A true Restaurant/ bar and lounge experience 4/18/2008

I have been to several places that claim to be "" best club/restaurant"" but after visitng Zula Restaurant and Lounge , they were simply upscale fine dining restaurant and night club. Pros: Good food, exceptional service and Beautiful bartenders more

AT LEAST THE SALAD WAS GOOD 3/16/2008

I went to a birthday dinner with a group of frineds on a Saturday night. The service was horrible and it was only our group of about 16 people and I looked around and maybe 3 other tables had people. When I was seated I ask for a glass of water with lemon. I did not get my lemon until I reminded my server two additonal times. The prices were relatively ok for a 4 or 5 star restaurant. The unfortunate part was that the food was not a 4 or 5 star quality. It took about 30 minutes to receive my food after my salad. I ordered the Trout with lump crab meat I substituted mash potatoes instead of veggies. After receiving my food it was luke warm and for the first couple of minutes I had to search for my potatoes. Guess where I found them. Under my fish....go figure. The only good thing was the guy that served the water kept my glass full. Pros: The ambience and decor was fabolous Cons: Everything more

Incredible, gourmet dinner at very reasonable prices! 2/8/2008

Zula's has the absolute best Veal Chops encrusted with brown sugar and a gorgonzola bread pudding to die for! My husband was afraid i was taking him out to a very expensive restaurant because the decor is extremely upscale and chic! However he was pleasantly surprised to enjoy his turf and surf beef tenderloin fish and risotto perfectly prepared without breaking our dining out budget. The atmosphere is very romantic and service friendly and attentive. We have found our new downtown date spot! Pros: Romantic Fine Dining at it's best and reasonable prices more

Great choice for lunch downtown 2/7/2008

If you're looking for a good place to take clients for an impressive lunch, Zula is definitely a great choice. The crab cake sandwich is to die for. My colleague had the flat chicken and macaroni and couldn't stop raving about it. The creme brulee was one of the best I've ever had. Zula is most definitely a top pick for downtown dining. Pros: Atmosphere, food, location more

Awesome 11/27/2007

Zula was very helpful and attentive in hosting my boyfriend's birthday dinner party of 20. Their service is exceptional. They definitely aim to please and make an impression. The food is delicious and reasonable for the quality. Their menu has steak, seafood, salads, great desserts like creme brulee. The restaurant is so sleek, modern and classy. Music was contemporary. Just go and check it out. I know you'll have a pleasant experience. I can't explain how happy I am with how the dinner turned out. I loved the atmosphere, the music, the food and the waiters were really sweet and understanding. All the guests, especially my boyfriend, thought it was a great restaurant as well. Zula is amazing! more

My Favorite Restaurant 11/12/2007

Zula restaurant is my favorite restaurant in town. Its got a downtown feel but the food is purely 5-star. The menu is creative and everything is prepared elegantly. I take all of my out of town friends here because it embodies the true spirit of Houston dining. Spectacular food presented creatively in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. Don't miss it. Pros: The food, The food, The food more

BEST ROMANTIC RESTAURANT 11/7/2007

Zula Restaurant is probably the best romantic restaurant I've been to. They have good music playing. The tables are covered with white, cotton cloth. The market price fish and steak we had was superb! My husband and I visited Zula for the first time and Wow! we went to the d'town location and it was absolutly WONDERFUL. The service was AWESOME and we had a great time. Our children gave us a gift card to go back because we talked about the place for a week. I think our friends got sick of us. But when they visit Pros: GREAT SERVICE, AWESOME FOOD, BEAUTIFUL DECOR Cons: PARKING more

Awesome Restaurant- 11/6/2007

I took my company staff to dinner here a few weeks ago. We all had the most amazing filets ever! I love filet and I love going to different steakhouse in Houston to try them. This is now my top list of favorites. The service was outstanding and the restaurant itself was very welcoming and cozy. Our waiter recommended a delicious dessert to finish off our excellent dinner. It was a great dining experience. Pros: Amazing food. Great space design, Excellent service. more

High Class Elegance 11/6/2007

I really enjoyed this restaurant. The staff was very attentive but not overly looming. Refer to you as Mr. and Mrs.- Old school courtesy that is much appreciated! The decor was wonderful- Elegance Las Vegas style with modern touches. Great lounge/bar areas. Steak is perfect and side dishes are good. Loved the ambiance and boys boys feel even though as a woman. I felt more than welcome. Clientele was upscale, lots of business dinners and couples. A really nice getaway from the chaos of most Houston Downtown eateries. Overall, I would recommend Zula to anyone!!! Pros: Ambiance, perfect service, excellent food. more

So bad it was laughable 8/13/2007

This was by far the worst retaurant experience I have ever had in Houston. The waiter said that he didn't recommend the rib appetizer because it was ""not fresh."" We should have left then. Then the wine we wanted wasn't available. Then the crab cakes were fried really bad and seemed like they came out of a frozen box. Then the shrimp diablo was smoothered in this really really awful sauce that was entirely too overpowering. Then they brought out a ceasar salad that was literally two bites. When we complained to the waiter that the $7 salad was two bites he himself conceded that the kitchen must have been playing a ""really bad joke."" So we sent a SALAD back for the very first time in our lives. The tomato salad was also drenched in this horrible too sweet balasamic sauce with a very thick consistency. Then the filet was covered in A1 sauce - we even verified this with the waiter that it was in fact A1 sauce. There was so much A1 sauce that it covered the mashed potatoes as well. The macaroni was actually penne covered in this cheese with a very funky texture and a weird bite. The waiter felt bad that the food was so horrible that he comped our dessert which was actually just a cheescake from Costco with some tasteless whip cream, strawberry sauce, and blueberries. We almost left after each course but decided it was so bad we had to see it through because we were laughing. The waiter asked at the end of the meal if we were coming back. I was not ashamed to blatantly tell him no. more

Big, overpriced disappointment 8/9/2007

I truly don't understand why this restaurant gets such great reviews, maybe I went on a bad night. This downtown restaurant was the biggest disappointment I've had in a long time. The service was average, the food was bland, and the meal was definitely not worth the $150 price tag. The sashimi appetizer was decent, the mozzarella salad tasted terrible, the steak was ok, but lacked flavor. I will never go back here. There are far too many consistently excellent restaurants in the downtown area (Bossa, Vin) to ever warrant a return to this one. Pros: did not wait for a table, nice decor Cons: Bland, overpriced food more

Why try something new when you have perfection at Zula! 7/27/2007

This is my first time writing a review BUT I had to do it! We have always loved Zula's for it's great food and superior service. We've celebrated special occasions there (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) and always left more than satisfied. They have the best wedge salad, crab cakes and veal chops I've ever had! We've made it a bi-weekly tradition to visit with friends for pre party drinks and appetizers. You can't beat the price, experience, quality or location. I realized how truly AMAZING this restaurant is when we tried the Glass Wall. We heard the old Chef/Owner had opened Glass Wall and I made reservations for my boyfriends birthday. It was nothing more than average! Too loud, the food was ""ok"" and the service started great but slowly went down hill. For all those who wrote a bad review about Zula's...I consider myself a foodie and I came to truly realize how fantastic the FOOD was at Zula's when I tried to venture out of my comfort zone. I won't make that mistake again! Plus, the bartender always remembers us when we come in and even our drinks! Pros: The important things...food and service Cons: dimly lit bathrooms more

Good Food but SAD that they don't really understand food 1/31/2007

SAD. I am not exactly sure how to rate this restaurant. The entree I chose was exceptional. The steak was cooked to perfection and the risotto was amazing. The service was not good ... I suspect because they got overwhelmed with walk ins. In my book, that is no excuse. My waiter said that my first glass of wine was on him because of the wait and when my bill came it was still there. I am a foodie ... I love food and anyone who loves food knows that where food comes from makes all the difference in the world. I have one important question I ask every restaurant ... I did not ask this question tonight because I could not get any one to even talk to me so I ordered quickly. My question is ""where is the salmon from?"" The bad answer is that it is farm raised or if the waiter doesn't even know. I asked at the end of meal out of curiosity. To my astonishment -- astonished because this is not a cheap restaurant and presumably the chefs are well trained was that indeed it was farm raised. This is a really bad answer because to me it screams this chef does not understand food. Farm raised salmon is artificially colored ... you actually get to choose your color. How sick is that? I then had the opportunity to speak to one of the chefs who came out to the bar where I was sitting. I asked him about the salmon and he said ""we cannot afford to offer any other kind of salmon."" My response was not kind. At $31 an entree that answer is just garbage. The rest of the conversation was very disappointing. There was a clear indication that high quality food did not come first -- the bottom line did. Now, of course, I understand as a business person that all businesses want to stay in business. However, PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK. The web site for this restaurant claims a seasonal fresh menu and then serves artificially colored fish. WOW -- total disconnect. And then to talk to a chef who clearly did not understand this -- SAD. I won't be back and you shouldn't go. more

Excellent food but very expensive 11/14/2006

I have been to Zula's a few times now and have always had a great meal. I usually go with a few others and we do have a few drinks with our meals so we always end up paying more than $100 per person. The atmosphere, service and food is quite excellent but expect to pay a good penny for everything. Pros: Excellent Food & Service Cons: Expensive more

best tuna 11/2/2006
