Another Disappointing downtown ripoff 1/30/2006

Initially thought service was great.Actually it was because unlike the rest of the downtown eateries, it simply wasn't busy. The service quickly deteriorated. Food nothing special. Thirty four dollar steak with grissle. Chef stopped by the table once. Does he ever cook...he is constantly circling the establishment. Told him food was cold....no apology, no offer to bring warmer food. He said, ""if you overheat potatoes, they burn..."" Never heard that one before.Told waiter about grissle..he said ""rib eye sometimes has grissle in the middle"". He did not even bring the check, he sent a bus boy to do it. Had to ask to order mixed drink. I really thought it would be a stellar experience. Instead, it was just an experience. One which I will never repeat. more

Inattentive Service and boring cuisine 12/21/2005

My husband and I went to Zula's last night for an anniversary dinner. The wait staff was inattentive. I had to flag down a busboy to get more dressing for my salad. (There couldn't have been more than a single tablespoon of blue cheese dressing with my iceberg wedge!) The waiter took the teapot to refill with hot water and then forgot to bring it back. The chef came to the table when I said that the salmon was just so-so. I ended up putting some of the extra salad dressing on the salmon. All and all I'd say Zula is a level BELOW ho-hum! Pros: iuncrowded, quiet Cons: poor service, bland food more

Always a winner! 6/9/2005

My girlfriend and I ate at Zula for a last minute birthday dinner. Upon arrival a booth wasn't available so the host asked if we would like to have a cocktail in the bar and that one would be available shortly. The bartender offered a drink called a Zula blue for the birthday girl. She loved it. Our waiter (Todd) offered great suggestions including the BBQ Creole shrimp appetizer. I told him I wanted a wine to compliment our entrees. I was having the veal chop and she was having the tuna. The sommelier offered a Foley Pinot Noir. Jackie flipped over this wine and said she usually only drinks merlot. Our chocolate mousse dessert arrived with a sparkler blazing away and Happy Birthday Jackie written with chocolate on the plate. This is one of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had in Houston. We will be back!!! Pros: Romantic, Cool Tunes, Innovative food more

Very Good, But Not Quite Great 6/7/2005

Very cool atmospher, great service, and great food. But something was missing - They have the decor, music, and style but I did not feel it. Maybe it wass the crowd, or lack there of, but I did not leave 100% satisfied. When spending easily $100+ a couple eating becomes an experience, and although everything was good I left a little empty. We had the crab cake (excellent - but small portion for price), tuna (very good), veal chop (too fatty) and bread pudding for dessert (excellent). One bottle of wine total bill w/tip $160. Another note - the valet told us to eat at a different resteraunt, we did not listen but found it odd. Pros: Service, Style, Downtown Cons: Pricey more

Excuse me! 6/6/2005

Who writes these reviews. The place is nothing but decent. But nothing more. Service is horrible. Also it is a cold atmosphere. more

Wonderful Dining Spot. 2/14/2005

My husband and I tried Zula's at the recommendation of a co-worker of mine and we are thankful that she pointed us to it. The food we had was great. We had the Tuna Tartar appetizer which rivaled other Japanese establishements we had it at. I had the Ribeye which was done to perfection. The waiter was very attentive. We are very inexperienced when it come to red wine, so he asked us to describe the flavors we liked. We mentioned that we liked something that was a little on the fruity side and and he recommended a wonderful bottle of red wine, Gustavo Tres. We declined the dessert and he was a little dissappointed, but otherwise the meal was wonderful and we were seated promptly for a Friday night. Pros: Good Food, Nice Atmosphere more

Great overall! 12/16/2004

After several visits to Zula, I am truly impressed with its versatility and quality as a restaurant. It is a great location for a date, dinner with a group of friends or a business lunch. Add to this the excellent food at a fair price, and you have a winner. Pros: Consistent, Versatile more

Fantastic Place! 3/27/2004

My husband I dined at Zula last evening for the 4th time. The food, especially the crab cakes, was fabulous. Service great!. We arrived 10 mins before closing and they still treated us courtesly and did not rush us. Pros: Food, Bar more

Only thing missing is the crowd. 7/28/2003

I visited Zula for the second time this past weekend. My girlfriend and I had a martini at the stylish bar before heading to the dining room. Since there wasn't much of a crowd that evening, there was no wait for a table. My girlfriend started with the salmon/tuna tartare and I had the beef carpaccio with goat cheese, artichokes and tomatoes. Both were as as pleasing to the mouth as they were to the eye. Then, for the entree, she had the Sante Fe seasoned lamb chops and I went with the server's recommendation and tried the South Texas pork chop over smoked gouda grits. The portions were quite large, but I savored every bite. The wine selection was abundant and fairly reasonably priced. Our server also suggested a Pinot that matched our food woderfully. The music was as upbeat as the service and we will definitely return. Pros: friendly staff, great music, succulent tuna Cons: parking more

The Kid can cook!!! 7/15/2003

My family and many of my friends freqent Zula. We are working our way down the menu. Lance Fegen, owner chef, has even shared some of the recipes with myself and my friends. Service is always tops and the Zula blues rock. Maybe someday Zula will franchise.....keep up the good food......recently dined with 9 girls from the my office...the boss was very very impressed.. Pros: beautiful colors, great music, very resonably prices more

Top Notch All the Way! 7/11/2003

I don't know how anyone could not like Zula's. I've never had a rude server. In fact, I think the servers have always been personable and very helpful. (Maybe some people are never happy). Yes, the decor is great, but don't get caught up in that and forget about what you're eating. The venison and Cajun spoon bread is terrific. Our friends loved the Salmon-Tuna Tartar. If you're not a tartar fan, you'll love the crab cakes -- the best in town! We have introduced several of our friends to Zula's and they always want to go back. Pros: Location, Best Cuisine, Fun more

Killer dessert! 7/10/2003

Ate at Zula with my girlfriend on Thursday nite. A little pricey, but my lamb chops were pretty good and she said the tuna was amazing. We were thinking of getting two desserts but the waiter said the banana funnel cake was big enough to share. It was awesome. Cool music mix, not too stuffy. Pros: Good date place, Good service, Nice music mix Cons: Pricey more

What's not to love???? 7/7/2003

My wife and I have been dining at Zula since we moved to Houston from Chicago. The first time we were greeted we knew we were in for a treat as soon as we slipped into one of their funky booths. I felt bad taking such a big table just for two but the manager insisted there are no small tables here. We dined again for the umpteenth time last Saturday and as usual the staff went out of their way to make us feel special. My wife ordered the foie grois with peaches and the owner dropped off a muscat to compliment it. I still think they have the best damn crabcake in town. Zula was there for the rebirth of downtown and as trendy as she looks, this baby's got legs. We live in the Rice Lofts and love to eat downtown, so we'll be back. Pros: Great service, Wild decor, Great chef Cons: Expensive, Closed Sundays more

Tasty!!! 6/6/2003

If you enjoy dining out, you don't want to miss this gem in the heart of downtown! Great wine menu and knowledgeable waitstaff. They were able to direct us to exactly what we were looking for to accompany our meal. Wish I had tried Zula sooner. I'll be back! Pros: great decor/ trendy, great menu selection, friendly staff more

Small Portions, Bad Service 3/17/2003

I went here on a Sat. night. We were sat then we waited 10 min. for our waiter to acknowledge us. Our wine glasses were constantly empty, and the waiter did not put our chardonay on ice. What really pissed me off was that there was a floor manager, and he didn't fill our glasses, or offer to put the wine on ice, since our waiter was in idiot. When we said no thx to dessert, the waiter said""oh, your just going to have the wine, huh). As if spending over a hundred dollars so far wasn't enough. Food was small and subpar. I expect good food for 31 bucks a plate. Also, I'm in my 20's and everyone in the restaurant was 40+ years older. Maybe that's why I got bad service, who knows. Don't waste your time...go to Ruggles or Boulevard Bistro instead. Cons: Bad service, bland crowd, expensive more

eye popping interior! 2/4/2003

The first thing you'll notice is the las vegas inspired interior.. its very colorful!! The food was pretty good as well.. I had the steak with seared foie gras on top with the decadent chocolate cake for dessert.. more

A newfound treasure in downtown Houston 12/18/2002

Wow. I've been hearing about Zula for quite sometime and finally caught a bite to eat there for lunch several weeks back. Had to return for dinner with my wife this past weekend. If you haven't seen the beautifully unique design of Zula, your'e in for a treat. Neon colors, mirrors, and immense booths addorn this Vegas-like setting. The food was over the top..some mentionables are the salmon and tuna tar tar, beef carpaccio, the Colorado Lamb chops and the striped bass with a black truffle butter risotto. Superb. The service was delightful and only added to our this romantic dinner. Definitely recommend this restaurant...a bit pricey, but not in comparison with other establishments if its caliber. Zula is a true jewel in a city full of eateries. Pros: great decor, succulent meals, great wine list Cons: a bit pricey more

Chef Fegen for President! 11/2/2002

Zula is truly a delight! This is not your fathers restaurant. Your arrival (valet at the door) will find the most architecturally interesting restaurant you may have ever encountered in Houston. The restaurant is imaginatively designed in an art deco/ renaissance flare. The service is impeccable. Your date will be seated by attentive staff...the menu will be described to your exact satisfaction. At least a 1/2 dozen staff will wait on you before the night ends. Chef Fegen is the most creative culinary genius in the city. His (special order-call ahead) Quail Cacciatore is the finest meal I've ever consumed. His sauces and polenta fusions are remarkable. The appetizers and deserts are a smorgasbord of creative designs and flavors. The wine list is thoughtful...All the cool kids are there...Zula is the best restaurant in Houston. Enjoy! Pros: Imaginative Menu, Attentive Wait Staff, Great Wine List more

WoW! 10/10/2002

We went to Zula for a girls night out. It was fantastic. I have been to many downtown hot spots and have NEVER received service like we did at Zula. From the moment we arrived the staff was friendly and the service superb. The decore is gorgeous, the wine list extensive and the food...yum! I recommend the sea scallops followed by the apple crumble. I can't wait for my next trip to Zula. Pros: Service, Decore, Overall ambiance Cons: pricey more

Grrrreat! 8/9/2002

Great food...and good people! The guys at Zula take good care of their guests and look after every detail. I was impressed with the service. We went there with friends from NYC and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Zula helped me prove that Houston is far superior to some other places in the US when it comes to dining. more
