Cheap And Wonderful! 2/24/2009

Walked in and was a bit nervous that they only took men (despite what I saw on their website). Looks like a huge version of a hometown barber shop. Was greeted and sent to a stylist immediately, despite being a walk-in. Dee knew just what I wanted (even though I couldn't really describe it well), and my previously long hair is now wonderfully medium/short. She did such a great job! And for only $20! I definitely recommend this place!! Pros: Cheap, Great staff, quick, wonderful job! Cons: None! more

I work at a major magazine here in the City and I have nothing but great things to say about Rita at Astor Place Hair. Rita has worked with our magazine's top photographers and Directors on many publicity shoots, providing us the very best in hair and makeup. I also personally use Rita to keep me looking my very best since my position calls for my look to be ultra-trendy. Rita is an expert, a true artist in cuts, color, highlights and also in creating the very latest in styles and fashion. We send many of our models - men and women - to Rita to keep them on top of their game. Manhattan is very fashion conscious and demanding and we need our people to stand out and really catch the eye of our readers. We can use any stylist we choose, so the fact that Rita is our "Go To" hair and makeup artist speaks volumes about her work. Astor Place is lucky to have her because she is a real drawing card since she excels at everything under the sun. Beside her talent, she is sweet, upbeat and full of positive energy. i've been going to Astor Place every time i need a new look and also to retouch my roots. My stylist; Arumugam is really cool, he really listens while offering his own opinion. you'll love him, he's the one with the super gorgeous afro! Pros: you won't be disappointed Cons: can be pricey more

After living in New York for 2 years, I had gone to 3 or 4 different stylists. For the past year, I've settled on Jose. He does a great job and most importantly he does what you ask and is very consistent. Make sure you make an appointment! more

An extraordinary talent., Rita at Astor Place.. 2/17/2009

I have shopped around forever to find someone as talented as Rita! She has helped me out so much. Before I met Rita my hair looked lifeless and damaged, but she changed all that for me. Rita gave me healthy looking hair with a new style, great color and gorgeous highlights. I have never had a true professional stylist before, but God knows I've looked high and low. I have tried many stylists the past few years until I came across her based on the recommendations of two of my best friends. Rita allows me to express my opinions about how I'd like to look and understands me completely. What a pleasure to be appreciated that way. I always feel relaxed and comfortable in her chair and there is no question I will keep going back. I also have sent a few friends and clients to her and they all rave about her . Rita is our stylist of choice 2/15/2009

I would say easily half the girls in my office go to Astor Place just to see Rita cause she?s the best! Sometimes we even make appointments so a couple of us can go together, lol! Rita is just unbelievable at everything she does. We all say she's kind of magical even. Rita gives the coolest haircuts and her highlights are just unreal! Whatever you want she can do no problem. Show her a picture of any style you want and it's yours! She is cute, funny and cool. Rita keeps you happy at all times because she just loves making people beautiful. She is really smart and gives such great beauty tips for hair and skin between appointments. Everything she says is right on! I have complete confidence in her no matter what. I am going back to her again next week ? I can?t wait! You have to call first though, she is always busy, but totally worth the wait! Pros: Quick, easy, affordable, Rita! more

So I found myself in the neighborhood in need of a quick cut, I called my friend to ask him the name of his barber at Astor Place. He introduced me to him years ago (2001). Unfortunately, the call went right to voice-mail. I walked in, hoping to remember his name. Dead ahead as you walk in, is a big sign that reads his name, JAY. I walked up to him and introduced my self as Randy's friend. He said "Two girls, a beautiful wife, two motorcycles" he knew exactly who I was talking about. JAY shared he has been cutting his hair for years. He even remembered me, "you work with Randy in sales" Well some things have changed, but yes, I did work with Randy. If you are looking for a true professional, a staple of New York living, then please introduce yourself to JAY. He won't forget you! JAY has been written up in newspapers and books from around the world. He has been cutting hair for over 40 years. Just so you know, JAY is off all day Saturday and half the day on Friday (11 AM - 3 PM) He is taking vacation April 1st to April 19th, so plan ahead or visit his website at barberjay . com --THANK YOU JAY! Go see Sergio for the best haircuts 2/13/2009

For 5 years now I have used Sergio at Astor Place for nice mens haircut. He is just what I need to keep me looking good for work and for play. He has lots of talent, definitely a pro who is well trained. He is quick and precise and I will go to him always. No question about it , he's great and also inexpensive. Give him a try, please. more

Let's face it: the economy is a disaster and your hair is just going to grow back. Why pay high prices for a simple haircut? In these austere times, smart people visit Jose at Astor Place Hair. Jose consistently delivers the solid, no-nonsense trims I demand to look sharp. He cuts my hair just as I ask, and even with the generous tip he deserves, I leave Astor Place Hair with change from my $20 bill. What's not to like? more

The best in cuts and color from Rita at Astor! 2/8/2009

Since I have been going to Rita at Astor I have never, ever looked better. I look like I popped off the pages of Vanity Fair or Glamour Magazine! I am ecstatic about her talents and she has made me look and feel really special. Oh and my husband thanks her too, lol! She is elegant and graceful and has more confidence in her abilities than any stylist I've seen. She is a natural. Most stylists just start cutting without knowing have no personality at all. Rita was the total opposite, she really cares and respects her clients and is a pleasure to converse with. She observes, creates and then makes it all happen! She creates cute & trendy haircuts, rich base colors and she highlights like an artist on a canvas. I get complimented everywhere I go and I owe it all to her. If you go to Astor Place Hair for the first time make sure you ask for her, you will be so thrilled that you will never go to anyone else. She is very very popular and usually very busy, so please call first. She is affordable too in comparison to those chi chi salons uptown that rip you off time and time again. Varies on the stylist 2/8/2009

I think the quality of your cut here depends a LOT on the stylist. I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and was able to get my hair cut right away, but the stylist, Narcy, was not very good. She was listening to her iPod the entire time she cut my hair - granted, she only took about 5 minutes on the whole cut, which was extremely sloppy. I have very short hair and she cut it very poorly - I had to fix the back myself as soon as I got home because it was so uneven. She did ask me whether I wanted her to use scissors or a razor, which was nice, and the cut was only $17. I will probably go back to Astor Place Hair, but I will make sure not to have Narcy again, and I will also make the stylist show me the back of my head in the mirror so I can avoid a repeat of this incident. I think the bottom line is that you have to make sure to get a stylist you know is good, and you have to make sure the cut is good and not let them rush you out until you're happy with it. more

I had the best makeover ever with Rita. Rita is a true expert and she is incredibly talented with everything she does. I had the best makeover of my life and now I look my best and feel even better. I look 10-15 years younger and it is all thanks to Rita. I am now one of those people who everyone stops and stares. Rita gave me everything I wanted and more in a makeover. Love my new cut and highlights - Thank u Rita! 2/4/2009

Now I know why there is a big buzz about Rita at Astor Place. She is without a doubt the most brilliant stylist in the City and I have been to many! I go to Rita for everything - haircuts, color and even her "sunny highlights" that everyone raves about. Once you experience Rita's talents, no one else measures up to her ability! Rita always seems to know exactly how I want to look and she does it professionally and always with a big smile and class. She has even worked on many celebrities, but I know she gives all her clients star treatment whether they are famous or not. I always leave her chair looking and feeling great and I can't wait to show off my my new look to my friends and family. In fact quite a few of my friends from the office go to her as well. Do yourself a favor and go see Rita if you are looking for a Super stylist who is very affordable compared to most. She is talented, professional and a sweet person too. I will not let anyone else but Rita touch my hair ever again. I trust her implicitly. I will also be going to her for a full makeover and facial in the very near future. She does it all. The Best Place for Years 1/26/2009

I have been going to Astor Place Hair and it is the best place for many years. I have always chosen my stylist wisely (there are 100+) and always gotten what I wanted. Recently, I was in and had the best hair cut, color, highlights and facial (yes, this is a new service); I was very happy with the service and will be back as a loyal customer. The stylist did exactly what I asked her not to. My hair will take months to get back to normal. They may be ok for men, but do not go there if you are female. more
