Most used bookstores that are for thinking people are small and specialized. At nearly 20 years old, Periodals Paradise has a hug philosphy and alternative religionns section. While you will still find run-of-the-mill Danielle Steele novels, you will also find provocative, thought-provoking novels translated from languages around the world.
Even sections such as their music reflects the Hawthorne clientele. I found a book of Welsh carols in their original language for an opera singer friend of mine...a book that would have been passed over by most second hand book stores.
Periodicals originally opened as a, well, periodicals or magazine store. True to its name, you can also find rather recent issues of magazines ranging from the New England Journal of Medine to Popular Mechanics for a fraction of their newstand cost.
This is truely a place I like to visit periodicially.
