a long time to get seated. The line was 8 deep before they even looked our way. After we were seated it was more of the same. Very slow to take our orders, bring our food out, bring condiments (which we eventually had to get up and get ourselves in full view of the host, who didn't even flinch), and to bring our bill. The server apologized at the end, after he had slacked during the whole meal. When we were paying, the manager rang us out while on the phone the whole time, even after we said we had a complaint. When we finally were able to speak with him, he was completely lax in his reponse, no apology no nothing. It was as if he didn't care whether or not we come again... so we won't. Pros: Food tasted good Cons: Horrible Service more

I don't get it 11/9/2009

My first trip to Earl Abel's was shortly after I moved here, early this year. A friend and I went there for dinner, and both meals - while a bit expensive, comparatively speaking - were excellent: fresh, well-prepared and ample portions. Pros: Pretty good desserts and good service (generally) Cons: Inconsistent and expensive more

earl abel's reincarnated is true to it predecessor in every way...it even improves on the old formula. Pros: the absolute best chocolate cake on the planet. Cons: does anything else matter? more

Better to leave 6/1/2008

First time for my newly wed wife and I to acquaint ourselves with what we thought to be a very well rounded eatery. We just received our sets of wedding pictures and we wanted a nice place to look at them and enjoy a well cooked meal. We ordered Tea and Coke and the waitress addressed me as if I was a child and told me that I could only have one refill. Ok- I ordered an appetizer so that we could snack while we shared this time together looking at the pictures. We also ordered chicken dishes. Within minutes our entries arrived before our appetizers! I explained to the waitress that this order of service is back-wards and she explained to me as if I was a child that the cooks had already prepared a lot of chicken earlier and she didn't want our entrie to get cold. and that our appetizer would be out in about 15 minutes. more

Worst food and service ever for a well known restaurant 4/5/2008

I am sad to say, this is not you parents Earl Abels. It still has the originators name on the sign, but I would bet Earl would not be Abel to sleep if he knew to what depths of poor quality and service his restaurant has descended to. Six of us went for dinner. We ordered everything from a club sandwich to chicken fried steak, to grilled pork chops, to spaghetti and meatballs. We had wanted to order fried chicken, but were told they were out of chicken. That is akin to going to McDonalds, to be told they have no Big Macs. The first clue that this meal was going to go bad, was the salad dressing. It was as watery and thin as I have ever seen and flavorless. Then the food came. I guess it was food, I am not sure. The chicken-fried steak was over cooked and hard. The spaghetti had a strange smell. The person that ordered it said it smelled of Ben-Gay. (Personally I think she was smelling the waitress, who had to be seventy years old.) The club sandwich was no better. The bacon was old tasting, like it was cooked many hours before, and it left a greasy taste in you mouth. Now for the service! It was just as bad. It took fifteen minutes after we sat down, just to get our drinks. Now if they were busy, I could understand that. They weren't busy at all. We had to ask for crackers to go with the salads. We had to ask for dinner rolls which should come with the meals. We had to ask three times for a glass of juice, because the waitress kept forgetting about it. Then the fun began. The so-called excuse for a manager came by and asked if everything was OK. When we told him no, he just walked off. I guess he was just asking a rhetorical question. If you don;t want to hear the occasional negative feedback, then don't ask the question. What a waste of good money. I don't mind paying the better part of $100 for a meal, but this was not a good meal, either food wise or service wise. Pros: not to crowded Cons: Lousy food - terrible service - uncaring manager more

CLOSED 10/26/2006

Just to let everyone know Earl Abel's is now closed. Rumor has it someone is building condominiums. Sorry! more

Greedy Condo Developers Destroy a Classic 8/20/2006

It was one sad day when the greedy condo developers bulldozed this place. But, we can all look forward to a nice, new shiney tower full of arrogant egomanics who, quite sadly, haven't moved out of State. It is very bad mojo to bulldoze a classic!!! more

Twilight Zone 1/6/2005

This place is CREEPY, but that's part of its intrigue. I must admit that the fried chicken is really all-that, but other than that I haven't had anything worth bearing the geriatric atmosphere for. If you can appreciate places with personality, this landmark is worth checking out atleast once. As for me (now that I've been inside 2-3 times), I'm sticking with take-out. Pros: Fried Chicken, Nostalgia, Location more

Where did the other reviewers eat? 7/8/2004

I recently went to Earl Abel's for breakfast. I bypassed both IHOP and Denny's to go to the highly recommended Earl Abel's. I have never had such terrible food. The scrambled eggs were liquid-y and runny, the pancakes were just weird, and the service was indifferent. I used to think that it was pretty difficult to screw up breakfast, but Earl Abel's proved me wrong. Cons: , Service more

Superb 5/30/2004

Never had a bad meal. never had a marginal meal. Always excellent. Always more than I should eat. Dinner rolls to die for. The best service in town. If there is ANY problem with the food, service, etc it is taken care of immediately and courteously. Pros: Great food, Great Service more

Can I have the CHEWABLE MENU? 10/4/2002

This was undoubtably one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune of consuming. I ordered the "Baked Hen" special - it was an overdone dark meat quarter of a very tiny chicken, served over a bed of mush (later discovered to be stuffing) and served with mashed sweet potatoes that had a flavor reminiscent of the potpourri aisle at Wal-Mart. VILE! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! more

The best roast beef I've ever had! 8/13/2002

Okay -- it's true... Earl Abel's is generally an "over 50's" hangout. Yes, the waitresses always seem to be overworked and never have enough time for individual patrons. HOWEVER, the quality of the food is well worth the effort. Pros: excellent food, fun environment Cons: slow service, not a young crowd more

Earl is no pearl 8/10/2002

Time was when Earl Ablel's was THE place to go for chicken specials and fast waitresses. It even had a reputation for a certain U.S.Senator boxing exhibition, but that was then and this is now. Earl Abel has gone the way of Joske's and floride free water. Pros: landmark more

Over rated 7/26/2002

It has been awhile since my experience at Earl Able's but I don't plan to go back. The food is decent, but I think it's over-rated. You get much better service if you are a "regular" , "monied", or "elderly." I thought everyone's money paid for the same service. Informal & musty. Won't ever return willingly - too many other fine dining establishments in S.A. to waste my time here! Pros: good parking, central location Cons: service, atmosphere more

In a word, "Boring". 7/23/2002

Old-feeling, musty interior, run-of-the-mill food. Decent prices and decent service. Also heard a ghost in the ladies bathroom! The waitress, who had worked there for eons, corroborated that occasionally a guest will report hearing, seeing or feeling "something funny"! Pros: good parking Cons: musty atmosphere more

From the outside, it looks like a diner that was built in the 1990s, but was designed in the 1930s. But once inside, it's clear this is the real deal: dark wall panels and...
