A taste of Old Florida 12/30/2005

The Grumpy Grouper is the sort of place you'd expect Ernest Hemmingway hung out if he weren't so addicted to Key West. The ambiance is clearly Old Florida, laid back and relaxed, with fish tanks and Captain's chairs. It's a place mostly frequented by locals, except during the Early Bird Special time. Before 6 pm every day, for $10.95 you can make a selection from their Early Bird menu. Most items are off the regular menu, but smaller portions. What a deal! Beverage, main course, veggie, soup or salad and a dessert. All of which are home made. Not a Cisco truck in sight. The food and especially the soups are exceptional and give even the high end Palm Beach restaurants a run for their money. Catch it right and you'll also find a one man band playing Island style...Jimmy Buffett's Parrotheads welcome here. The restaurant is on one side of the fishtanks and a bar on the other. In case you miss the Early Bird Specials, don't fret. You'll get good value and nearly too much food with the regular entrees. Prices are moderate. Best of all, the service is usually prompt and friendly. more
