This is a great place for Halloween costumes as well as funky old coats. The clothes are sold by the pound. You can find cool vintage T shirts for only a couple dollars. This place is pretty picked through, but sometimes you can score a real gem. Frightening selection of tragic 80s attire. Everything's sold by the pound, so it's easy on your wallet.

The newly expanded Imagiknit in the Castro is a great resource for beginning and advanced knitters alike. The staff never hesitates to help you solve a problem with a project or answer a question --except of course when they have their bi-yearly sales and there's about 50 people in the store!
They have a huge selection of yarns and supplies and a nice library of books and magazines. It's a pretty comfortable place to hang out, even for non-knitters --they have a sofa in the middle with non-knitting mags (where I've parked my husband many times!) and tables and chairs scattered near the books.

If you are a poor art student, you will not be able to afford shopping at Flax... but if you have a little cash to spend, this is a GREAT place in terms of selection. Extensive papers, blank journals, invitations, utilitarian tools, etc... Despite it being expensive, it is hard to find a better selection. They have supplies for almost every medium. They're famous for their paper supply, with reason. Definitely worth stopping by!

Cliff's is a Castro and San Francisco institution. A family-owned variety store where you can find everything from a tiara to a box of nails. The employees have extensive product knowledge and the service is amazing. It must be seen to be understood Cliff's is the coolest hardware store in the city. Hardware is somewhat misleading -- sure, they have nails and paint, but they also have toys, crayons, pepper grinders, holiday crap, and feather boas. The salespeople at Cliff's are the nicest and most knowledgable anywhere (especially compared to the Colma Home Depot, where a worker once grunted at me). Shop at Cliff's!!

This is the best sci-fi/horror/fantasy genre book store in San Francisco. Regular events such as signings/readings and a hypo-allergenic hairless cat named Ripley. What more could you ask for? The prices are reasonable for collectors, too. Where else would you find affordable rare Clark Ashton Smith volumes? Very author friendly, if you happen to be in town... Drop by. In addition to having such a great selection of new and used books, the service here is beyond excellent. I once ordered some books through their website because they weren't currently in stock and I didn't have time to go in there to order in person. When the books came in, they called me to let me know - and when they discovered that I worked in the City, one of their staff members actually drove to my office to deliver the books in person! I was absolutely amazed by that level of service.

When I first stepped into Paxton Gate, I thought I was transported into a wonderland of taxidermied bugs and unusual plants, and well...I was. Since then I go in at least once a month to see what new taxidermy they have in. Mind you this is the classy and unusual stuff. We're talkin' beautiful butterlies, gigantic beetles, and exotic insects from farway places. Plus add a touch of whimsy like taxidermied mice dressed as punk rockers, a wedding couple and the forever selling out Christmas angel ornaments. If you prefer something living, they have the best selection of both carnivorous plants (pitcher plants, Venus Flytraps), air plants of all sizes and a gorgeous selection of unique orchid hybrids.
Even if you don't want to get out your wallet, it's a fun place to browse as though you're going to a very small but entertaining Natural History Museum -- with no entry fee!

Owned by one of the nicest guys you will meet in the business, Lost Weekend has been filling a need in the Mission for a number of years now -- a video rental place first and foremost, but also one that understands the tastes and interests of its clients. Plenty of first run mainstream movies to satisfy some tastes but even more niche genres, classic TV series, directors' series, and so on. If you can't find it here, you probably can't find it
