Horrible Hair Cut 5/6/2009

If you have ANY sense of style PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT set foot into Astor Place Hair. Times are tough and I didn't feel like paying $60 for a trim, so I thought I'd try a place to get cheap trim between cuts. I knew I wasn't going to get a great cut, but I mean this place was ridiculous. First, I asked to cut my sides with scissors and NOT the razor. He said it was not possible bc my hair was too short. My las cut was 3 weeks ago and the previous guy used nothing but scissors. What a liar!!! He then used the razor, but listened when I said not too short. He did not maintain the style of the top of my hair. He just cut straight across and ruined whatever work my last stylist did. I was not expecting much, but I thought a simple trim wouldn't turn into a waste of $15. Pros: Cheap Cons: A monkey could cut better hair more

I've been going to Jose since I moved to New York a couple of years ago. I was amazed that I could get such a good haircut w/ shampoo for less than 20 bucks. Now I live way uptown and I still come down to the Village to see Jose. Looks like those earlier Citysearch reviews were right. Worst 2 Hair Cuts of my life 5/3/2009

I went about 2 months ago to get a hair cut. I got butchered by some greek guy who wouldn't shut the F-up about how great he was at cutting hair. It was uneven and looked like shiiit. After reading the glowing recomendations on this site, I decided to go back and get it cut by someone else. I went to some old guy. I asked for a trim, he gave me a long-island blowout....and it was uneven. It cost $50 to go to real salon and get it fixed. The stylist said he hadn't seen a butcher job that bad in years. Astor Place is garbage...its like an assembly line for awful haircuts. I will never go back and unless you know someone there - I suggest you stay away. My $17 cut actually cost me $70 when you include the cost of getting it fixed. I have short, very easy to cut straight hair. more

Terrible 4/30/2009

I went to Rita because she was recommended. First of all, she barely touched my hair- trimmed just a little. Didn't wash or anything. I was asked if I wanted to dry my hair, since its chilly outside, I obviously said yes. Apparently a simply hair dry- no style, just went from wet to dry is considered a 'styling' and cost me an additional $35! No one mentioned this and I ended up paying $50 for a trim! Obnoxious and unprofessional, she barely gave me the time of day. Pros: Short Wait Cons: everything else more

Being relatively new to the city and to the US, I did not know where to go for a haircut. I have very! long beautiful hair and was a bit cautious about going to a different stylist, but i want to thank Rita for her professionalism, advise, sense of humour and friendliness - she is the person that can make your hair look adorable...no , not not adorable... stunningly gorgeous! Alberto. That's what you should say when you walk in. I have been with Alberto since i was a kid. Almost 20 years. Crazy? No, here's why. I've been through all kinds of hair styles. A thought of mine, his, or magazine; it dose not matter. Alberto has done it all, with out flaw. I get a cut every ten days because it's the best. I have been asked and complimented many many times on my hair. Then I say Alberto. Not only is he awesome as a barber but he's easy to talk to as well. In a pinch or geography I've sat with others. There is NO match! I'm writing this now, because, I felt great after he cleaned me up. I said out loud... "You don't get this anywhere! Not on TV or a magazine!" That's how good I felt when I left the chair. Most of my friends go to him. My brother and father, too. Make an appointment. Let him eat lunch. The rest is a no brainer. He knows what he's doing. Just tell him what you're looking for and that's it. Pros: No doubt in my mind Cons: He's busy, because he's that good more

Jose is the best! 4/9/2009

I moved to New York in June and started going to Jose after reading his reviews on citysearch. He does an AMAZING job every time he cuts my hair. He listens to exactly what I ask him to do, and my hair always looks perfect. He takes his time when he is cutting my hair, and is a true professional. I have sent other people to Jose too, and they have been extremely satisfied. He is a truly great stylist. Pros: Great haircut for a great price more

Jose from Astor Place is a gem in the rough. His level of experience is like no other. He has been my stylist for three years. My hair has never been the same. It is shiny, voluminous and the color lasts longer. People I have recommended, who are very particular, picky and choosy LOVE him. He takes his job seriously, he takes his time and most importanlty, he listnes. If you are looking for someone to treat your locks with the utmost care definitly look up Jose from Astor Place. alot has changed 3/26/2009

i have been going here for years. recently my experiences have went from bad to worse. i make an appointment and i sit waiting longer than i should. and then i feel like i have sat down with a stylist who is not qualified. a stylist should listen to what theyre told u want done and use that as a guideline. my recent experiences have been stylists who act like theyre listening but then go and do WHATEVER they wanna do. not even making a suggestion...they just do it. i have decided to not return. i am usually miserable after i leave. i used to be very happy with my visits. they def lost a client Pros: not pricey more

Stay away from Jose!!!!! 3/23/2009

Have been going to Astor Place for 10 years. Until recently, I would have said that it is well worth it. The price is right, it's open 7 days a week, and, although i've had some favorites over the years, have also taken my chances with whomever they send me to with good luck. Until my last haircut, with a guy named Jose. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!! (He sits to the left of the guys who refer you to the stylists.) He completely ignored my instructions and butchered my hair so badly I was literally in tears. (And obviously, I'm not that fussy, or I wouldn't go to a place like Astor Place to begin with.) They gave me a credit for my next haircut, but it will take months to grow this mess out. Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM JOSE. HE IS A DISASTER. Jose is the best 3/12/2009

I have been getting my hair cut by Jose for close to 2 years now. When I first moved to the city I went to a few other places which all ended up being bad expericences. Then I was recommended to go to Jose. I haven't stopped going since. He does a great job everytime. I dont even have to look in the mirror before leaving to know that my hair has been cut the way I like. I recommend Jose to anyone looking for one of the best cuts they have ever had. The stylist in the backroom, Fran, does the best job on hair that I've ever seen. She always knows what I want with my hair...no matter how terribly I describe it. I've been going to her for three years and she is, by far, one of the most extrordinary hair stylists I've ever been to. I highly reccomend Fran to everyone. more

I recently was reunited with Rita; I have known her for years from TV. I only get a great hair cut, style and highlights when I go to Rita and now that I have found her I will go to her any where or have her come to my apartment. I have been a loyal customer of Luigi for over 3 years. He is a Godsend for folks who do not have lots of extra money to pay for a top notch haircut. More props for Rita from Astor Place Hair 3/5/2009

No doubt about it, Rita is a great stylist! She gave me exactly what I wanted, in fact its really a whole new look for me which I sorely needed. I read so many inspiring reviews about her here that I knew I just had to make an appointment right away. I am so glad I did and listened to my instincts. Rita is a genius. On my very first appoinment I showed her a picture from a magazine of the style I wanted. I said, "can you do this?", she said sure, let's give it a try . Well, she duplicated it perfectly, right on the money, So easy! No stylist I had ever been to was able to do that before. The next time I saw her we went a little further with a new base color and highlights. My new look was now complete! She turned my locks into a rich, healthy looking head of hair that shines. I actually have people stopping me and asking where I get my hair done and that has never happened to me before. I can't than her enough. Rita is the total package, talented and personable. She loves making people beautiful, a natural at what she does. She is even a beauty herself. I feel very lucky to have found her. I will be a client for life, no doubt about it. OMG, I Love my hair! I am so grateful to have found Rita and Astor Place in the biggest city in the world! She is completely awesome! She is one of the main reason why people are still flocking to Astor Place in these tough economic times. She can cut, color and highlight like nobody's business and her friendly personality is like a breath of fresh air. Her clients are come from everywhere to see her because they know she is the best out there and there is no one else they would trust. I am ecstatic with what she?s done for me and I have been getting compliments all the time. Rita has a confidence about her that is very rare among stylists who all seem give the same cookie cutter haircuts. You can get a quickie cut anywhere, but If you want a ?look? that gets you noticed, you go see someone like Rita. I don't have a ton of money to spend on one of those silly upscale salons so Rita and Astor Place are just perfect for me and many others. Kudos to Rita... 3/4/2009

Convenience, affordability and a world-class stylist is all you could ask for in a salon and I found all 3 at Astor Place Hair in The Village. I had tried Astor Place once before a couple of years ago and I wasn?t completely satisfied, but I decided to give it another shot because I was tired of bouncing around from place to place. I heard and read so many wonderful things about Rita that I just had to see what all the fuss was about. Now I know first hand why she gets all these nice thoughtful reviews and why her clients stick with her and keep going back. Rita is a superior stylist and a perfectionist who does everything you could hope for including the most outrageously cool highlights you have ever seen! No one should be allowed to be this talented. She puts you at total ease which is just what I need and then works her magic. Rita has real passion for what she does and her calm energy makes it a total joy just to sit in her chair. The City is always so hectic and anytime you get a chance to relax and do something for yourself it makes it all worthwhile. Go see Rita a you will walk out with a big smile, I guarantee it! Rita writes her own reviews and talks a big game. She is NOT the professional she claims to be, and she overcharges for her services. Hey, It's Astor Place, not Bumble and Bumble! Her haircuts grow in uneven mis-shapen. Stay away from Rita and look for others there who seem to have a line/have clients whose styles you like! Pros: Can get a great cut with the right hairstylist.
