I called my PCP to find out who they would recommend for urgent care - I didn't want to pay for an emergency visit $100 copay since I didn't think my arm was actually broken just severely damaged, and at the time, I didn't realize that being a general spazz and falling down at work would fall under worker's comp.
The people at ProMed wouldn't talk to me or see me until they could get hold of my "supervisor" to authorize treatment; clearly they are not used to people relatively high up the foodchain getting injured. I had no idea who to call, and left messages all over the department to try and get someone to help me figure out my way through the paperwork. By that time I was in so much pain that my ride and I were contemplating just walking out and trying a different place altogether, and lying and saying I was not at work when it happened and just paying out of pocket, just so I could get some care. I had been there over an hour and it was nearly 4:30 when I was scared they'd have all left for the night and I'd be stuck with no way to get help. I realize that's not precisely the fault of ProMed, it's government regulations but I was really really in pain. And yes, I propbably could have gone to Brackenridge ER then, when ProMed wouldn't see me, because I'm pretty sure the rules are that a public hospital has to treat you, insurance or not, and work out the details later. Fortunately my employer finally called back and the paperwork got sorted out.
The care itself is ok. You see whatever doctor happens to be there when you walk in, but at least its a much smaller pool of doctors than say, a big city ER, so the odds of them knowing or caring about your case is better, and there does seem to be some consistency of care between doctors, unlike the 5 different doctors I saw the 5 different times I was in and out of the ER spewing bl00d from my mouth and nose from a hemorrhaging sinus when I was unemployed.
Frankly, worker's comp in Texas is such horrible coverage that I would have been better off lying, so I could see my regular doc and pay the out-of-pocket for the more comprehensive care. Hardly any doctors take worker's comp insurance because the insurance co. fights tooth and nail to deny any kinds of tests, and when they do pay, it's pitiful.
Still, the doctors at ProMed that I've seen all seem competent enough, and this is pretty decent medical care all things considered.
Pros: fairly small pool of doctors, take
Cons: Never see the same doctor twice. Surly office staff.
