Central Market would definitely make my list of the top 5 things I would miss if I left Austin.
CM excels at making grocery shopping an enjoyable and educational outing rather than a weekly chore. I always try to leave plenty of time to wander the departments and try the cooking samples and check out all the fresh foods to inspire the week's recipes.
What's great is that Central Market isn't really even more expensive than HEB or your regular grocery store and we usually SAVE money due to the fact that we can buy just the amount of herbs/grains/spices we need, like a small 5¢ baggy of curry powder or $1 worth of sugar. And the regular grocery section, while focused on Organics and natural foods, does carry enough national brands and "regular" foods that you won't need to make another trip to a traditional grocery store.
The staff is friendly as hell and very helpful when you ask their advice. The seafood guys routinely throw in some disposable gloves so my girlfriend can devein the shrimp. And once when having a wine party, the wine staff recognized our invitations in the guests hands while shopping and recommended different wines for people to bring that evening!
I'm also conviced the coffee is among the best in Austin (I can never seem to replicate the magical ratio they have in their sampler coffee pots) with selection that's unmatched anywhere else in town.
What's more, the cafe is icing on the whole deal... Great tasty food and we'll routinely eat dinner there before shopping so we don't buy the store on an empty stomach.
Even though I can walk to the new flashy Whole Foods downtown and buy $6 tomatoes, I'll make the extra effort to go to CM for the week's shopping. It's selection is more mainstream, the staff down to earth, and the prices more in line with my five-figure income.

The food was spectacular here! We held a private party for about 10 people, and everyone was blown away by the food and the wine. The wild boar chops were something you need to try if they are available. The ostrich wrapped appetizers were so exotic, and so good. The desserts are a definite must. Definitely a place to go with friends...stay awhile, try out the "self-serve" wine bar, and order some food. It will be an experience everyone will enjoy. Great service from a knowledgeable and friendly staff!

We visited Austin the other weekend and happened across this place just as we were needing a place to sit, sip wine, and munch. Everything was great, from the cheese plate to the wines. The waffle cut fries are worth another flight to Austin, seriously!! Thanks for the relaxing stop.
Pros: great food, great wine, great service
Cons: not in my home town

This place is great, from the wine to the cheese and back! My wife and I are becoming regulars at Cork and make it part of our night when we head downtown. The staff is friendly and always attentive, the atmosphere is cozy but not snobby for the average to novice wine drinker. One thing I like is that ability to sample serveral wines as they offer flights. If you are looking for a great date night this is your place.
Pros: Wine Selection, Price of Wines, Staff
Cons: Not open 24 hours, Just Kidding

As far as I'm concern, Oak Hill Liquor is one of the best local stores in Austin, if you are into a big selection of wine imported beer or even local products, this place has it all, and if they don't they will order it for you, or recommend some thing similar.
Very informant and friendly staff, at least I know they're local and in business for over 35 years(Chris's Liquors).
Pros: Huge selection, friendly staff
Cons: None

Living in the arboretum area one can find many a place to dine; however, this place ranks in my top 3 places to dine at. Their pizza is amazing. Sure, you can't get a pie cheap (priced from $15-$22) but if you split on then that's a decent price for a date! On the weekends they have $1 wine glasses as well of select red and white. This place feels like you are dinning in Italy drinking vino and having a pizza cooked in a wood burning oven. The other items at the market are pricey, but look for a coupon in the Entertainment book and you will be pleasantly rewarded!

We've been retailing here since 1986. The Topiwala family with mom and pop and three brothers as well as the help of a handful of invaluable staff members. Pop started in the recession years of Reaganomics, thru the boom of Clintonia and still strong despite George II. From gas station and B-rated video rentals to our current one- stop-global-shop for beer and wine, we've been evolving from pretty much day one, trying to offer quality and service like our friendly Travis Heights neighbors and fellow Austinites deserve.
We now serve our very own authentic and unique Gujarati-style Indian food, mom approved. Beer & wine by pint & glass make it that much more yummy pairing. Also enjoy live music nightly, or at least our staff selections of eclectic tunes.
Please welcome yourselves, we've got loads of parking and a unique atmosphere to help you enjoy your daze.
Beer from all over the globe (even Colorado), wine chilled and thrilled from down-under and beyond, as well as a cornucopia of special foods and produce. Don't forget our super soda selection as well as fabulous coffees and teas.
Keep it real out there and we'll keep the deals in here. Enjoy each other and be good to your fellow Texans, cuz we only got one Texas amongst us many faces.
Thanks for reading and we hope to see y'all soon.
with warmth and peace,
~Whip In-wala
Pros: best beer selection EVER, authentic & unique indian food
Cons: limited seating
