I want to eat in a dark, intimate setting when I go out. If you want a bright diner, you should go down to the Original. This place remains relatively unchanged since the 70s, and that is half of the charm. The staff is just great, the vibe is warm and welcoming, and the food is right on the money.
Pros: Fantastic food
Cons: None that I know of

Let the ‘ol Irish leprechaun come out in you at Kells. It is no surprise that this restaurant and bar is hopping on St. Patrick’s Day, but is also a nice stop any time of year. Traditional Irish food and a large overflowing beer selection is standard fair at this pub.
Imagine the taverns from the Highland movies and create the perfect image in your mind of the atmosphere at Kells. Long wood tables encourage group conversation, combined with a pint of suds; there is no clear direction in where the night might take you.

This is a Fab-U-lous first date place. The decor and atmosphere lends itself to generating conversation if you are struggling to find words.
The menu is full of things like (my favorite) Baby Lobster Tails (yes, under $10!) and Chicken Breast stuffed with Crab (under $17!) which comes with salad, rice and fresh veggies.
The wine list is unbelievable for such a small jazz club. Live music nightly, as well as roving magician. This guy is unbelievably good. I swear after a night here you'll be happy you found such a cool place... even if the first date wasn't great.

I'm a city where Indian is done well. Finding it in Portland is like a scavenger hunt. Don't waste time hunting, go to Swagat. The food is warm and tasty and probably the best you can find in Portland. It's not like New York City or San Fran Indian, but you'll walk away happy.
Pros: Warm, cozy environment, hot food, good service

Yes, not fine dining. But where else can you get a complete meal at these prices. Friendly, smiling service. I can't wait to go back. Try the Mizithra and browned-butter over spaghetti. Very kid-friendly.
Pros: Value, service
Cons: Informal - not fine-dining
