gone downhill 1/18/2012

I've been coming here on a regular basis for over a year, and I feel like service has recently become inconsistent and gone downhill. My most recent experience was awful, and the two visits before a little sketchy. It is a school, and therefore a learning environment, but the instructors lately seem spread thin with too many students and aren't able to give the inexperienced stylists the attention and guidance they need. This is starting to get a little scary when they are hovering over you with hot styling tools, chemicals, and scissors. In the past I've never been concerned about the experience level of the students because the instructors have always been close by, but this has really changed. I'm so disappointed because I love the environment, love the Aveda products, and I used to think this was a great way to save money while being a really fun experience to have a student learn by cutting my hair (it's long and grows back quickly.) Six months ago I would have given it five stars and recommended it to everyone, but I'm not sure now if I'll even be back. I did write a detailed survey, and know a couple other friends who I've referred in the past and now feel the same way as me, so hopefully Aveda will heed the advice of their clients and fix their problems. more

Like the end result 1/16/2012

The experience this time better then last. I had a new stylist and she did a great job. I didn't how ever like how the instructor came and took over the haircut. I told the stylist what i wanted and she was doing it then the instructor came and changed it. I know they were trying to help but my hair ended up alot shorter and WAY more thinner than i wanted. My hair was down to my waist and thick now it to my shoulders and thin as a rat tail. more

Very Disappointed with my visit 1/15/2012

Let me start by saying that I have been a client of the institute for a year now. I was so excited to be there to be getting my hair highlighted a haircut. After 7 hours 35 minutes, crying, paying full price I left the building. I will be calling a manager on Tuesday if I am not contacted first. I am very disappointed with the lack of instruction to my stylist. I do not want to see this instructor go with action. He didn't even have the guts to come and talk with me after he knew I was upset. Thank goodness that another instructor stepped in. Without her I would not have ever returned. One of the best hair salons in Austin 1/15/2012

Not only are the prices amazing for the services that are provided (free hand, face, and shoulder massage, with shampoo and conditioner all with Aveda products) for a men's $15 haircut a great deal, but the salon itself is one of the largest and nicest in Austin with a full spa service. They also provide free herbal tea that is very relaxing. The students do a wonderful job. I have had 5 different students and all of them are at the top of their profession. The educators are always there to also help with any details during every haircut. more

Tourmaline facial 1/14/2012

The facial was nice but I expected better results, especially for the price. It cost just as much, of not more than a regular salon ($60)! The facial is described as Aveda's version of microdermabrasion but I honestly could not see any difference in my face when I got home. Still had tons of blackheads, whiteheads and uneven skin texture after I left. In my opinion my money would have been better spent going to a dermatologist and getting the real microdermabrasion treatment. more

best service 1/13/2012

I think hands down this was the best and fastest hair cut I have ever had at here. The instructors and my student were excellent. And I will definitely be back to see Paisley. Thank y'all so much more

Great Atmosphere 1/9/2012

Both my daughter & I had a wonderful experience with Kylie. The staff at the front desk were very professional when checking you in and out. Will, the instructor, is awesome as always. He provides professional guidance to the students and ensures a personal relationship with his students and guests. There is one change that I would recommend. The young lady with short blonde hair that was at the checkout stand on Saturday, January 7th @ 12 noon. Sorry I didn't catch her name. I find her to always be so unpolite, rude & doesn't make the guest feel welcomed. I also found it unprofessional that she would apply makeup from the makeup stand on the 1st floor before she went up stairs to work. And she was upset because my son was next to the trash bin and she had to walk 3ft away to throw her trash away. Definatley not Aveda material. If you keep her she really does need PR training. more

Excellent Service 1/9/2012

Every time I come in for service at the Aveda Institute the entire team is great. Check-in is easy and service is always prompt. Lacey and her instructor were both great and my hair looks and feels fantastic. I appreciate the time that the instructor took to work with my stylist and his suggestions for my hair. Great experience!!! more

Afraid to take risks. 1/8/2012

I've been here another time and had a great experience with getting my hair dyed dark (chocolate brown), but this time I asked to have my hair lightened to a honey blonde and was not very satisfied. I had asked for all-over color to lighten all of my hair without leaving any streaks, but they said that they weren't comfortable doing that since they would have to bleach my hair. I didn't understand why they were okay with highlighting half of my hair with bleach, but not all of it. I ended up having all-over micro-weave highlights (my appointment took five hours) and my hair came out only very slightly lighter with much of the brown still vsible. This was the most expensive lightening offered and it did not lighten my hair even nearly as much as I had asked for. I told the cosmetologist and her supervisor that the results were not what I had hoped for, but they offered no response other than to say that I would have to come back for highlights again. I do not feel that I should have to come back and in total pay four times as much to have the same result that I could have had with all-over color. more

not what I wanted 1/4/2012

I was really disappointed with the service this time. The service use to be pretty good but has gone downhill. I wanted my hair to be blonde. I showed the picture and the master instructor agreed that it could be done and look like the picture...a nice medium light blonde. When they get gone with me, my hair is brown, not blonde. I was very disappointed. I also had a facial done. The last time I had the 30 minute facial, it was amazing! This time I had an hour facial and the service was choppy and unprofessional. The 30 minute facial was better than the hour one. Positives: I enjoy Aveda products, massage. Negatives: students in training, service has gone way downhill from what it used to be. more

Usually great, just ok this time 1/4/2012

I have been at Aveda before, and usually the service and products are great, but this time it was just ok. I got a mani/pedi, and noticed some of the nailpolish layers to be a little thick, and the topcoat was so thick it was stringy and the student had to go through 3 kits to find a good one. I mentioned something to the students instructor and she said that some of the nailpolish colors are older and used a lot.... well, maybe they shouldnt be using them if theyre not in the best condition anymore? The quality of the products has always been great as well, not chipping and lasting a long time, but this time both my toes and hands already have nails that are chipped and its been less than 12 hours! Regardless, I will probably go again, and even though it is an Aveda Institute and not a regular salon, I still expect Aveda level quality! more

Returns or Exchanges on Product 1/3/2012

My stylist recommended a hair styling product that I had not used before. He told me (right in front of the checkout clerk) that if I tried it and did not like the results, I could bring it back during my next appointment and return it. I tried to exchange it for a product that I usually use...that I know works for my hair. And The Aveda Institute refused my exchange...I even tried to talk to the manager and director. They both claimed that they have a very strict return policy of 2 weeks. So, they should definitely be training their stylists to make us all aware of this STRICT policy. I ended up walking out with that product that I am never going to use. By the way, I recently moved to Austin and I have been going to Aveda salons and using Aveda products for years! I told them this, but they didn't care. Well...they lost a customer. In summary, be sure to think twice before buying Aveda product from the Aveda Institute in Austin. They obviously don't teach customer loyalty along with the service. They basically lost a loyal customer over a $22 bottle of hair styling gel. Really? On a positive note, I found Avant Salon downtown on 5th St...they use Aveda products and they have AMAZING service! Goodbye Aveda Institute...Hello Avant! :) more

Wonderful performance, disappointing price hike 12/31/2011

As I've been a patron here since a right after it opened, I was again pleased with the job done by my regular girl. However, Aveda Institute recently decided to increase their prices based on service and level of student. I understand this, I really do. I was startled to learn, however, that the cost of the exact service I have had done previously had about doubled. It was now comparable to a standard salon. Part of the appeal of attending the training facility is the lower price allowed for having a student perform the service. I was terribly disappointed in this and will have to reconsider any future appointments. more
