Cafe SolMar is a good place to have your morning coffee and bagel or pick up a sandwich for lunch. It's located in Ballard on 17th, right between the post office and the 7-11 on Market Street. They serve really good coffee - their signs say it's Kona coffee, but I'm not sure if that includes the espresso and you can get your bagel with plain or salmon cream cheese. They have free wifi and lots of outlets. Best of all, they are not very busy so you can get a lot done here.

I first went to Angelo at because he cuts my girlfriend's hair and the salon is very convenient. The salon is pretty small and is upstairs from two great Ballard pubs, right down the street from the OAC. Angelo is great - he does a really good job and his prices are very reasonable. If you're looking for a great haircut, this is the place.

My girlfriend went to Derby salon for a manicure and a facial and loved it. The manicure was good, but the facial was great. Apparently they use Dermalogica products that allow for a customized facial. Everyone there was very nice and professional and their prices are reasonable. She's already made her return appointment. Definitely a place to go for a facial.

For those of us who loved the previous incarnation of the Boat Street Cafe (then actually on Boat Street in the University District), the past two years have been a long wait. I loved their sandwiches, brunch and bread pudding and could not wait until they found a new spot to open up in. The wait came to an end (finally) on October 21st 2005 when they opened their new location at the edge of Belltown and Queen Anne. I finally got to go there for lunch yesterday and I've got to say that the wait might not have been worth it. The new space is not anywhere near as wonderful as the old one, but no one really expected that it would be. What surprised me most was the staff - we were seated and given our menus. When we tried to order, we were told that they had forgotten to tell us that (at noon!) they were out of one of two hot items on the menu. Okay....so we ordered old favorites (although they did take one of my favorite sandwiches off the menu) and they were very good. After lunch, the moment I had been waiting for - we ordered bread pudding....only to be told that they were out of this as well! I know that new restaurants often take a while to figure out how much of any dish they should have on hand, but their bread pudding is their signature, and at noon (they only open at 10am!) they should not be out of it. And, if they are out of something, some warning would have been appreciated. I'll try again in a few weeks, and hopefully the kinks will have been worked out by then.

The Portage Bay Cafe is a great little cafe in the U-district on Roosevelt right before the University Bridge. They have a little espresso and baked goods counter for a quick take-out breakfast and a sit down restaurant for bigger meals. Their brunch is what they are known for - it's great! They have a wide variety of egg dishes and pancakes. If you get the pancakes they come with a trip to the *breakfast bar* which has lots of different kinds of fruit, whipped cream, syrup, etc. So good. Their lunches are good, too. Things here aren't cheap (expect about $10/breakfast or $15ish for lunch), but they are very good. A note: they get really busy for brunch on the weekends, so be prepared to wait. Also, the waitstaff isn't the most attentive in town, so you might have to flag someone down if you need anything.

The Olympic Athletic Club is a great full service club in Ballard. It's in a strange old building, so it's a multi-level club. On the first floor there is a weight room, day care, pool and cafe. Second floor has the men's locker room, cardio equipment, group class rooms/basketball courts and racquet ball courts. The third floor has the spa, women's locker rooms, nautilus room and women's only work-out room. The locker rooms have steam rooms, saunas and Jacuzzis. Very nice.
