Editorial review from Citysearch 1/19/2013

I've been coming to Threadgills for over 20 years. We used to camp at Ink's Lake when the children were young and here is where we would have Thanksgiving dinner for years. We do like the home cooking, southern hospitality, and upbeat service. Fresh rolls and cornbread muffins served immediately. Service has always been above par, no complaints ever from the food or service. \r \r My daughter today had catfish and mashed potatoes. Yummy. Husband had stuffed blackened chicken, the special of the day. He totally gorged himself, and I had vegetable quesadillos. All good - above average in flavor and freshness. Also had a piece of carrot cake and a cup of coffee. Fresh, good coffee. Always a plus in my book. Coffee mugs easy to handle - not big and heavy, so the older folks can handle them. I always notice things like that, because I take care of the elderly and I am sensitive to what they can hold, how loud a place is, etc. Conversations can be held easily here, the place was only half full though. \r \r All the food we have had at both locations in Austin have been very good, we have never had any complaints whatsoever.\r \r ***update\r \r Visit 10/12. Not good veggies at all. Green beans plain and disappointing. Mashed potatoes flavorless. I don't know what's happening here but DANG fix it!!! more

Typical Southren food and big plates. 12/15/2011

Had lunch here with several people and we all clearedour plates. I had a chicken pecan spinach salad that was excellent and the chicken was cooked perfectly! more

Good Lunch 3/21/2011

went there after an entire morning watching volleyball. Why do I always get bad service in downtown Austin? i mean I sit down and it takes about 10 minutes for anyone to see what I want to drink. I wanted a cold beer but after the wait, I just ordered water. Food was OK, it was what I expected. I didnt expect to be wowed. The place was not crowded on a Sunday afternoon. that is why we went, didnt want to wait for an hour at Shady Grove. Will I go again? Only if I cant get into Shady Grove faster. more

Really Bad Food 12/15/2010

Had a good meal here several years ago but on a recent visit the food was slop. Green bean casserole was a canned bean mushroom soup mush. The broccoli was frozen and tasteless. Chicken fried steak was dry and the meat was thin. Everything tasted like Sysco food. The cobbler was unidentifiable. Take note Threadgills it takes more than being famous to keep business please improve on the quality and taste! more

Enjoyable Experience 9/17/2010

Finally decided to eat at Threadgill's after hearing live music while driving by for over a year. I was a little disappointed that the band was outdoors only and you couldn't hear it inside (you have to pay extra for a ticket to see them, which makes sense I guess) but I did enjoy the indoor atmosphere and decor. Had the chicken fried steak, and it was indeed delicious. The portions were smaller than I was expecting, though. And I could only afford one mixed drink because those were a little pricey! However the waitress was extremely attentive and peppy. I wouldn't mind returning for a second soul-food experience. more

The food simply is not good 10/2/2008

Being a resident of the South for quite a while, I was excited when I heard that Threadgills was supposed to offer great down-home southern cooking. However, I've eaten there twice, and each time, the food was bland and flavorless. The vegetables are all either over cooked or under cooked, with not seasoning or flavoring on them. The fried catfish (a staple of southern cooking), tasted like it was coated in wonderbread and then fried.\r \r The desserts are pretty good, and it is a fun place to catch a show (the drinks are pricey though!) Pros: Good desserts, fun place to watch live music Cons: Horrible food. more

Great Home Cookin' 8/20/2008

Once you've ate at Threadgills, you'll never think the same way about Home Cookin'! This place is absolutely amazing and the mac and cheese is the best! If you're ever in Austin, make sure you stop and visit Threadgills! Pros: everything! Cons: nothing! more

comfort food experts 4/30/2007

Threadgills does comfort foods the way comfort foods were meant to be done. Their water tasted like something had died in it, but everything else was wonderful...my waiter was a little scatterbrained, but it is monday and he was probably just hungover. \r \r mashed potatoes (veg.) are fabulous also the scalloped potatoes, corn, and carrots. :) Pros: vegetarian friendly Cons: gross water more

A refound treasure 1/26/2007

It had been years since I went to Threadgills and had almost forgotten about the place. I happened on it for lunch last week and then went back yesterday and today. The portions are indeed a little smaller then they used to be but the price is still right. With so many places charging an arm n leg nowadays that is a real plus. My first time back last week I had a special of pork chop in a chipotle creme sauce w/mashed potatos and corn off the cob. ($9.95) The sides were generous, the chop just a standard size. The sauce could have used a little more chipotle but was good. Yesterday I had the thursday special, chicken n dumplings. Very good and only $6.95. It comes with a salad and of course rolls. Today I had the sirloin (8 oz) 2 sides and rolls. The sirloin was prepared as ordered. (med) For $11.95 I think it's a bargain. The quality has slipped a little from what I remember but it is still a great place. Based on how hard it was to park yesterday (across the street as their massive lot was full) a lot of people agree with me. The service was pretty good every time, but I'm not very demanding. It's getting harder and harder to get a decent lunch for less than $20 in Austin. Threadgills fits that bill. BTW, I'm a pretty good cook and am often hard to please. I ask that the food be real, the portions reasonable for the charge, prepared as ordered, and taste good. Go to Threadgills, it meets my criteria. Pros: Good food at a reasonable price more

A great Austin place 8/1/2006

Threadgill's. Still turning out homestyle fare worthy of an out-of-town visitor. From meatloaf to a five-vegetable plate (with 27 options to choose from), Threadgill's has the taste to match its status as a local institution. Forks up. Pros: Great music too more

Worst Experience Ever 2/22/2006

Saturday night our waitress told us they were ""too busy"" to add cheese to fries. No problem if they are unable to accomodate a request, but to be told they're ""too busy"" is insulting. When our waitress brought a kids chicken finger dinner instead of a chicken finger basket she told us ""it's cheaper"". The manager was unresponsive when told of the incident. We asked for our check and told him we'd pay for the appetizers, chicken fingers, and drinks. He asked us pay for our entrees, which were never delivered to us. Pros: fast seating Cons: poor service more

What happened to this place? 10/4/2002

Used to live in Austin, husband born here, but had to move away for a few years. We just moved back and with anticipation visited our old haunt, Threadgills. Quality has bottomed! I almost cried! What happened to the variety of delicious breads...the portions have shrunk, the menu looks like it was cut in half, the staff was more interested in chatting with each other then their partrons, and the food was bland & lifeless. I don't know if the accountants or WHAT got to Eddie, but this place is a far cry from its former glory. Truly saddening. Pros: vegetable selection Cons: quality, service more
