I recently moved to Portland and read on Portlandpicks, a great review on Kelly Peach who is a new stylist to 220 Salon. She came from Fred Segal salon in Santa Monica, California...

220 Salon 1/9/2009

After reading some reviews I felt inclined to write one of my own. I have also been going to Jodie for 8+years. Even when I lived in LA I would wait to be in Portland to have my hair cut by Jodie. Her color and cuts both are excellent. I have never been disappointed. In fact, every time I leave I feel great and can't wait to go back! If you like straight forward, boring cuts then don't go to Jodie. She is artistic and highly trained in trendy and current cuts. The posts that attack her character are so ridiculous I almost have to laugh! I will continue going to Jodie as long as she is at 220 Salon! more

WARNING DO NOT HAVE YOUR HAIR CUT AT 220 1/4/2009

I had long beautiful hair and Jodie hacked it to pieces. She has an idea of how people's hair should look, and doesn't appear to care what the client wants. I cried for days after my cut, and people literally commented on how horrible it looked, following this hack job. PLEASE if you are looking for a new salon, SKIP this salon. The only worse hair cut I've had in my entire life, was when I was 7 years old and I cut my own hair with plastic scissors. \r My hair still looks dreadful, months later. I look like I have a cross between a mullet, and like a reject from a 1980's rock hair band. Pros: In a year or so, I'll have pretty hair again Cons: Jodie destroyed my hair more

Amazing Stylists Amazing Salon 12/31/2008

I've been going to Jodie for 10+ plus years, as have my entire family, We've recommend her and the salon to countless friends and associates, men and women alike and have never had any express any displeasure with her or the salon.\r \r Look if you're a yuppy princess this probably isn't the place for you. However if you're a person who considers yourself a Portlander you'll fit right in. Pros: Great atmosphere, fun people, fantasic environment Cons: Parking more

Wonderful Salon 12/20/2008

Not only is my hair wonderful (thank you Jodie) , but everything about this salon is wonderful. I have referred all of my friends and family and clients to this salon for so many years and we all love this salon. We also love all of the stylist who work there, so open and accepting. Thank you 220! more

5 Star Salon and Stylist 12/15/2008

I have been going to this salon for the last year and a half and have loved every hair-cut and color that Jodie has given me. Whoever has been writing all the negative reviews must have alterior motives or a personal vendetta but nothing could be further from the truth. I have tremendous confidence in Jodie's talent and ability to give me a great cut and color each time. I have short thick hair and it is crucial to get a precise cut that I literally have to do nothing to until the next cut. My hair looks fantastic for over 10 weeks which is basically unheard of for short hair. I love Jodie and the salon and I highly reccommend it. Pros: great cut and clor more

Message from 220 Salon 12/12/2008

The stylists at 220 Salon have noticed that ever since one of our own was voted ""Best in Portland"" in the August 2008 issue of Portland Monthly, we have received a lot of harsh, negative reviews here on Citysearch. Prior to that we had only ever been reviewed positively. To us, they just don't ring true. Many of them include 'facts' we know to be untrue and we suspect that most of them are from one source. We stand resolutely behind our work and have nothing but gratitude for our clients, old and new. While we realize we cannot possibly please everyone, we have not recently received any complaints in the salon regarding either our work or our professionalism. We encourage anyone with an issue to contact us and we will do our utmost to make it right. In the meantime we hope that anyone reading these reviews enjoys the positive and takes the negatives for what we believe they are: creative writing. more

What happened to me was not 5 stars 12/12/2008

Tomorrow I am going in for a consultation with a new stylist. It has been four months since I went to Jodie and she completely destroyed my hair. I have lived with this for a long time and it as not been pleasant. At the time, it seemed I was making a wise choice. In this 4 months, I have suffered the humiliation and comments of the butchering of my hair. I needed to purchase a flat iron, curling iron and several bands, clips and holders. I used to shower, comb my hair and leave the house. No matter the cut, my hair used to be easy to style until now. I am brokenhearted when I look at photos both now and previous honestly feeling that my hair will never return to its original lustre. The cut was ill-performed, unskilled, rushed and horrible. I did not give free will to do whatever. I asked questions, gave suggestions and we finalized the overall look, length and style before one hair was cut. I walked out looking nothing like we discussed. My hair looks nothing like it used to. I have no doubt at some point or with some people Jodie performs well. I was not one of the lucky ones. Whatever the reason she chose to do this, I do not know. I cannot speak for her. I do warn others that before you assume you will receive her best, be concerned because I received her worst. I am completely uncomfortable with the idea of having someone new try to style my hair again. My trust in stylists was shattered. It makes me sad she smiled at my face and allowed me to believe she would do her best and she betrayed me. I have read others' personal attacks on her and I understand the anger. I feel I was attacked. When I left the salon, Jodie no longer has to live with what she did to me. Sadly, I do. more

IVE BEEN COMING HERE FOR YEARS AND COUNTING! WONDERFUL SALON! 12/10/2008

I HAVE BEEN A LONG TIME CLIENT, AS MANY OF MY FRIENDS AND REFERRALS. CLEARLY THERE IS A PERSONAL ATTACK ON THIS WONDERFUL, TALENTED, HARD WORKING GROUP STYLISTS. ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN IN THIS SALON WOULD FEEL THE EFFORT AND THE LOVE AND APPRECIATION FOR WHAT THEY DO AND I AM PERSONALLY OFFENDED BY THESE RUTHLESS ATTACKS THAT ARE OBVIOUSLY HOLDING A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST MY HAIRSTYLIST WHO I LOVE AND ALL OF THE OTHER AMAZING PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE.\r IM SORRY FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT EXPERIENCED THIS SALON AND WILL BE RELYING ON THIS CITY SEARCH SITE RATHER THAN HAVING A GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH 220 SALON... more

Blitzkrieg 12/10/2008

What is happening here people? I was randomly looking through Citysearch and saw the blitzkrieg of awful reviews. Did anyone else happen to notice all the bad ones were written on the same day? Someone went after that salon and that stylist with a vengeance. Another tip, click on the reviewers name and see if they have written any other reviews. That will give you some idea of the validity of these reviews. Stylists are funny creatures. It does not escape me that someone who was fired or left on bad terms wouldn't sit down with a glass of wine and a few friends and bash someplace. This site can be a blessing and a curse. I dont know any of these ladies and have never been to the salon but in the interest of fairness, I needed to comment on this. Jealousy and Envy can make a simple person act awful and that is what I think happened here. I'm just sayin. more

Love Nicci, Love 220 12/10/2008

It's fascinating that these negative reviews started after Jodi was named best stylist in Portland in a local magazine. And that whenever a good review is posted, many follow soon after that bump it off the front page. Hmmm...? Someone needs to get a life. For real.\r \r Don't believe the negative hype. I've followed Nicci from salon to salon, and I couldn't be more thrilled that she landed at 220. It's a great space with great people. Everyone is always friendly and welcoming. I let Nicci decide waht she wants to do with my hair - style and color - because I trust her implicitly. My most recent foray into bangs has brought so many compliments. And my color is always gorgeous. \r \r I would whole-heartedly recommend Nicci and 220 to my friends. I often do, and they end up with amazing hair.\r \r \r \r \r \r \r Pros: Great space, fun people, amazing hair Cons: Parking during Saturday Market *shudder* more

Warning 12/9/2008

If you have long hair do not, I repeat. do not go to Jodi. She purposely cut off all my hair when I expressly said I did not want a big change in the length. It is not an honest mistake. There is no rhyme or reason she would do that. She said she was unable to grow her hair that long. I have had my hair cut many times by hairdressers who echoed the same sentiment and did not cut it all off. A foot of my hair is gone, more on the sides. This can not be undone or changed. My hair was healthy, no need to cut that much. I should have been the person to decide when I wanted to make that change, period. The cut is ugly, not because it is too short, because it is several layers. It is different lengths. There are waves and colics. She used a razor in a few places and started at my scalp. It is the ugliest haircut ever. There is no way you could honestly say this is a good cut. There is no way you can say you did not do this on purpose. Shame on you. You are a discredit to your profession. If you cannot rise above your own pettiness you should not cut hair. Run as fast as you can to another salon if you want to save your hair. Cons: Your wishes are ignored more

Wonderful place! Highly recommend Liberty. 12/8/2008

I want to share what a wonderful hair stylist Liberty is at hair salon 220. I drive all the way from West Linn just to see her. Her styling is so exceptional that I'm able to stretch my haircut up to 3 months! I have a really busy schedule as a business owner and mother of two very active children, so it is nice to go and be so well taken care of in such a lovely place. more

BATTLEFIELD!! 12/3/2008

Holy cow...all of a sudden, it seems like this salon is Portland's new favorite battlefield. Not wanting to add to the personal notes that these reviews have turned towards. Let's rate it like this:\r \r A little bit about the scenario...\r \r 1: I have difficult hair and lots of it\r 2: I wanted to grow it out long, like a frickin' princess\r 3: I didn't want to cut any length off ever, since I'm growing it out\r 4: I didn't want to be spoken to in a salon, or anywhere for that matter, as though I am a preschooler or a puppy.\r \r Enter salon 220...\r \r 1: No puppy talk, thank god. I am a grown person, and almost princess for crying out loud\r 2: I was told in order to grow out my thick, frizzy hair, I need to take off some of my damaged length, and keep it layered so it doesn't look like a brick. (Bricks aren't very royal). This will allow me to move forward in the princess process.\r 3: Received excellent cut, and some lovely highlights\r 4: Got less hair than I thought I wanted, but somehow it looked longer than when I came in. (The very same day, neighbors said how much longer my hair looked, and healthy too.)\r 5: After many months and cuts, my hair looks better and better, truly.\r 6: Am now a loyal client with ladies in waiting (referrals), and hair that actually fetches compliments instead of hats.\r \r I always have had great experiences at 220, hope this is helpful, and doesn't land in the warzone. Pros: Talent, knowledge, relaxed atmosphere more

Lacking integrity 12/2/2008

I can only describe my time at 220 as unbelievable in the worst way possible. I was misinformed that Jodie was good and went to get my hair done. We talked at length about what I wanted and what she recommended and what happened is nothing like any of it. I am under the impression that Jodie knows how badly she messed up my hair because she left before I paid and refused to return my call when I tried to see if she could repair what she had done. I was very polite and respectful and willing to give her a chance to repair the damage herself. A true professional and a person with inegrity would fix it. I am the one who was left to go to another person who needed to color correct and cut my hair again and she was appalled at how bad my hair looked especially after I showed her a photo taken the week before the cut. I also needed to pay again which is unfair. The saddest part is Jodie cut it so short there was no way to fix it without going shorter. I do not wear my hair this short and was extremely clear that I did not want it cut that way. Not only was a tremendous amount of length cut off but the volume is gone as she thinned it out. I have never undergone this unbelievable of a situation. After going to 220 salon, my hair look terrible. No other way to describe it. The color was uneven throughout the head, the layers were uneven and they were cut up into the hair. The style was not flattering at all. I only wanted a good cut and darker hair without a lot of length cut off. I was not asking for anything difficult. I certainly did not think I would be harmed in the process. Wihout an explaination of what happened, an attempt to correct it or even a call back there is no way that I would tell anyone to go there. more

220 is the best hair Salon. 12/2/2008

I've been a customer at 220 salon for years now. I must say that I have never had such consistantly great haircuts, street stopping compliments and all around wonderful experiences EVERY time I have my hair done . I have had my hair cut, colored, or styled by almost every person that works at 220 so what I am telling you is that you would be CRAZY not to go and experience any hair treatment, cut or color for yourself! I have been living in Orange County and Los Angeles over the last two years and still cannot find anywhere or anyone who is as good as 220. I fly to Portland just to have my haircut at 220!!! Pros: cutting edge hair stylists, ambience of the salon, reasonable pricing more

The Stylists at 220 Salon totally get it!!! 12/2/2008

The thing I love the most about 220 Salon is Nicola. She is fantastic! I send everyone I know to her. Each one of my friends that sees her is unique. The reason that I trust her for them is that she totally gets each individual person. I have never heard a complaint from any of my girl/boy friends that go to Nicola. When I first started going to her I wanted to grow out my hair color. I have pretty long hair and I thought the process would be hard and I would cave and get my hair re-colored. She did such a great job that I never worried about how my hair looked during the process. It's still long and all my own color. My cuts are great. I not only trust her with my hair but with my conversation. She wouldn't tell a fly. I also enjoy all the other people in 220. This is a salon that caters to everybody. more

Fantastic Salon and Stylists 11/29/2008

I've now had several cuts at 220 Salon with Jodie and had a terrific experience start to finish. My hair is a tricky cut and the stylist I'd been going to for years left.......inevitably, a new stylist means months of ""training"" before they understand what I like. Not with Jodie - she's honestly the first stylist I've ever tried who gave me a terrific cut the very first time. And who I trusted completely. That, and the entire salon has a great feel - not fussy and pretentious (or trying to be pretentious in order to be hip) - just funky, relaxed and comfortable.\r \r It's not for everyone - some people want a more corporate environment and approach. But the quality of the people there and the kind of service and ability they bring is unparalleled. I highly recommend it. more

Changed a lot 11/27/2008

The salon has changed in the past year. I believe the press has caused an attitude within the workers. They are careless, sloppy and arrogant about work that has gone downhill. The staff has become rude and petty talking about others while they are doing your hair. I could care less about other people in Portland. You do not know if anyone in the salon knows them. As big as we are, Portland is a tight knit community. Shameful you would talk about people whose hair you messed up, how upset they were and you have the nerve to be laughing about it. That person has to live with that haircut and has a right to be upset. Really, has a little bit of notoriety has gone to your heads ? It should make you strive to be better not inspire you to become lazy, less talented and snobbish. I won't be coming back nor would I tell anyone else to. more

Expensive 11/26/2008

The first time I went to the Studio 220 was a good experience and every visit ever since became more and more a disaster. The first hair dresser kept pumping up the price by 5 dollars every time I visited. By the time of my third visit I paid 35 bucks for a 20 minute hair cut. That makes it over 70 bucks for one hour! I guess doctor?s charge that much for their time! I have easy hair and it is not too long. The girl also told me that a 5er tip is not enough. Daft! \r However, after a while I gave it another try. I decided on another hair dresser at 220. The result was not shocking but not flattering either. Not very well taken care I would say. Pros: friendly girls Cons: overpriced more

Talentless 11/24/2008

In a word. talentless. I excitedly set an appointment with Jodie for a new 'do. That excitement rapidly turned to dissapointment. I had a lot of hair to work with and could have received a great cut from a talented professional. I found none of that in Jodie. My hair has never looked this bad. When you go to get a haircut, you hope for a great cut, you are happy with a good cut, you expect at a minimum a decent cut that will get you through. My cut does not even rank at decent. I received a plain cut which is unsightly. There are several pieces that just hang there. Several parts are layered so unevenly it looks like a novice performed the cut. The real burn is so much of my hair was removed that it will be months before I can try again. Simply put. I walked in with my great, healthy hair that never, never gave me problems and now have to battle with it every day. No amount of time, effort or products can tame this mane. Sadly, sadly inefficient.\r more
