Too bad. 12/14/2007

I recently sent my girlfriend and her friend for an all day, all expense paid visit to the spa. As I gave my credit card info., to set up the reservation, I made sure to mention that this was a gift and that I wanted these ladies burdened with nothing. So I was a bit dismayed when I recieved a call from my girlfriend to tell me that she was asked by the woman at the desk "How she would like to pay for this?"...Obviously, this put her, as well as myself in a very awkward position. I was then handed over to the woman at the desk to again give my credit card info.In asking me if she should give the ladies the invoice to give to me, she proved that she does not know that you don't give a receipt with a gift. I was also asked at this point, what amount in gratuity I would like to leave for the services. WHAT?....Why wasn't I told by the woman who made the reservations about gratuity? All in all, the ladies did have a splendid time. However, for $980.00 all I was given was aggravation and disappointment. more

Customer service came through! 10/25/2007

I previously went to the Gene Juarez at Northgate, which is closer to where I live, and had a bad haircut experience with a newer stylist. I felt so awful about the cut, but I decided that I should just call Gene Juarez to let them know about my experience. The girl i spoke to was so great, and offered a certificate to have a re-cut or a cut done in the future. After explaining that I didnt want to go back to the same location, she was helpful in pointing me towards the downtown location. A short while later I recieved my cerificate in the mail, and they included the cards if some of the top stylists at the downtown location, which I thought was so helpful. So, once my hair grew out a bit I went down there to get a cut and color, and a wedding updo consulation (getting married in early spring!)... I have to say that they made me feel like an absolute princess!!! I was brought round after round of tea, magazines, etc. There was never a dull momonet with all the attention I got. They were SO friendly, and they really listened to what I asked for, and my hair turned out beautifully:) I highly recommend the downtown store! more

Horrible Service! 10/19/2007

HORRIBLE SERVICE! I had a horrible experience here with Valerie as my stylist. She was extremely cold and snobby and when I asked her to do a simple style that they were more than happy to do at the Advanced Training Salon and took all of about 3 min. she responded with "They have more time to play with your hair at the academy" and wouldn't do it! I wouldn't pay $20 for my experience here, much less $70! Valerie doesn't really understand that part of being a stylist is being nice to your clients and making them feel comfortable. Also, the haircut was mediocre. more

I go to the salon to be pampered, not to argue 10/10/2007

Some of the staff here is great (Colin and Jordan especially). Unfortunately, my last visit was so frustrating I won't be setting foot in this salon again. I had a new stylist, and was appalled at her attitude. She was completely dismissive of my idea (though I'd had the same style before), and refused to make any suggestions. She just threw a Vogue at me and told me to look at pictures of actresses. I go a salon like Gene Juarez for the experience and training, assuming the stylist will be able to rely on that background to help adapt my ideas to my look. I do not go to the salon to argue with a stylist with too much attitude. more

Horrible! 6/5/2007

I have been a loyal customer for years - no more! Trying to get in is impossible and you are treated as though they're doing you a favor! The people who are the stylists/spa people (Valerie and Heidi are AMAZING) but wayyyy too much hassle to get in and try and get an appointment. Now that Seattle has so many other spas there are options and this is definitely off my list now. I hope others follow suit. I am curious how this has a 5-star on CitySearch when so many reviews are showing 1 or 2 stars?? Pros: Valerie and Heidi Cons: Too difficult to get in; phone staff and receptionists are snobby and rude more

Collin Taylor will give you the best haircut you have ever had 3/21/2007

There are lots of negative reveiws here for hair stylists, but I hope that some of you will give Collin at downtown a chance. He is the best hair stylist I have ever seen. He is attentive, fun, outgoing, and truly talented. I had seen other stylists at GJ before and was not very impressed so I made an appointment in 2003 and had the receptionist book a stylist randomly. I met Collin that year and have never seen any one else again. He is very up to date on current hair trends and listens to what I want and finds a way to mix who I am in with what is stylish. He is truly gifted. I promise you if you see Collin you will become a regular and you will always leave feeling fabulous! I love, love, love him!!! Pros: Collin Taylor, great energy, products more

Horrid job!! 1/22/2007

I have given this place three chances with three different hairstylists, because my friend works at one on the east coast, and all three times were horrid!! The first time they cut my hair so it was shorter underneath so it fell like a big fish bowl, the second time the stylist argued with me about what I wanted (my usual), and then did it her way! All three times they were rude and acted like they were far superior, and tried relentlessly to get me to buy a lot of products after I was done. I appreciate opinion, but no thank you means no. I'm a timid person so I don't know why they were being so mean. Cons: Bad at haircuts!!! more

Renee is the best! 11/9/2006

There are quite a few bad reiviews on here and I can't say that I disagree with all of them but if you want a great cut then you should see Renee. She's really sweet and does a great job. I don't like the way she styles my hair but when I get home and style it myself I can see how good it is. She listens to what I want and will also tell me not to do certain things because it won't work with my hair/face. more

Impossible to get in 8/5/2006

I tried to schedule a manicure/pedicture on Thu for the weekend - they had no appointments Fri, Sat or Sunday. While it's a busy weekend, I'm only in town for 5 days, and it doesn't help me any to come next week. Plus the receptionist was a snob. more

One of the best in Seattle 7/5/2006

Pricey but worth it. I suggest having a consultation with your stylist before you let them cut or color your hair. There are lots of great stylists to choose from. I usually go with the advanced sytlists. This location is centrally located (you can park at Pacific Place and walk over). This salon has been an icon in Seattle for years. At one time the salon was actually located in Nordstrom. Pros: Good Results Cons: A little pricey more

Spa nice but hair service is...less than okay. 6/3/2006

I love going to GJ for massages, and have quit going there for any hair services. The colorists are terrible. I feel like they make everyone look the same, despite your request. Once, after having my hair colored, the colorist admitted "There is nothing natural about the color of your hair." It was a brown blob. The hair cuts have mostly been bad. I generally got a basic bob trim, and once the lady made my hair look so bad...she had to shave around my neck because she cut it too short. Nobody has been rude to me, but the hair care staff are flat out mediocre....who settles for that? Pros: massages, facials Cons: hair care, hair cuts, hair color more

Average experience 4/14/2006

I've gone here for cut and color services for over a year but had to come in a second time right after a color service to do a 'fix' a couple times...it was usually because the color didn't stay on my hair after one wash; or it looked like they didn't touched the roots at all which is the purpose of a root touchup. If it's not too light on color it's too dark. Typically I walk out of the salon with color 3x as dark as I wanted it but after 4 to 5 weeks it looks the way I asked for...just in time for another color service and I have to start all over again. Counter staff is snooty but the stylists are very nice. However, I usually get passed around to 3 different people, someone to wash, color and blow dry/style...makes it hard to figure the tip. Pros: location, friendly stylists Cons: color product, counter staff, tip 3 people? more

Great Haircut!! 3/19/2006

I have not had the best luck with haircuts. So I walked into the Downtown Seattle Gene Juarez and asked for an appt. with a lower priced artist. I was shocked that I was able to walk in and get an appt. but even after that I loved who they put me with. The stylist name was Monroe she was so helpful and let me know what would look good on me to help me look younger. She also was a very good listener (I m very particular). Overall it was a great experience I love my hair and already booked out my next appt. Pros: Walk in ability , Great atmosphere, Very educated Cons: Parking isn't paid more

The Best Day! 2/25/2006

I decided to go to the downtown spa for my day of beauty. I got to the check in desk and was greeted by one of the nicest people I have meet in a long time, her name was Javi, she was so kind and courteous. She made me feel really welcome. Because of her it warmed me over and gave me a great first impression that lasted the entire day After she checked me in she escorted me to the Spa, which had an entirely different feel, very calm and relaxing. From that point on I was treated to one luxury after another. So, my thanks to Javi at the front desk, Lindsay my massage therapist, Saida, who did my faicial, Mica for the the manicure and pedicure and the wonderful lunch and everyone else who made my day special thank you very much. Pros: Large Spa, Kind employees, Great Tea Cons: Pay for parking more

The Best Stylist: Collin Taylor 2/20/2006

I have been to salons all over Seattle, and the East Coast. It wasn't until I had my hair cut by Collin Taylor, that I finally became loyal to one stylist. He was funny, intelligent, creative and professional. I sat down in his chair, bored with my style and not knowing what I wanted. He took every aspect of who I was into consideration and created a high fashion masterpiece! I left there feeling like a classy runway model. If you EVER go to Gene Juarez Salon in Downtown Seattle, WA - Be sure to book with Collin, you will not only leave with a new level of self confidence and an incredible styist, but a good friend also. Pros: Front Desk Staff, Plentiful Parking, Fabulous Energy Cons: Collin Doesn't Come, In A Travel Size!, Gloomy Seattle more

Great experience 1/28/2006

Was looking for a new style. My stylist was very helpful in making suggestions and giving me ways to deal with it while it was growing out. Colorist was also excellent. My 24-year old daughter had another stylist who was also excellent -- as good as she said she found in NYC. more

NEVER AGAIN 9/10/2005

The overall experience was a disaster. From running WAY late...to getting a haircut and color i could have gotten at Hair Masters. I was recommended this salon from a downtown hotel...obviously these people do not care or need to work in so many people to afford the space. The salon looks great...but dont read a book by its cover... Be warned. Pros: Beautiful Space Cons: Parking, Ability, AIR HEAD STYLISTS more

Collin @ the Downtown GJ Is The Best 8/14/2005

I don't believe in supporting corporate salons like Gene Juarez and frankly I am not impressed with their ugly salon decor, product pricing and selection, or the overall "salon" experience they offer. However, I was referred to Colin at the downtown location and I think he is the best hairdresser in Seattle. I had almost given up on GJ until I found him. He is very intelligent, well educated on current hair trends, charming, and has an artistic eye for detail. In short, he's a great hairdresser. I highly recommend him and GJ should recognize they've got a very talented employee working for them. I've spent four years looking for a great hairdresser in Seattle and luckily I found Colin. Book an appointment with him. more

User review by lovlydarcy 4/28/2005

They ruined my hair, were rude to me, would not fix my hair properly and belittled my intelligence and concern for my hair and threatned to ban me from all gene juarez salons. I was a loyal customer for over 6 years and will never ever step foot in one of the locations again. the only like you when you are handing them money and not saying anything, I called corporate and was basically told to take a flying leap. more

Wow, what a waste! 3/16/2005

My husband and I have given the Downtown salon a total of 6 chances with 3 stylists, and was only pleased the first visit. I have NEVER had a stylist that has listened to what I actually wanted - for example, I told the stylist that I wear a headset all day at work, so I want my hair SHORT (above the ears) - what I got was almost to my jaw, and was told "you can tuck it behind your ears" The second time, I had to refuse to get out of the chair until I got enough cut off. Even worse, my calm and constructive letter to corporate was never answered. Go figure...... and go elsewhere Pros: downtown Cons: they suck more

  • In Short
The front desk and the urban, brighly lit salon have a fitting air of sophisticated chaos. However, there's a quick escape: the tranquil, feng shui-adapted waiting room. There, after changing into spa clothes and a luxurious robe, spa-goers are treated to an aromatic foot soak by the spa hostess. Services include the standards--facials, body-wraps, manicures, massages, mud masques--and more.
