This place was great. We planned to be shopping all day for snowboarding gear and we got it all done in one hour at US Outdoor Store, with the help of the friendly and helpful staff of course. I can't wait to go back when I have more money to spend!
Pros: snowboarding gear out the wazoo!

We spent a couple of weekends looking for a lower-end commuter bike all over the metro area, and had no luck finding one we like, or finding truly helpful staff until we finally came to River City Bicycles. It was very busy and yes, we had to wait a while to get someone to help us, but once we did, they were just great. Unlike other places, nobody at RCB made us feel like bike-ignorant idiots, or tried to push us to buy outside of our price range. Instead, they made really helpful suggestions, gave us advice but also backed off when we needed time to consider things. We did not mind having to wait as the associates were helping others - we knew we weren't ignored. Most importantly, the bike selection was great for all price ranges, and the bike we got for my husband is awesome. Highly recommended!!! The free espresso drinks were a cherry on top of out great experience.
Pros: selection, friendly and knowledgable staff
Cons: none

You never know what you will find at Andy and Bax! I've found old Vietnam-era sleeping bags, pieces off the USS Valdez, knives, raingear, halloween costumes, and even sleds at Andy and Bax. This is the liquidators of the PX as well as the Army Navy supplies. Like any other liquidator, you never know what you will find here. The difference is that most items have durability and portability in mind. Long before surivivalism became popular again I found wind-up radios here. Duck Boots? Here. Puddle jumpers for little boys and girls? Here. Rations? Here.
The downside to Andy and Bax is that it is organized like a field supplier at the end of a battle...very disorganized and full of dust. So, if you're asthmatic, you might want to purchase on of those gas masks first thing before you shimmy down to the basement.

This is a great shop that has great deals on just about everything in the store. The shop is small but you can find just about everything for your camping trip. The staff was good and helpful, even making suggestions that were more affordable and easier to find. I just wish there were more in Portland.

I used to go here quite a bit (before all the chain stores hit the area), because it was the only place to find certain things, but I find that I still enjoy going here even now. It has a less corporate feel and I like that it is a local business. They have a really nice selection too - many quality items for camping, hiking, etc. The staff is very helpful also - I think they take their job maybe more seriously than at some larger retail places so they seem to really know their stuff inside and out (literally!)
If you like the outdoors and need some gear, you should check this place out!

I bought my snowboard bindings at Signal last May and the gentleman who helped me was extremely helpful and explained the differences between all the brands and types of bindings. Just yesterday I went in to look for a new board and the young woman who helped me was very knowledgeable and didn't pressure me to make a decision right away. I left the store without buying a board (but having purchased a jacket and some other items), and called back later in the day after doing some board research online to ask her opinion. She was very nice and said to call back anytime. I love this store!
Pros: Smart, helpful staff that actually use the products they're selling. Great sales.
Cons: Items are only affordable (for me) when they're on sale.

Clearly the most knowleadge staff in town in regards to skiing equipment. They did an excellent job refitting my boots and were patient with spending a lot of time with me working on the best fit. When we realized that we had done everything we could, and that the sizing was wrong, they took back the boots after a year of hard use, and gave me a great deal on in store credit. They may cost a bit more, but their knowleadge and ability to stand by their product are more than worth it!
