Wedding Ceremony 12/16/2009

My spectacular and wonderfully romantic boyfriend popped the question and then asked--can we do the ceremony at the most beautiful and majestic amusement park/Mexican food restaurant on West Colfax? Yes and we've been happily married for 5 years. more

Fun that spans generations! 8/8/2009

Casa Bonita is GREAT! I even love their food. I have been going there since I was a child and now I take my children and they love it. If you want a fun family time together then you must visit Casa Bonita! more

I'VE LOVE CASA BONITA for 30++ years 3/18/2009

I've love Casa Bonita since I was a teenager, I've taken my children and now my grandchildren. We love the food and the entertainment. If you need a stuffy, adult meal and entertainment go somewhere else. Let us kids enjoy being kids! more

AMAZING! 6/2/2008

What is WRONG with you people!??? Casa Bonita is AMAZING fun for ALL ages! Yes, the food is certainly not the reason one visits but it is quite a dining experience! I have been going since I was 5 and have always enjoyed this place. Sure, it may be a little cheesy at times but Casa Bonita is a FUN experience and I highly recommend it to anyone. I don't know if some of you who have written reviews are pseudo-foodies with what you think are "refined palates" and critique this place as if it were some kind of upscale, expensive restaurant... but get real; this is a great place to visit and besides the food (that leaves a bit to be desired), you will not be disappointed. more

"Beautiful House" But Really, Really Bad Food 1/11/2007

Have you ever been to Casa Bonita restaurant in Lakewood, Colorado? (Judy's Book has it listed in Denver, the web site says Lakewood.) If you’re a fan of South Park (the TV show), you might think it would be an entertaining idea just to check it out. My advice? *Don’t.* Casa Bonita is the “Disneyland” of restaurants. It comes complete with the cave-like walls and meandering pathways that give one the distinct feeling they’re traveling through an amusement park line to board a fun ride. There’s even that same Log Jam ride mist pumped into the air! (Or maybe it just originates from the waterfall and the big pool where the divers dive.) There is an arcade http://www.casabonitadenver.com/close_up_arcade.htm tucked inside the cavernous building, along with various other things that would lure kids to tug at their parents' sleeves to go to Casa Bonita (similar to Cartman on South Park). A cotton candy stand, an area where an artist draws those dorky little caricatures of people who later don’t know why in the world they paid for that, an odd little puppet show box http://www.casabonitadenver.com/close_up_puppetshow.htm with dusty puppets that no one is animating, etc. The “shows” are aimed at kids, as well. Check out a picture from the “Chiquita the Angry Gorilla” skit http://www.casabonitadenver.com/close_up_gorilla.htm and you'll get the idea. While a little loud, it is not an unpleasant atmosphere. Most of the restaurant is open and airy. The building is large and they did a good job making it interesting, albeit geared mostly toward a child’s tastes. There *is* something unpleasant at Casa Bonita, however. It is the food. We’ve all had dining experiences where something wasn’t quite palatable or exactly to our liking, etc. This wasn’t like that. At this restaurant, both my fiancé and I were actually scared that we would get sick if we ate our meals. The food looked bad, and certainly nothing even remotely close to “great Mexican food”, which is the claim they make--in writing! http://www.casabonitadenver.com/index.htm (Where they also claim to be the "tastiest place to eat in Denver!") It was already evident that, could we be fortunate enough to find our server, returning the inedible dishes would be an exercise in futility. They would only be replaced with another identically inedible dish. Evidence to prove that theory sat before us: my fiancé’s plate. Even though we had ordered different meals, his plate was an exact twin to mine. Double the displeasure. I don’t know *what* the two separate and toxic looking spills of cheese-colored thin liquid were that had been ladled out over the whatever-that-was underneath, but it was actually too scary looking to chance eating. This was Bart Simpson, pull-a-three-eyed-fish-out-of-the-pond type of "scary" that I'm talking about here. The rice wasn’t Mexican rice, either, more like something along the lines of rice pilaf. Only not. We figured we would be safe enough eating the small, miserly little scoop that had been rationed out onto our plates. Because the scoop of rice was so tiny, it was able to stand clear of that freakish liquid stuff and whatever perils lay beneath it. Even the chips and salsa were actually BAD! And weird! I’ve never really found that to be true anywhere! (Kind of like a cookie—hard to find one I don’t like.) Whatever the chips were made of, I’ve never tasted before in my life. (Soylent Green??) The salsa was bizarre and I had never experienced anything like *it* before, either. Its viscosity was indescribably strange and surely resembled nothing in the known world of salsas. A packet of Taco Bell hot sauce retrieved from 1972 would have shot leaps and bounds (literally) beyond whatever was slumped into that “salsa” dish. The beauty part is that their dinners are "all you can eat"! "Inedible" backed by "all you can eat"... hmm. I would imagine they haven't had any takers on that offer. Yes, it was a night of all new experiences, but completely lacking in any that would fall into the “wondrous” category. The words “exceedingly cheep” (and, again, “bad”) come to mind. (“Bad” might be an adequate descriptive for the surrounding neighborhood, as well.) If you want to entertain your kids and an arcade serving up cardboard pizzas just won’t fly with them; if you find yourself pressed into going, then perhaps just order some Soylent Green (they call that "chips”) and a soda (get a straw) in the turnstile and skip that standard issue "meal". “Turnstile” you say? Yes, turnstile. I guess I was so consumed with the fact that we *couldn’t* consume our meals that I left that bit of information about the turnstile for last. You place your order in a turnstile and then you go get a tray and stand in line to collect your food, cafeteria-style, and then you are shown to your table. Then, judging by what we repeatedly heard around us by the completely inconceivable notion of “regulars”, you try to coerce the employee who seated you to please take you out of the back of the cave and situate you at one of the numerous tables with a view of the water so you can watch the “cliff divers”. Strangely, in a perusal through the restaurant after our “meal” we found that the prime, non-cave seating areas seemed to have an equal number of empty tables as they did occupied. Interesting. Did people need to tip the seating staff not to be tucked into a cave? Do people tip seating staff at Disneyland? I would have gladly slipped him two free dinners and some 14-day-old-decaf, had I known. Just as well that we were tucked completely into the very back of a cave, I suppose. It saved us from having anyone else witness our sheer mortification--and borderline terror—at what we’d gotten ourselves into. I've come to the simple conclusion that a good rule of thumb for an enjoyable adult dining experience might be this: If you find yourself entering a restaurant and are faced with a turnstile in which you must place your order, simply turn around and exit the building. *Just exit the building, people.* more

Okay for Kids 2/16/2006

This is the place to go to keep the kiddies entertained and let's face it--how many restaurants have cliff-divers? So what if it's a bit cheesy and you are herded through lines like a cattle-call. It's still a Denver experience. And the young ones will love it. Just don't go there expecting to be bowled over by the food. It's your basic Mexican fare, nothing distinctive or fancy, but you will find yourself getting caught up with the entertainment. It's fun! more

Good Times, Bad Food! 1/31/2006

Casa Bonita is a must have experience for everyone who has ever been to Denver! Don't expect great food-it is comparable to a TV dinner, but the entertainment makes up for it! They have cliff divers, caves, mariachi bands and pretty good sopapillas (those make up for the bad food!) Expect a wait on the weekends and holidays. Lunch time during the week is the best time to go if you don't like crowds! more

Crazy fun for kids, bad Mexican food 8/18/2005

As a favorite South Park episode says, Casa Bonita is the "Disneyland of Mexican restaurants". This place is definitely tons of cheesy, kitchy fun for adults and kids (especially kids!) and I do recommend it, if you can stand the substandard Tex-Mex fare. The sopapillas have to be the only thing that is worth mentioning. However, with Black Bart's cave, mariachis bands, old-timey photographs (dress up in old west gear for a commemorative photo!) a cliff diver and a host of other little shows, it is a fun time for the family. more

Fun dining for children 8/17/2005

Another place to take your kids in Denver where they will probably enjoy themselves immensely but the adults may only tolerate it. This large Mexican restaurant/ entertainment center has all sorts of activities and attractions going on to stimulate your kids imagination and wear them out. The food is really not very good but is served very fast, café style. You must buy their food to get in, no bringing in your own. Kids can enjoy strolling musicians, a high dive and stunt show, small amusement rides, game arcades, puppet shows, and seemingly endless tunnels and caverns to wander through and explore. My small kids especially enjoyed taking a swing at the piñata. Grown-ups shouldn’t look to close, the age and wear of the facility may make you cringe. Worth the visit just to see but not a place you would want to visit to often in my opinion. more

Fun and exciting 8/14/2005

Okay, Casa Bonita is definitely not known for its food, but it's not terrible, I have been going there since I was a child back in the 70's and have never gotten sick or completely hated the food. But you're not going here for the food, you're going for the entertainment. Between the live cliff divers, Mariachi band, Old fashioned photographer, treasure chest, video arcade, puppet show, black Barts hideway cave, mysterious computer generated wishing well, and mexican dancers, this place is packed full of fun. It is well worth the long wait to get in on the weekends. more

Horrible food with a pink facade 8/11/2005

This place is really really wretched. It is a strange phenomena that tourists just seem to love. Many people have only been here once for good reason. That being said, kids under 10 love this place. Its crazy and zany and the food is terrible but it is a big hit with the young crowd, take your kids at least once and be a hero. more

entertaining if you can stomach the food 8/8/2005

A great place to take the kids, keeps them busy. The food as said before leaves something to be desired, it certainly is not the best there is(Not even close). The mariachi band is great to the little kids and serenades them if asked. The staff is helpful with the little ones as well, as long as you ask. All of the activities are more for the younger kids, my 11 year old nephew was entertained for a short while before he became bored. Unless you want to keep them supplied with a constant flow of tokens that is! More for the atmosphere than anything, a must see at least once...The fried ice cream is a treat and a half...the sopapillas too! more

Casa Bonita 7/15/2005

The perfect tourist destination. A Mexican restaurant that on the outside is a pink Spanish mission complete with bell tower and fountain. The inside is divided into country courtyards, grand ballrooms and an outdoor paradise with palm trees, waterfall and hidden grottos. The food is awful but to get in and play you have to eat. There are caves to explore, cliff divers and flame jugglers to watch, silver and gold mines, a jail, strolling mariachis and Mexican dancers puppet shows and magicians. A great fun place to eat. Even if you don’t eat much of your dinner, the free all you can eat sopaipillas are the bomb. more
