Thanks for making our night! 3/16/2010

My girlfriend and I went out on the town for our recent engagement. Our waitress was super friendly and mentioned to the Chef (named Brit) that we were celebrating. He then came out to our table to congratulate us and offered to make us a special tasting menu. I couldnt have asked for a better meal. Everything was mouthwatering and the service was more then prompt (thanks Mellissa). Pros: food top notch and staff extremely considerate Cons: N/A more

Hooker Bar 2/9/2010

There is a broad named Amanda Scogna who hangs out there and may even have picked up a bartending shift. She IS a hooker, literally. 200 used to be her rate but I think it's dropped. more

People Problems 2/1/2010

Let me just say I admittedly have an agenda. That being said, the following is all quite true. The little c*@+sucker Brit in the kitchen is an obnoxious trouble maker. But once he gets in over his head and scared to death he calls police to protect him. First, before I knew anything about him, he decided to stick his nose in my relationship. He thought it was a fun little game to answer my girl's phone while they were out one night and immediately set about talking serious smack to me. He claimed to be her new boyfriend but he's gay so that wasn't the case. Nonetheless he thought it appropriate to create the sort of potentially very serious situation any idiot knows would result. He didn't stop there though. He proceeded to take his telephone tough guy act to another level with threats. He was coming to see me accompanied by fictitious heavies to do his bidding. He created a whole big shot fantasy persona.Oh yeah! He went the extra mile to antagonize me. Fast forward to earlier tonight when he was so panicked by the mess he got in that he called the cops. Then the silly s#@t provided me with the location thinking I'd get locked up. I went directly over there eager to speak to the police myself. I did and all was fine and the cop obviously saw through his BS. I later called and spoke to the owner to enlighten him as to the origins of the drama his employee had brought to his establishment. I made sure to be polite and forthright. He was exactly as others here have described him. His demeanor was pompous and condescending and he spent the whole call trying to talk over me. Do yourself a favor and don't give them your hard earned money. Pros: I know of one who hangs out there, ask for Mandy Cons: The personality disorders of the staff and owner more

A Warm Welcome! 3/2/2009

I've been out of town for a number of years and the first place I wanted to go was the Las Vegas Lounge to see Marcus, Mike, and Wayne. I was very disappointed to hear they were no longer employed by the LVL. But it is the restaurant business so give or take the length of anyone's employment. Luckily I found out that these gentleman are working at Coco's now, and the customers followed!. Even a few of the old gorgeous waitresses (and you're not old ladies, you're just familiar sweet faces!) are working there now. The menu at Coco's is exquisite, and I truly enjoy the ambiance. Mike best wishes with your restaurant, I know you will remain a success! Marcus it truly was a pleasure to sit at your bar again. VIsiting this place was the first time I felt home since I've been back in Philly. That is saying something, because it was the first time I ever paid a visit to this establishment! Pros: Owner, Staff, Food, Televisions, Atmosphere, Draft Selection, and Cleanliness Cons: I don't have enough time to pay this establishment a visit every day! more

Be aware while sitting at the bar 11/25/2008

I haven't been here for a few years, so the bartenders may be different. But two female bartenders used to run a scam on guys at the bar. If they thought you were buzzed and you payed with a $20, they would short you $5 in your change pile. We caught on when we noticed a few guys would only keep just enough money for another beer on the bar, and we were shorted exactly $5 on two different occasions. We caught the bartender pulling the stunt the 2nd time. Two different bartenders making the same mistake, unlikely. We always tipped well, so they didn't have a reason to do this, other than greed. more

Mouth-watering eats, imperial-sized pints (hooray!!)...and the real story about this vet thing... 5/19/2008

As a local of the Jewelry District for over 20 years, I have gotten to know Coco's (est.'84) very well over the years. The place has truly evolved into a gem. What was once pub grub with cheap brews has become a culinary wonderland with imperial pints, fantastic drink specials, and amazingly attentive service. The ambience is a bit dark, but the cool shadows compliment the fast-paced world of the jewelry district just outside. While I cannot get over there as much as I would like any more, I would recommend this place in a heart beat to any one - local or tourist alike. I doubt you'll find a better value for a great meal in Center City. Pros: diverse menu; great value for your buck! Cons: I don't live closer more

Move to Baghdad 3/31/2008

Stopped in this bar several times over the years but since finding out the owner is against raising a glass to an American Hero (Sgt Matt Maupin, who fought for this horse's rear right to own his own bar) who was cowardly assassinated by iraqi insurgents, I would never degrade myself by entering this establishment again. Maybe the owners should seriously think about closing shop and reopening in the Northwest region of Baghdad. For those who have fought for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know. Have either owners served? I doubt it. I raise a glass to Matt Maupin .....you too Chris. Cons: owners more

Food overshadowed by arrogance of owner 3/31/2008

The food at this restaurant is surprisingly good however, that does not make up for the arrogance of the owner. more

Owner Disparages Soldier‎ 3/31/2008

I was in Coco's enjoying a better than average meal when an email reached me that the remains of a POW/MIA from Iraq, Sgt Matt Maupin, had been found. He has been missing for four years. I politely raised my voice to get the attention of the 12-15 people in the bar, and asked them to raise a glass in his memory. As I went to sit down the owner raced over and told me that my actions were not allowed. ""You cannot yell in here,"" he said. He continued with a passive aggressive monologue about me making noise. This in a place that has multiple tvs tuned to every sports event, where yelling at the tv is routine. Apparently, this wonderful human being thinks the death of a soldier, fighting for this man's right to run a bar, is not worthy of 20 seconds of noise, but a three pointer by UNC can raise the roof. Whatever a person's position on the war, an American who dies in the fight deserves better. I will never step foot in the place again and would suggest that no one who has ever worn the uniform do so either. Pros: Food Cons: Owner more

Okay 7/25/2007

Coco's is a nice place to visit now and then. There are two owners, one which is very nice and friendly. The other owner is a bit overpowering. He is friendly but seens to manipulates all conversation. There seemed to be regulars at the bar that the owner converses with, but seems to be one sided only. I was there with my boyfriend and he was very loud. Seems to need alot of attention. The food was very good..very surprising for a place like that. Service was excellent. If you want returning customers...the owners need to step back a bit and let the customers enjoy themselves. Pros: waitstaff friendly, attentive, prompt Cons: owner more

Good Food, Real People 9/21/2006

Unbelievable, unexpected food. The chef is extremely creative and talented and has an obvious passion for food. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Go on an off hour and they'll treat you like an old friend. The owner is a good guy. Very hands on and loves to mingle with the crowd. It's my neighborhood bar, even though I live 20 minutes away. Pros: The food, the crowd Cons: Can get loud more

Great food in a relaxed atmosphere 9/9/2006

I recently had dinner at Coco's and I would definitely recommend it! Walking in, Coco's just looks like a run of the mill bar. There was a ND vs. Penn State football game on the multitude of televisions gracing the wall, along with many drinking football fans. The interior is a little dark, but I think that actually added to the experience. Not too smokey, a little loud I guess. Despite the typical bar ambiance, the food was fabulous! We started with the bruschetta, which included a small salad and was topped with goat cheese. Loved it! The entrees ordered included fresh Tilapia in a lemon sauce, jack daniels filet mignon, a dijon glazed sirloin with gorgonzola mashed potatoes, and a crabmeat quesadilla. Everything was just wonderful! All of the ingredients were fresh. Service was great. There was a good number of regulars hanging around. If I lived in center city, I would make Coco's a weekly stop. Pros: Very relaxed, good location, great service Cons: A little loud more

Ehhhh 8/7/2006

The place has great food, a descent beer selection, and a number of excellent plasma televisions. I liked the dark quiet atmosphere too. Our bartender Marcus was quick with our drinks and seemed pretty cool too. So why the ehh? I did not like the owner one bit. He was extremely condescending and quick to oppose anything that came from my mouth (unless I was submitting to his self-proclaimed godliness, which was not about to happen). I left the bar wondering if I was being passive-aggressively insulted by this guy. I would like go back in there, but if I don't like the owner then I just don't want to support the cause. Sorry Coco's, maybe I'll come visit you again when it's under new ownership. Who knows hopefully this guy is a replaceable partner. Marcus I wish you the best of luck you are an excellent bartender! Pros: Food, beer selection, atmosphere Cons: the owner more
