I had been going to more upscale haircutting establishments for a while until I could not afford it. It is tough for me to trust a new haircutter after having some bad cuts in the past. Nonetheless I did my research and heard many good things about Jose. He is the guy to go to. He gives a great cut and is a very cool, nice guy. Thanks Jose! I have been going to Astor Place for about 30 years off and on. Unlike most little kids, my son loved getting his hair cut when he was small because the place is fascinating and the people you can see there are amazing. A few years ago after having my hair destroyed by a salon in NJ and trying to fix it myself I decided to go back to Astor Place. That's when I found Fran. She is a real keeper....a treasure. I had difficult, thick, curly, dryed out hair. I told her to cut it all off. Fran worked her magic and I have never had so many compliments on a haircut and styling. She is a wonder with color, as well. Not only don't you spend a fortune, but when Fran cuts your hair it is such a good cut you don't have to go as often to have it reshaped. Three months later and I am still getting compliments on my cut despite needing a trim. I'm calling Fran today. If you want the best cut and style ever -- go see Fran. She's the BEST!! I found Jose in 2005 (after a year of searching for a good hairdresser) and will now not go anywhere else. If you are new to the city and want to a great and consistent haircut by a really nice guy try Jose out. You won't be disappointed! As you walk in he is on the left. Cons: None more

On my first visit with Mercedes i gave her a picture of Halle Berry's new do, i could have been her double when i walked out of there I let it grow just a little after the 2nd cut and it looks even better. I was at a party the other night and met a stylist who works with "the stars" for the Tonys and Grammys, and he was knocked over first to know that astor place is still there, and that the cut was amazing. There are not enough to superlatives to decribe just how great a stylist Rita is and a very sweet girl in general! No doubt Astor Place has a star stylist. I was introduced to Rita because my best friend has been using her for a long time and her hair has always looked a hundred times better than mine. My previous stylist at another salon was so boring and my hair looked washed out and dull with no style at all. Rita completely changed all that for me. I am so comfortable with her, she is a total pro and is very funny and likeable. We seemed to bond instantly which in my opinion is very, very important. I know now that I have a stylist I can trust and I can count on to keep me looking my best. I have a management position at my company and I need to be "on" all the time. Rita has done wonders for me, I am definitely getting noticed a lot more now with my new look. Besides a stunning new haircut, she completely transformed my old boring color - my hair is so rich and shiney now. It also has a healthy bounce to it that was not there before. I also had her gve me very subtle and cool highlights which made a huge difference. I literally look like I have been away on vacation! Rita really knows what she's doing, every step of the way. I really love Rita and I will be sending friends and clients to Astor Place and into her chair. I would give her a hundred stars if I could! My recommendation when you call the front desk is to ask for Rita's cell number and make the appoinment directly with her to avoid any confusion - It's a big place with lots of people. Good Luck! I've always had problems getting a good haircut... After reading the reviews about Jose at Astors Place, I decided to check it out for myself. From now on, I know where I'll be going for a haircut. Jose is the man! He has been cutting my hair for a couple years now and I would never go anywhere else. He's super rad, he pays attention to detail, always gives a good haircut and he's a great guy. While visiting NYC, and revisting some old haunts of my husbands, we passed by Astor Place Hair Design. He mentioned he used to get his hair cut there some fifteen years ago while a student at NYU. Well, wasn't that an opportunity... his hair was getting a little long, and he was looking like the mad professor. We go down the stairs, check in, and the front desk dude yells, "Mercedes," and points us over to her chair. With a warm smile, she invites me to sit downin the empty chair next to her station, as she collects her tools of the trade. She wisely looks to me for guidance, which of course I give freely, agreeing, "yes, more there," and, it's too long on top, and I'm afraid he's going to poison me in the early hours before dawn." After all, she is the expert and knows how to use the tact of inclusion. Very good.... She asks, "a little more around the ears?" I say, "yes, that would be great." Somehow he always comes home from Super Cuts with shaggy ears, and I have to trim it up, while he winces and squirms. Mercedes did an awesome job. We chatted about her son, who she is so proud of. We hope he did well in his interview with an animation magazine. He clearly inherited her talent. When she was done, my dude was transformed into Mr. Handsome, and I couldn't help but give this gal a sisterly hug. We hope we find her there again, on our next visit to a great city. For over 22 years Jose has consistently given me the best haircuts. Your experience at Astor all depends on who cuts your hair. I have been going to Mercedes for many years and cant go to anyone else. NO ONE blows out my hair like she does. Great for going to a party or just because. She is also really kind and sweet....I can't stand snooty stylists. I like doing business with people who are honest and I actually like. Okay so I may not be great with words, but I'll do my best . I don't usually write reviews, but I know a great stylist when I see one and I'd like to let people know. Rita at Astor Place Hair has been a blessing for me. I have found a girl who does it all, and does it with style and brilliance. I will never go to one of those overly-pricey upscale salons again. I now have the ultimate stylist right Astor Place Hair in the Village. All of my experiences with Rita have been awesome! She designs personal and unique looks and as a colorist, she is second to none -- her highlites are off the charts! My look is now so hip and chic that I get stares everywhere I go. It has helped me both socially and professionally. She is so confident and so knowledgeable and has helped me take care of my hair and skin between appointments. Amazing really, I have never ever looked better! I refer everyone I know to Rita so we all can benefit. No reason to go anywhere else once you find your perfect stylist.
