I have lived in Manhattan for 32 years and have been to so many salons incl;uding Pierre Michel, Bumble & Bumble etc. and Mercedes gave me the best haircut and color I have EVER had. She is so nice too! The price is unbelievable!! more

Saw all the amazing reviews for Rita and was in a jam in need of finding someone to fix my two inch dark Brown roots before tomorrow as I had an important audition. Because of the short timing she was not able to due my hair, she called me though a day after I emailed her and advised me what mixture to use. Not only did she help solve my problem, but it was the blond color I have been telling colorist I've wanted for years they never have been able to do. I am super anal with my hair! Rita is fantastic! I had just had a nightmare experience with my last hairstylist and I also have thinning hair due to a medical condition so seeing a new hairstylist is always stressful. My friend recommended Rita so I dropped her an e-mail and she got back to me immediately. Right from the start she stressed how we were partners in deciding what to do with my hair and that my happiness was her main concern. Well, I was more than happy after my first cut with her, I was over the moon. She took my drab hair and gave me a totally modern crop cut that made my friends beg me to find out who was cutting my hair. My hair actually looks thicker and healthier than it has in years. Rita is a real a pro with years of experience and to top it off she is really sweet and savvy. Can't recommend her enough and the prices at Astor Place can't be beat. more

If you want a great haircut see Sal. He is a pro and has been doing it for a long time. He really knows his stuff and has a multitude of talents for all the various male hair styles. I have been going to him for haircuts for years and have always been more than pleased with the results. In this world of today's high prices Astor Place Hair Designers is more than reasonable. This is actually more of a review for Rita then for Astor Place Hair Designers. Rita is absolutely the best, and while I like Astor Place – great location and super low key – I really only go there to see Rita. I have been going to Rita for 3 years. Previously, I had lived in NYC for one year and never found a salon that I liked. After one bad experience in particular, I started researching and found Astor Place Hair Designers on Citysearch. Thank goodness for all of the amazing reviews for Rita, because I booked an appointment with her and I was ecstatic with the results! The positive reviews you see praising Rita are 100% accurate. She is incredibly talented, and such a nice person on top of that! More specifically, I go to Rita for highlights and trims. Rita uses a special method for highlights that I hadn’t seen anywhere else. Even with a full head of highlights, my hair remains soft, super shiny, and very strong. If you’ve ever had your hair highlighted and it felt like straw afterwards; it really doesn’t have to be that way! I also have thick, curly hair which had given other stylists trouble in the past – it takes longer to do the highlights and I’ve been told that it has to be cut in a special way to look right. If I hadn’t had bad experiences before, I would never have known that I have a difficult hair type, because Rita has it looking perfect every time I see her. What more can I say? Rita makes Astor Place Hair Designers. She’s the only one you should ask to see. more

This place is wonderful in general, but I must say without a doubt that Rita is truly the star stylist. She has been cutting my hair for three years and I will go nowhere else (once I tried getting by without her, to scary and upsetting results...). Not only does she give a killer trim, she's a wonderful person, always so positive and bubbly that you can't help but leave feeling totally empowered and fabulous. Jose is a great stylist at Astor Place Salon. I've been going to him for about three years now and have never left unhappy. He is attentive, patient and a perfectionist - which are all great things for a hair cut under $20! I went to Astor Place for the first time the other day and am so lucky I had the privilege of being in Mercedes hands. She is an amazing talent! She gave me the most sumptuous layers and everyone I know loves them! I used to pay upwards of $250 for my hair at expensive Salons on Newbury St. in Boston. Now I got to Aster Place because Mercedes can do a $250 haircut quality at a much more reasonable price. She also did an amazing job on my color..beautiful, blond, shiny, and healthy looking. My best friend and I were so excited to get an appointment with Rita. We both got make-overs; highlights,gloss ,haircuts, and our makeup done for the most amazing price! WE love our new looks! Rita is so Zen in her approach not only to life but to beauty. She makes you feel wonderful inside and out. We call her our Hairapist! She took my color to new heights and my hair is actually healthier than it was before I found her. My friend's hair looks so phenominal that we both get stopped on the street all the time and asked "Who does your hair?" Rita is the way to go in NYC-she's sweet, and gentle but with sass and style and the most incredible talent we've ever seen, and we're native NY'ers- so we know the deal.She will work with you for your best look, and as she says "We're a team". This is the first review I am writing on here, but my second time going to Astor Place Hair. I will start off by saying that I will never go anywheres else!!! For my second visit, I went to Mercedes! I got blonde highlights and an awesome cut, which she styled amazingly! She is so friendly, fun to talk to and most importantly is one amazing stylist! I will definitely be going back to her!! I would highly recommend going to Mercedes you will NOT be disappointed! more

This is my first time writing a review, and I'm doing it is because I love Rita! She deserves all the recognition she can get. About 3 years ago, I found out about her from multiple rave reviews on citysearch, and figured I'd give her a shot. She did not disappoint! She gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. 3 years later, I'm still a loyal client, and I've since recruited my boyfriend and some friends to start going to her, and they love her work as well. Most recently, I had an unsatisfactory keratin treatment at a different salon. I went to Rita to ask her what she thought I should do about my hair. She proceeded to give me a brazillian blowout, a glaze of a beautiful color, and a haircut for a VERY reasonable price, and I walked out of there feeling like she'd totally fixed me! Not only is Rita amazing at what she does, but she's a great person too. She's easy to talk to and I've always felt like we hit it off as if we've been friends for years. If you want to meet an awesome person, a great colorist, and a phenomenal haircutter, go to Rita. Seriously...you won't regret it. A friend of mine suggested that I got get my hair cut at Astor Place while I was visiting NYC, recommending it as cheap and a cool place to visit. My hair is very thick and curly, and I had some reservations about getting a cut from someone who'd never worked with it before. I shouldn't have worried. My stylist Mercedes took my very vague descriptions of what I wanted done, and chopped my mane into an adorable little pixy cut that I absolutely love. Mercedes is a talented stylist and a wonderfully engaging person. I walked out of Astor Place Hair Designers with a $20 dollar haircut that I adore and a new friend! A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME TO GO SEE RITA AFTERI COMPLAINED TO HER ABOUT THE LACK OF GOOD COLORIST IN NYC. WELL I WAS WRONG, I WAS USING THE WRONG HAIR STYLISTS. RITA IS AMAZING! MY COLOR IS WONDERFUL AND AS A BONUS I HAD A FACIAL THAT WAS UNBELIEVABLY HYDRATING. I ACTUALLY LOOKED YOUNGER AND IT WAS SO RELAXING. SHE ROCKS!!!! I can't say enough good things about this place and this experience - you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it, but i'm telling you - go looking for it - i read the citysearch reviews and thought - perhaps - but i went i have absolutely no regrets - my hair is a beautiful shade of light blonde and i love it! oh and by the way - it was AT LEAST 40.00 CHEAPER than every where else in the village. it is so rare to find such quality, such amazing professionalism and such a bargain all in one place. What can I say about Jose? After much disappointment from a dozen different haircutters in the Union Square/E Village area, I finally found Jose, who's been cutting my hair for 3+ years and counting. Jose is very attuned to your personal needs and wants regarding your hair, so you feel comfortable telling him exactly how you want your hair cut. He's extremely personable, and he cuts your hair in a very time-efficient manner without ever feeling like he's just trying to rush through it. I can't speak for the women whose hair he cuts (although I'm sure he does a stand-up job), but if you're a dude looking for a consistent, trust-worthy hair cutter who will make your hair exactly how you want it, look no further than José. Rita, will take her time, when cutting your hair. She will not rush you out just to get another client. She has a smooth voice that will relax you while your hair is being cut. She rocks and I am real happy I found her. I will not go any other place to have my hair cut. If you need your hair cut she is the one to go to.
