This is always a great spot to grab dinner. But an even better option is to grab a drink and step outside to the large open patio area. Although there are many undergrads on the weekends, it is still a nice place to go with a group to sit outside. There is often a cover at the door. The restaurant is nice and the food is great!

I've lived in Chapel Hill for over 25 years and La Res is a staple of this community. There is a reason this establishment is one of the few that have not come and gone like so many other restaurants in the downtown area.
While I have not eaten dinner here, I was prompted to write this simply because of the class and professional demeanor demonstrated by the staff at La Res. When I my iPhone went missing here one evening, every single member of the staff -- from the bus crew. bartenders, door attendant, night manager, and even the following day manager-- immediately came to my assistance.
They used their personal cell phones to ring my phone, they searched behind the bar and around all the tables, and tag-teamed with other staff to ensure other sections of the restaurant were searched thoroughly. All this was done while tending to the needs of other customers in an highly efficient manner during an extremely busy time in the evening.
When I called the next day, the day manager was just as attentive and searched the restaurant (again) for me. She passed the message on to her night counterpart who she assured me would continue the search.
This is a highly professional, well-run business and the staff should be commended for their efforts in customer service.
Pros: Atmosphere that exudes "Class"
Cons: None listed

Reading through these reviews reminded me that TOTH is the place CHers love to hate. They all seem to think it's unimaginative to go there, but I must say, it's a great place to take a friend visiting town for the 1st time. I've found that the specials are somewhat touch & go, but most of the ones I've had have been great. Personal favorites include the fried chicken plate, the Baja Chicken Salad, the Old Well White, & the Sweet Potato Cheese Fries. Great place to hang out w/ friends, creative entries.
Pros: good food, great location, neat atmosphere
Cons: parking, crowds

Allen & Son is the perfect southern barbecue experience. It's not fancy, but it is the best home cooked barbecue around. Everything from the barbecue to the slaw to the hushpuppies is wonderful. They also sell really nice big bones for dogs that are only a dollar a bone. Everyone can enjoy it!

For me, pork barbecue sandwiches are the real test for Eastern Carolina Barbecue. I grew up on it, and my standards are high. Allen and sons simply has the best available. I get it with slaw on top and add some Texas Pete's for that extra zing. The sandwiches are large and are a problem to deal with for the first 60 seconds or so - then it gets easier. Wait staff is very pleasant and the sweet tea is very sweet. Seating is a bit uncomfortable, but I already know that going in.
Pros: The BBQ Sandwiches
Cons: Somewhat hard to find, furniture falling apart

More
Spice Street is an artful representation of the confluence of diverse peoples in modern America. Something about the eating experience is mystical. It must be the physical set-up - the high ceilings, the fountain of water, the relationship of lighting and space, the Arabic food - that makes me feel I am eating fruits in the garden of Eden. The menu, the interior design, the wait and culinary staff merge the whole world in one kitchen and dining room. Some think the colors, sounds, and smells fight, but I see a microcosm of the mosaic that is Chapel Hill. What an appropriate restaurant to have in this town. It is a total testament to our cosmopolitan, open-minded, forward-moving community.
The food service is simply remarkable. The staff gave me a tour behind the scenes. I inspected the kitchen and the two room-sized fridges. The kitchen is at the heart of the restaurant. It is meticulously organized and clean. The vegetable storage is stocked with fresh, whole produce - pyramids of romaine lettuce, eggplant, okra, chickpeas, parsley, cilantro, tomatoes, russet potatoes, zucchini, green chili, red bell peppers, yellow squash, onions, yardlong beans. Raw black and white chocolates and custards sit behind a smaller glass fridge. In the meat storage are packages of fresh squid, beef steaks, whole chicken. The head baker kneads dough and bakes pastries and bread in a large oven in the center of the kitchen. If you imagine that Spice Street is overpriced, you do undercredit the freshness of the food and the authenticity of its preparation. Seven dollars for a Fatouche Salad is a pretty good deal, considering that Spice Street has "kept it real," or at least as real as it can get on Estes Drive.
I recommend that you have lunch or dinner at Spice Street. You would have a luxurious and delicious experience, but just as important, you would patronize the local color(s)!
Pros: Architecture, interior design, cuisine, service, parking
Cons: Spice Street is simply fine dining.

This is a great Vietnamese restaurant in Chapel Hill. We were especially looking for Pho as that is one our favorite lunch dishes, and we finally came across a perfect place for it. The food tasted very fresh. The summer rolls were great, the staff was friendly, and the restaurant felt welcoming.

Il Palio has changed since the last time we were here back in the fall. I love the new floors and walls. The menu is more approachable and less expensive. My friends and I had a great time meeting the Chef and hearing that his menu is over 75% local.
Pros: Wonderful Menu, great new look

I had almost forgotten about this place until I saw other people's reviews. When we lived in Carrboro, this was one of my absolute favorite places to go - more so than Elmo's. Their french toast is just the best! The atmosphere is casual. There are lots of good sized places to sit with a group. Servers are always friendly, even if not totally timely. I have to admit that I've only ever had breakfast food there, but that's pretty much the whole point of Breadmen's. Everyone should definitely go there at LEAST once.

We choose Elaine's for just about all of our special occasion dining. This was a dinner before the Bolshoi Ballet and therefore a special 'date night'. Elaine's never disappoints! Service is always friendly but professional and knowledgeable. Our waitress was returning on her night off to enjoy one of the newest dishes on the menu. That attitude shows that this isn't just someone waiting tables and it certainly shows in the service. The wine was excellent as were our dinners and dessert. We love Elaine's.
Pros: knowledgeable service, delicious food, valet parking
Cons: none
