I went here on a Sat. night. We were sat then we waited 10 min. for our waiter to acknowledge us. Our wine glasses were constantly empty, and the waiter did not put our chardonay ...

Overpriced Food in a 1980's cerack den. 9/23/2006

My colleague and I were seated promptly. We both know what the other person was thinking right away - the decor in this place is wacky. If I did cerack in the 1980's, I would have totally done it here. It also reminded me of Beetlejuice. The food tries to be foo foo haute cuisine, but wasn't. The food was ok, but given the price, not really a value. The evening's hilarity was stepped up a notch when I went to the restroom. It was practically pitch black with only a faint glow for lighting. The toilet was black. I hope my aim was good, I really do. Then came dessert - a root beer float with rum. A little too much rum. The thing was a mess, and felt like a frothy fireball going down. In short, this place is THE place to be...on Halloween. Pros: Wacky decor is reminiscent of Beetlejuice. Great conversation starter. Cons: Food tries to be foo foo haute cuisine, but flops hilariously. more

Better places in Houston 6/20/2006

Zula, at best, is average. But for a city like Houston, which has so many really good restaurants, I would go somewhere else. I would describe the food as ""blah"" and the menu overpriced. I like to try a lot of different restaurants, and I would say that I won't try this one again. Pros: Location Cons: food, service more

Still the Best 6/3/2006

After several visits to Zula, I am truly impressed with its versatility and quality as a restaurant. It is a great location for a date, dinner with a group of friends, or a business lunch. Add to this the excellent food at a fair price... Still my best and favorite restaurant in the whole Houston. Pros: business, roamantic, special occasions more

By Far the best restaurant in Downtown 6/2/2006

We were glad that we came to Zula for our anniversary dinner. We never have seen a steak delivered any way other than ordered- Each one is evenly grilled and perfectly colored. The staff consistently deliver outstanding services with ambiance out weighing the vast majority of competitors. By far the best restaurant in Downtown. We will sure to come back for more. Pros: Great atmosphere, service, veal steak more

Consistently spectacular 6/2/2006

I have been to Zula on serveral occasions. The crab cake is one of the best I ever had large crab lump unlike any other restaurants. Some review noted high priced ( $100.00 for dinner of two) That's insane. This is a fine dinning establishment !!! my Veal chop was awesome and my husband Tuna which was just amazing, The services was excellent. I had a feast and enjoyed it all. If your expectation are WHATABURGER style and you're disappointed, I appologize, It's simply a hightly recommended restaurant. Hint: Leave the little ones at home. Nothing worse than being on a romatic date at a romantic restaurant than to have some youngster screaming thier head off next to you. Pros: steak so juicy , seafood are the best , great services Cons: valet parking more

Wonderful Restaurant 6/2/2006

My boss told me at the very last minute ( 10 minutes before 5PM on a Wednesday) that he would needs to find a restaurant to hold a meeting for 55 people , must be private and fine dinning, I called around and ... no luck, called my boyfriend, he said to call Zula restaurant in Downtown , I did , spoke to the manager at Zula, they booked me in right away, I went a head and booked a private room for my boss, with four course meals and wines, the very next morning, saw my boss with a big smile on his face, asked him about Zula, he said could not be more pleased with the food and services. Thanks to all the Staff at Zula, may be I will get a raise just for this. Pros: promp services, good food, beautiful Cons: none more

My favorite Restaurant ever!!! 6/2/2006

Went to Zula for lunch, we were on budget and do not want to spend too much on lunch. The restaurant look very expensive, but since we heard so much good thing about Zula , we went in anyway and asked to look at the menu. To our supprise , the price is very reasonable for a fine dinning restaurant in downtown ( or anywhere in the city). Our total bill for the two of us at Zula came out about $30.00. We love the food, the ambience, the services and of course, the PRICE. Awsome ! Guess we found our favorite restaurant after all. Pros: good food , good services , clean and beautiful Cons: none more

best spot to held any event 5/30/2006

We went to Zula for our company 15 yrs anniversary. The restaurant is awsome. It's so elegant and it reminded me of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The menu is varied and contains menu items that pleased most everyone of us. The Salad contain a mix of spring greens although the main ingredients range from grilled chicken to shrimp to steak. The seafood are fresh and the steaks are big and juicy. The food are so good, enough for us to be hooked. It was a wonderful dinner at Zula and we are looking to book our X-mas company party at Zula again sometime in December of 2006 and this time will be more than 150 people. Thanks to all the staff at Zula and the Chef, Jason, of course. We sure will be back for more . Pros: large portion, fresh food, not too expensive more

I will NEVER come back!! 5/16/2006

We came in during lunch to celebrate a graduation, and it was empty. The service was slow, the food was salty, and the waiter was kinda dumb. When it was time to pay the bill, they tell us our credit card wasn't working. We go thru 4 different ones for about 40 minutes. They tell us their machine was broken earlier but now its fixed; so it must be ALL our cards. The waiter said we have to pay in cash, and he is in charge. However, we realize the owner is standing right there. Unfortunately the owner is just as incompetent as the waiter. She yells at us saying ""well what do you want me to do?"" So we just have to leave our information with her and get out of there. This ruined our graduation lunch and I hope no one else has to experience this terrible restaurant!!!!!!!! Pros: not one!! Cons: the food, the owner, the service more

Great Place 5/9/2006

There is a new executive chef at Zula and he is doing some great things with this menu. There are mainstays like the bb shrimp appetiser, daily fish special, terderloin filet, but there are new things like the awesome lucnh fish tacos. There is a new appetizer of tenderloin tamales that is fantastic. If it has been awhile since you have been here I highly recommend going back and cheking it out again. The food is simply great. Pros: GREAT food, great menu, food prep Cons: parking more

It's prom night 5/8/2006

Saturday night 7:30PM. $100.00 for 2 entrees, 2 martinis. Took wife here for anniversary. I felt like I was on a cruise ship departing Lake Charles and the theme was Prom Night! - Jazz it up! My bad for coming here in May. Prom goers filled two large tables. Most other tables were vacant. It was dark, cold, empty, too quiet. Skyy Martini Up w/ olive was very dirty. Ordered lamb chops and fish. Both dishes were tasty but so is a Whataburger. I made sure not to order appetizers, salad, or dessert. Call me cheap but I just wanted to bail out quickly, as I was crashing and burning. It was Landrys with lipstick. Im certain the prom girls had a magical night and were impressed by their trendy dates. As for me, I owe my old lady a proper anniversary dinner. Pros: my waiter Cons: ambience, cheese-factor more

You are never going to please everyone 2/20/2006

You are never going to please everyone who walks into your establishment. Cons: falsely information more

A Good Valanetines 2/17/2006

My husband and I went to Zula on Feb. 14th, 2006 , we were so impress with the food and service, The restaurant is so beautiful and very nice decor. The steak was juicy and so tender, and the price is very reasonable for the size of the steak . Pros: excellent food, Excellent services more

V-Day 2/16/2006

I had a very good meal on Tuesday. The chocolate cake for dessert was super rich but great. Our waiter recommended a good wine to go with our meal. The service was a bit slow, but it was valentines day. more

Gone Downhill 2/14/2006

Since the change of ownership and the departure of Chef Lance it has been a steep downhill slide. The once famous ""jumbo lump"" crabcake lacked the ""lump', he bisque was bitter, the lamb tough and the tartlett tasteless. I would have been better off going over a couple of blocks to Frank's pizza and saved $200. more
