Editorial review from Citysearch 1/29/2014

Buyer beware!! HIGHLY UNETHICAL BUSINESS. Andy & Bax does NOT honor their return policy. After this review, I'm filing a BB claim against them. I purchased 9 items plus patches for potential gear to use as costumes for an event. I was not the decision maker so I needed examples to bring back to the office. We did not need 5 of the items and I went back to return them, perfectly unused. On the receipt it clearly states items may be returned within 30 days for a complete refund. I had $150 of brand new merchandise. The manager treated me instantly suspicious and denied the returns saying he knew I bought them for a party. I explained they were options among many and we had decided not to use them. I explained again WE DID NOT USE THEM! And, I was furious he was calling me a liar. To prove we didn't use them, I brought in the suits we ended up making. There was a big white guy now behind the counter and he said WE'RE THRU WITH YOU, LEAVE. I have not been this upset and angry in years. If you buy anything from them, make sure you know it's definitely a keeper. more

Great Outdoor / Hardware Store 7/12/2010

This store has a great selection and great prices on non high end but mostly perfectly workable gear. Store employees can be hard to get a hold of when busy but are always helpful and informative when accessed. Furthermore, they totally lack the, ""Too cool for school or at least you"", attitude commonly found in the more shee shee stores in the Portland area. Not every price is the lowest in town. When spending what to you is serious coin; do your research. They are also very cool about returns. On a further note. If you are outfitting yourself as a GI Joe wannabee, maybe there are better places. Also, if you pay $5 for a Taiwanese knife, don't be surprised if it doesn't perform like a Benchmade costing 20 times more. (they have those too) Pros: Lots of neat stuff, low prices Cons: Wont find high end gear, Not every price the lowest in town more

Still posers after all these years 3/25/2010

Every once in a while, since about 1980, we go back to see if they've changed. They haven't. Don't even bother with this place - go out to Boring or Aloha if you want surplus. First, the cash register still just lists prices - twice we purchased a number of items; found a couple days later we didn't get all the items in the bags though we paid for them. Both times we took our receipt in & they acted like we were trying to rip them off - they got our money & we didn't get our items. They weren't even expensive ($7 highest) - you'd think someone would notice something left behind the counter but they don't bother with anything like organization. Second, the prices on so many things (now they carry Condor - overpriced) are higher & sometimes much higher than you'll pay elsewhere. A few items are put out at low cost but these are usually poor quality (their blades are almost all bad Asian steel, for more $ than they're worth & more than you'd pay at the late great Joe's for example, if you want a cheap knife with a bendy-blade). A lot of Asian steel is good, but you won't find it here. Third, there are some decent guys there but the manager & his pets are nasty as all get out - disagree with 'em even politely & you'll get a real dose of their attitude, which is arrogant. They seem to think they're doing me a favor by running a dirty, expensive store. Fourth, their 'surplus' is godawful! It's always been peculiar, this last visit it looked like a bunch of stuff they'd picked up at a Goodwill & repriced for their own sale. We keep hoping this place will change & it just gets more attitude as the years go on - that seems to be what it's all about now, the attitude & appearance, no substance. Pros: Faux surplus store with dirt-based decor Cons: Overpriced, poor attitude, poor quality more

Glorified sporting goods store 8/17/2008

If you're into genuine military surplus at low prices, try Sgt. Gators at 12255 SE 282nd Ave. in Boring, OR. Andy & Bax has mostly civilian knock-offs of military issue gear at high prices. A lot of their stuff doesn't even pretend to be military; they're just plain old sporting goods. If you're clueless and want to ""look cool,"" this is your nirvana. more

Spend an hour or two browsing! 12/13/2007

This has been one of my favorite stores for over 15 years! Pros: crammed tight product placement makes for less walking. Cons: Parking more

Kinda spooky 4/2/2004

I feel like I'm in the Deliverance movie when I go into A&B, so I search and leave ASAP. It has a weird vibe in there, like they're hiding prisoners in closets, and I might be next. They do however have good prices. Pros: Price, Selection more

FAST and COOL 4/14/2003

I have been using Andy & Bax for almost 20 years. They have NEVER let me down. If they don't have it they will direct me to a place where I can, but that only happened once. The guys there are helpful when you need them, the store is a little on the dark side, but for the $$ they have I'll take the dark. I can't even tell you how much they have saved me over the years in $$$. GOOD JOB A&B! Pros: dark, sometime dirty, sometimes messy Cons: low prices, ALWAYS something new, prices more

Warm and Dry for pennies on the Dollar! 2/9/2003

I have found some of my favorite outdoor clothes and equipment here. You can find things here that are not plastered with labels and advertisment, it is focused on the function. Visit once and make it a regular stop! more
