Lazy, bad staff, laughable hospitality 7/16/2008

Okay, it's got a captive audience in Union Station, so why try, right? But this place is ridiculous. Bar was completely full and way too noisy with multiple TVs blaring a baseball game, plus service was beyond s-l-o-w. The restaurant part of the operation, located across the concourse, was practically empty at dinnertime, so we walked over asked the maitre d' (?) if we could have a drink at a table in the relative peacefulness of the restaurant -- I mean, somebody's got to tip the waiters, right? The little snoot immediately pointed to and identified the bar across the way. After we told him of our problem there and that it was full anyway, he said he could see some empty seats and turned his back on us. Whatever. Never again. Pros: Located in beautiful Union Station Cons: Everything else more

OKAY FOOD; VERY RUDE SERVICE 12/20/2007

I took a friend to TRAXX today for lunch. The salad was very large and was tasty. The waiter was acting like it was putting him out to wait on us. They had bread plates on the table, we asked for bread, answer there was no bread delivery today. Well they should have taken the plates off. Plus they were still making sandwiches. He never came back to ask us how we were enjoying our meal; we had to ask for beverage refills and he acted again put out to be doing that. The bill for 2 salads & 2 sodas was $40.00. For that, I expect stellar service which we did not receive. The waiter was Thomas C. Pros: Food was Okay Cons: Service was horrible more

Enjoyable dining 11/15/2007

The Art Deco atmosphere is definitely a feather in their cap here. The food was good, but not terribly unique. I enjoyed my beet salad and lamb chops, but had better versions (or variations) of the same meal at 561 in Pasadena where the Culinary Academy students work the kitchen and the dining room. I would recommend Traxx if you're downtown looking for a dining option, but I wouldn't make it a destination dining experience. more

Most wonderful dining spot 2/10/2007

My husband and I had seen this lovely restaurant while passing through the train station and never had time to sit. We made reservations to come back over the weekend and did. They were very busy on Saturday night at 6pm, so the meal did take at least 20 minutes to get to us....but it was worth the wait. The stuffed Pork Chop was the best I have had and my husband really loved his Beef Tenderloin in a Merlot sauce. The service was great, despite how busy they were and the ambiance of the art deco station just tied up the whole perfect evening. A little expensive to eat there alot but we will return many times Im sure. The waiter did say that Saturday at 6pm is a popular pre-theatre crowd time, so we will dine later next time. Pros: Food #1, ambiance, service, valet parking free more

Mediocre Food 11/9/2006

My boss decided to take us here as a reprieve from the craziness. Four of us ordered salads and it took about 20-25 minutues to get to our table. Once at our table the salads were not that good. My coworkers actually had to send thier salads back. My salad did not taste as good as it could have. It was a bit bland. Service was good and attentive, but the food was not worth the price. Pros: Pretty setting Cons: Quality of food more

Recommended, But Don't Go Out of Your Way For It 11/3/2006

When I walked in, I got the feeling that this place didn't get a lot of traffic. Union Station is definitely not the place you'd expect to find this type of restaurant, but I had a nice meal here nonetheless. I chose to eat in the patio outside the restaurant, and on that nice day it was just perfect. The crab cakes were very good, the steak a bit small. Pros: Food and service good enough Cons: But not good enough to draw me back more

i'm so full... 10/25/2006

i'd always pass by this place when i took the train. it looked like a great place for a cocktail, but when i received an invite to try their tasting menu, i thought of giving their good a try too. ...i was defintely not disappointed. the servicemen were attentive and the food (itself) was great! we had a table for two. (the cool table in the bay-like window.) their appetizers were fun and the entrees were filling. we couldn't believe we'd have enough room for dessert. but, when we saw it, the presentation was too alluring to turn down. so, we helped ourselves to a bite and... yes, well worth the feel of near explosion. nonetheless, a walk through the grounds of union station helped in the digestion. Pros: food, service, ambience Cons: parking more

Once was a great place to eat even w/off nights, but recently..... 10/18/2006

I have almost always enjoyed eating at Traxx. The food was usually always quite good although the service was off on some evenings. I have been out of the country for four months and having returned recently, decided to treat myself and friends to an evening out. What a surprise. The menu has changed hardly at all in those last four months and the meal was perhaps the very worst I have ever had. Steak was small and tastless served atop a huge portion of tasteless French fries and that was it. Awful. Never to return. Pros: great ambience and friendly service...always Cons: terrible menu/and really bad food this time around more

Art Deco upscale dining in Union Station 3/25/2006

I've been to Traxx on several occasions over the last 5 years. While the service is sometimes spotty, I'm always pleasantly surprised by their food. I've eaten on the outdoor patio in the summertime, inside in the private nook-located table for two, along the wall in the booths... Most recently this Saturday night we had a bottle of the Luna Pinot Grigio, crabcake appetizer, the halibut (fantastic!) and salmon. The total was around $100, and worth it - the fish was perfectly cooked. Our server didn't have us taste the wine though, just poured it and left. Pros: halibut corn dish, ambience, free valet more

SLOW and rude service. 4/29/2005

I hosted lunch for four on the back patio. We were waiting at the front, and I asked a waitress if we could be seated because I had a reservation - she said, ""if you want to sit at a dirty table, you can. we're really busy!"" That was the beginning. They were out of three menu items. One person didn't recieve their meal for 6 minutes. The server came out and we had to remind him that we were waiting for a meal. The tables next to us sat dirty for our whole 3 hour lunch - and servers were standing around talking about their lunch rush instead of making the dining room presentable. Most of the time we had to request drink service. I felt as if I was the one servicing my guests instead of the Traxx servers and I felt embarrassed that I chose this restaurant. Pros: Free valet, Creative Cuisine Cons: SLOW SERVICE, Rude servers, Limited Menu more

Food/Service-the Wrong Side of Track 1/25/2005

My first bad experience came immediately after being seated. The table to my right was having crab cakes and it smelled so fishy. The table to my left had the Crab Louie which looked delectable and I heard her say it was delicious. I ordered that - what a big mistake. The crab was fishy but the overall dish was just bland & tasteless. My friend had to order some mayo to go with it. The beet napoleon was a disappointment because all I could taste was cheese. Then there was the wait staff who could really learn from the valets, who were so attentive. We had to ask for our order to be taken. No one came to check on our food which took forever. It was even an effort to get our check. By the way there is a ridiculous $3.50 charge to split a dish. Pros: Great Valet Service Cons: , $3.50 split fee more

Did the reviewer actually eat here? 11/11/2003

I mean, by no means is Traxx going to win any awards, but the editor and I seem to have gone to completely different restaurants. The food is solid and consistent. The service is routinely amiable and helpful, without be obsequious. Parking is validated, alleviating the problem of leaving your car in a crummy area. The outdoor area is really the only problem; once, while dining, a vagrant came up to my table and actually asked me for something to eat. Kinda ruined the moment. Pros: Food, Service, Nothing beats Union S Cons: Expense account price, Weird bathroom, Bums asking for food more

Traxx needs a second chance, probably. 2/21/2003

The best part about Traxx is its location in the beautiful and historical Union Station. I think the editorial was a little harsh though Traxx does seem it like it is awkwardly trying to be a much more upscale restaurant than it can be. The food was standard upscale food, nothing terribly memorable. The sliced apple salad and vegetarian squash for dinner was fine but not spectualar. Leisurely, small, service was friendly. Probably a little overpriced for what you get. Pros: nice service, pretty atmosphere Cons: pricey, bland more

Amazing 11/30/2002

The food and service at Traxx were so great the first time we ate there that we decided on the spot to have our wedding reception there. To this day, we get compliments on the food. People were enchanted by the ambiance of Union Station and we still have not found a place that can beat the pork tenderloin! Pros: incredible food, romantic, great service more

Wedding Bells At Traxx 6/2/2002

I recently attended a wedding at Traxx, which was absolutely gorgeous. The mosaic tile in the courtyard added just the right touch to the beautiful setting at Union Station that has not been touched by time. Although I didn't get to indulge and select my own menu items, the pasta served was pretty good. I'd return for a second look and to experience Traxx on my own terms. more
