Best pasta in Portland 4/1/2004

On our most recent visit to 3 Doors Down my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal. The consistency of this restaurant compels us to return as much as we can, even for take out when time is tight. My wife and I choose to spend our discretionary income here because of the quality of the food and its veteran service staff. We hope to see this restaurant weather these difficult times. You have our support! Pros: Big portions, take out available, nice wine list Cons: Spaghetti and Meatballs are only available on Sundays more

Worth the wait 2/19/2004

We went with friends last friday and really enjoyed 3 Doors Down. We did have a long wait, but stuck to the bar with no complaints (ok to the bartender is kind of slow but he makes stiff drinks). Staff was overworked but gracious and tried their best to make us feel at home. Food was wonderful. Plenty in the servings to take half home for lunch the next day. We highly recommend this spot. Pros: food, staff, decor Cons: , no reservation, until march more

Just too good! 2/4/2004

All I can say is that this place is so good. The Penne vodka is the best I have had...(I lived in Italy for 3 years) and I have tried the specials a few times and have been blown away. The portion sizes are large, which seems to be uncommon around here. I have 2 suggestions for them. Add some more inexpensive wines to your great list. Soemtimes I don't order a bottle b/c I don't want to pay $30.00. How about adding a few $20.00 bottles? The second suggestion is to speed up the service a bit, they are great but I feel like I wait too long to get served I am very excited about the bar. It was a great idea...why send your business across the way while they wait for a table? Good job 3 Doors Down! Pros: food, intimate more

Tasty...at last! 10/15/2003

My neighbors have been telling me to try Three Doors Down ever since I moved in. Tonight we went (had the roasted pork chop and braised lamb thingy) and it was well worth it. The grilled shrimp were some of the BEST shrimp I have ever eaten. Flavorful and well cooked and the stuffed mushroom was delightful as well. The vegetables were excellent and perfectly seasoned and the blood orange sour was worth a taste as well. I've been disappointed in two places listed as ""best of citysearch"" finally one that lives up to it's ratings. (granted, the menu changes bi-weekly...so there's no sure bet that the same good stuff will be around!) The food does take a while to prepare...so, if you're in a hurry this is probably not the place to go! Pros: Very good food, nice ceiling, nice staff Cons: slow, no parking, noisy space more

What the HECK? 6/19/2003

What the heck is DEB talking about. My wife and I recently ate at 3DD twice. My wife didn't care for her 2 options (both looked great to me) and talked to our server. The server talked to the chef and the chef gave her a bunch of ingriedents to choose from and the kitchen made her a wonderful pasta dish. I had an awesome pork dish. Same M.O the next time we wen't except I had a great roast chicken with boudin sausage. My question is: What kind of chef is vegetarian and what fine dinning, vegetarian, establishment do you work? COOK ON 3 DD! Pros: flexable, great choices, great service more

whats all the hype about? 5/6/2003

not impressive at all. i am a chef myself here in portland at a fine dining establishment, and whenever i get a special request for something back in the kitchen, my only response is ""yes , of course i can do that"" i assumed they would be accomidating to vegetarians. its not that hard to omit the meat. i know, i accomodate customers daily with special needs. i remake an entire sauce if i have to to make them happy. shame on you head chef, for making the call that night to only allow us the one option on your menu to eat. and shame on you , our waiter, that obviously noticed we only took maybe two bites of our pasta and didn't even ask us if it was okay. we chefs talk amongst ourselves, a restaraunt that doesn't accomodate peoples needs these days, will be less frequented. more

personal touches 3/16/2003

I recently had dinner on a busy Thursday evening. The owner, admidst shaking up cocktails for soon-to-be-diners and scribbling names and numbers on the wait list, stopped to greet me with a warm smile and a graciousness that made me feel as if I was about to enter her home for the evening. This cafe is ablaze with personal touches. The menu is dotted with house-made pastas, signiture dishes and house-cured meats. The food, while comforting in simplicity and portion was thoughfully crafted and each course was presented beautifully. The service is engaging, poignant, real and focused. I was struck by the wine list: esoteric within approach - there must truely be a wine for everyone. I have had few complete dining experiences in portland and this is always one of them. I left wondering why it took me so long to get back. Pros: consistent food, incredible wine list, gracious dinning Cons: can be busy more

Kitchen is very unreliable 3/8/2003

We live in the neighborhood and would dearly like to find a restaurant that serves decent continental cuisine that we could claim as our own. The ambiance and service at 3 doors is terrific but sadly the food is completely hit or miss. On two separate occasions at least one of the dishes our party had ordered was virtually inedible due to over-salting. I also found the italian sausage in the penne a la vodka to be revoltingly gristly. What is maddening about this place is that while some dishes are poorly prepared, others really shine. It seems to me that this is a restaurant that once had food to match its ambiance but has gone sadly adrift. Pros: Off hawthorne, gracious staff, ambiance Cons: poor preparation, long wait more
