A Gem to the Philadelphia Gay Bar Scene 5/20/2010

I never knew 12th Air Command existed. When I was first told about it I thought "Well, I'm not a Veteran so I guess I won't be going..." To my pleasant surprise, it's not a Veteran based bar! Even a plain Jane like myself can go in and have an amazing time. There are three floors to this place. YES, THREE FLOORS!!! Each one provides something different depending on the day. During the week, the main 1st floor bar is open. Thursday night offers Karaoke. One of my favorite nights to go to 12th Air Command is Wednesday. Not only is it Hump Day, but they play a great, FREE game of Air Pop. When you walk in, you get a ticket, and every 15 minutes or so, a ticket # is called, If it's yours, you get to pop a balloon and have the chance to win a prize. It's simple, easy, and so fun. Fridays and Saturdays open the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor dance floor features a DJ on some nights, but always has some bumpin' tunes for you to enjoy your cocktails over. The best part about 12th Air Command is the 3rd Floor Skydeck. There's a beautiful view of Center City that is simply breathtaking at night. The Bartenders are very friendly, not pushy, and always up for conversation and suggestions on a new drink. Their attitudes are contagious and you find yourself smiling at the awesomeness. They make a special point to introduce you to everyone around you. It's one of those places that you can walk into by yourself, and leave with 5 new friends and connections. Whether you go for the dancing, the drinking, or just for the chance to meet someone, 12th Air is an amazing atmosphere for whatever your preference is. Pros: Sky Deck with a Beautiful View of Center City, A+ Service Cons: The Sky Deck is usually only open on weekends. more

Disturbia! 12/21/2008

I've been to this club multiple times in the past and have always had a good experience. I love the gayborhood and 12th air command hosts an eclectic crowd even among the gay community. It's a great place to go in the summer and the music is always up to date. If you are older you are older, you may not enjoy the teen nights but saturdays are the best day to go. Don't be put off by the sketchy back entrance. Watch out for the top step, no matter how sober or coordinated you are, you will almost always trip. : ) Pros: Great Dance Spot Cons: On and off some nights more

What a Filthy Club 3/10/2008

Overpriced, Dirty and gets some of the worst clientel in the city. You'd have more fun at a homeless shelter. more

It ain't Woody's! (And that ain't a bad thing.) 7/28/2007

The second-level dance floor has been known to get awfully crowded and sweaty but 12th Air is no stand-and-model affair. And, thank God, it doesn't try to be. The first floor is relaxed and includes a second bar in the back which tends to be a better place to hang if you're having a deep discussion with a friend (or whomever). The second floor is where the dancing happens and contains a second bar with pool tables and a large video screen. The third floor is more of a lounge but it does get crowded and noisy sometimes. The third floor also offers access to a huge deck with plenty of seating. For whatever reason, 12th Air gets treated like the bastard-child of the Philly gay bar scene but from what I can tell, it attracts a much happier, more relaxed crowd and it offers a lot more variety than almost any other place in town! Pros: More relaxed atmosphere, three floors offering lots to do Cons: None, really more

Under the stars 12/15/2003

During the warmer climate seasons, they have a wonderful outdoor lounge area with a beautiful picture of the skyline, and for the romantics nighttime is a great way for yous to see the stars..while enjoying your cocktails. Pros: great Dj's, good dance floor, great service Cons: Dance level too small more

the WORST 8/24/2003

"if it looks to good to be true. It probably is" bartender was not so happy to interrupt his conversation for us. The food was to be served at 6, there was not a waiter until 7 and at 5 after 8 I tracked down our server and inquired about our food. He was as whifty as I was starving. He told me that the food on the tray was mine. Yea one plate was, lol everything he ordered for all 3 of us(dinner and Apps.) were WRONG, so I told him we were going eleswhere and was called a name. So I hiked up the 4 floors back to the deck, got my party, and left. The B list bartenders are rude, the decor is velvet rope suspended between metal folding chairs, and the food? hmmm perhaps it is good I did not eat what I saw . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pros: cheap, location Cons: rude, dirty, awkward more

Most improved gay bar in Philadelphia 7/6/2002

I have to say that since the middle of 2001 the 12th air has improved. The beer is cheap. There is a deck on the third level which one can get a nice view of the west side of Center City. Service is good. 12th Air is turning into my new favorite gay bar. more

  • In Short
No doubt, this place has the most diverse crowd in the gayborhood. Stand at one of the downstairs bars and revel in the contradictions: 40-something chain smokers, cute college boys, disaffected urban hipsters and cool lesbians with tribal tattoos and cell phones. African- and Asian-American guys congregate upstairs to drink, dance and dish. Known for bringing to town popular actors from all-male videos, 12th Air Command also hosts the Jade Palace, a party for Asian-Americans and their admirers.
