Bargain, value and good service 8/16/2010

Don't you just love it when you go to eat, whether you are in a hurry for lunch or want to settle down for dinner, and you are treated like you matter. Your water and chips and salsa come quickly, and darn it if they aren't good, over and over again! Warm chips, fresh salsa - and an attentive staff. They know your dollar is hard earned and they try hard to earn it from the moment you sit down. The lunch specials are a great bargain, a good variety, fast and tatsy. The enchilada's for dinner are great. The bar does a nice job if you care to partake. I love this place - they care - and for what they do they provide good food at a fair price. more

Used to be one of the best 6/5/2010

This place was at one time ( many years ago ) one of the better mexican food places to go to. Now I could only recommend it to ones short on time (unless a large group gets there before you). the food is at best bland and the prices (for what you get) are ridiculous. But I will say I like the fire place, and servers are usually friendly. Pros: fast Cons: too fast more

gone down hill sadly 5/3/2010

The guacamole advertised as only avocados, salsa fresca and secret spices contained mayo or sour cream- blecch. My burrito was bland.and left me with gas. My girlfriend's enchilada was dry. ($10 for 1 enchilada?)The refritos could have been used for spackle. The rice was passable. Hey, the coupon saved us a few $ but I'd have rather enjoyed the food. OH, service was good. Pros: friendly service Cons: Food prices up, quality and quantity down more

Mediocre at best. Good place to go if you like bland, disappointing food. Even the icecream was disappointing. Pros: We know not to come here anymore. Cons: Bland, stale food more

Really, Really Bad 3/12/2009

We just stopped by OTH for lunch for the first time and i feel like I just wasted $27.00. I looked at some of the previous posts and was baffled at how anyone can think that the food is anything but terrible. I'm assuming they have personal ties to the restaurant? I am always on the look out for good Mexican food and this was a huge disappointment. The salsa tastes like ketchup... The tamale was bland and hard... the beans were unlike any refried beans I have ever had-in a bad way... And the rice was stale and old. The waitress was nice enough to us but i noticed that when she got the order wrong for hte table next to us instead of saying sorry she said,"No you said taco not tostada sir."... Nice... Really this may be a long standing establishment but it is not high on taste or customer service. Go elsewhere. Pros: None that I saw. Cons: Bad food, bad service. more

good service, bad food... 2/28/2009

Regretfully, decided on the OTH tonight instead of Red Robin. We were looking for something fast, cheap, and easy, and considering that Mexican food is fairly difficult to eff-up, I thought OTH would be a good place to try. WRONG. Like some of the other reviews, the food was bland, the beans were obviously canned, the rice was sticky like it had been smothered in ketchup and left out all day under a heat lamp. I ordered the fajitas and my husband ordered something that resembled cat food. The fajitas were bland, the chicken was fatty, the tortillas were completely stuck together and tore when I tried to separate them, but I still managed to eat one, which resulted in me feeling sick. The manager did take the food away and credited me half of my meal, but informed me that he had never heard any complaints and he's been serving that same dish for years (very condescending). I will not eat here again and wished I had checked the reviews before trying it. Cons: the entire menu more

Pros: none Cons: the entire menu more

THE ORIGINAL TACO HOUSE in Portland Oregon, amazing original freshly prepared ingredients, american mexican flair and not found anywhere else!!! 1/18/2009

Look beyond the mere pettiness of these reviews listed here for THE ORIGINAL TACO HOUSE in Portland Oregon. You are right about one thing, this food is not authentic mexican food from Mexico but the most original, large portioned, tastiest recipies I believe the whole family will enjoy. If you are picky about service get take out. I have been eating at the Original Taco House in Portland Oregon since my Mother worked there in the 70's & I even worked there while in High School myself & my Brother Bob even worked there as a manager for many years. And I can tell you first hand all of the ingredients are made fresh daily on the premises & at the small factory next door. The enchiladas are out of this world. The beef enchilada is made with freshly roasted shredded beef. And the enchilada sauce is so amazing. They pour a lot of it over the enchiladas add a lot of cheese on top with some crispy flats to eat with it (get extra flats to slather your enchilada over them to eat). Get the Nachos, a lot of cheese, their flavorful seasoned meat & the most delicious salad dressing on this planet goes on top. The taco salads are just as great. Talk about a taco! Here, you get tons of meat & cheese on the tacos. For vegetarians that eat cheese, I recommend the Cheese/onion enchiladas & house salad dressing for the salad with the chips & salsa that are also freshly made & to die for!! For dessert they have home made bunuelos (crispy cinnamon/sugar) they put on the peppermint Ice Cream. Live/ E. Coast now & if there was a chain of those restaurants here, I would eat there a couple of times a week. Don't take the negative reviews to heart, try this food for yourself. There! Now you have MY Personal favorite dishes listed above to try for yourself. Heck, if I was local, I would not hesitate to get the items listed above catered to your next event. For now I just have to order the enchilada & sauce, salad dressing, salsa & chips by mailorder only!! Ask for Nate! Pros: It's a cute place, and homey. The cocktail lounge has great drink prices & love the food. Cons: Good and reliable help is hard to find, just ask for your favorite server when you go. more

Great tex-mex, good value 12/22/2008

I have been going to the Original taco House for years, and I always get over the top service and good for for a fair price. The enchiladas are always very fresh, saucy, and cheesy - just how I like 'em. Also check out happy hour for their killer margaritas and free-flowing chips and salsa. Last but not least - the cantina at the Powell location is cozy and PERFECT for cold days or really hot ones too. more
