Editorial review from Citysearch 1/27/2014

It's sad this place closed. I go to Portland once a year for Thanksgiving and enjoyed the white hot cocoa they had here. Portland is full of places for coffee and hot chocolate, but few have a true white hot chocolate that's not from powder. more

Discrimination?!? 6/15/2010

On Thursday ( June 10th) around 1:30-1:45 my friends and I came to Sweet Masterpiece. We all were speaking Russian, our native language. We ordered coffee and started waiting...15 minutes later ( we were still waiting!!!!!!!) two American women came and also made their order....Surprise surprise!!!! They got their sandwiches and salads in about 10 minutes....We were still waiting for our two cups of coffee....We got them only after 40 MINUTES of waiting...and when everybody at the coffee shop was served!!! When we asked a waitress, why it took her so long and why she served people came after us first, she told us ( very unclear so it was hard to understand her) that they ordered food that's why. I worked the coffee shops and it is the first time when I hear about this rule! The only one conclusion that my friends and I came up with that we were DISCRIMINATED just because we are not Americans and we were speaking Russian! more

Cherry Ylang Ylang chocolate was yummy! 6/3/2010

Two stars, but for the overall experience more than the chocolate itself. We tried a chocolate and wine pairing featuring a white, semisweet and bittersweet chocolate paired with a French Pinot Noir. We received the overview of the cacao and what it looks like in bean form, how it becomes chocolate, etc. and how white chocolate is really cocoa butter mixed with sugar and vanilla. Our host, Crystal, appears to be quite knowledgeable but unfortunately her knowledge and expertise came across as arrogance. I know not all folks have amazing people skills, but when you're working closely with a small group of folks doing a tasting, it's tough when you feel as though you're being talked down to. And I may be spoiled because I've toured a few bean-to-bar chocolatiers and have a little knowledge of the overall process and what to look for. Weird as I'm normally a dark chocolate fan, but the white chocolate was the best tasting. The semisweet and the bittersweet both had an overt ""sweetened"" taste. I am not sure how better to phrase it, but neither knocked my socks off like really good chocolate normally does. That said, we decided to try some of the cherry ylang ylang chocolate to go and it was phenomenal! I loved the flavor combination. more

Excellent sweets & lunch!! 3/28/2010

I went to Sweet Masterpiece for the first time. They were listed on the ""Black Key"" which has discounts for business's in Portland and thats how I found it. I took my son & my daughter in for lunch & dessert and it was excellent! The sandwich's looked amazing and I had their Keish which was delicious, so fluffy & fresh, the crust was light and perfect! The service was really good, the actual owner took our order and was very friendly and inviting. We then were too full for the yummy desserts but I took home a creme brulee and Wow! Very Very good! If you havent had a chance to stop into the Sweet Masterpiece, I highly reccomend it! more

I love this place 3/24/2010

I have eaten there four times: with my wife, business associates and alone. Everytime has been memorable in the best sense. You can get an education in chocolate, if you ask about their selections. The food is wonderful and plentiful. They have played great jazz in the background everytime I have been there. This is a relaxed place and they have always made me feel at home. It reminds me of neighborhood European cafe. And the chocolate is truly out of this world. It is great for lunch and great for late night food. Pros: Incredible chocolate, wonderful food, great jazz, A+ service more

SLOPPY ACCOUNTING BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE 2/21/2010

They charged my debit card twice for the wrong amounts. Would not return my phone messages regarding the error. Overall I get the impression that they really did not care that they are sloppy with thier customers credit/debit cards. Had to contact my bank to reverse the charges as the establishment would not cooperate. Will not be returning. Not cool. Pros: Adequate chocolate Cons: BAD SERVICE more

Amazing Date Spot 11/20/2009

This place is amazing! I went in to try and find a nice place to sit and write and drink some coffee- Instead I found a taste of heaven. Their menu ranges from their raspberry Dream Cake to drinking chocolate to soups, salads and sandwiches. Everything is house made and delightful. Its ridiculous. The staff was amazing. The quality was amazing. Truly a Masterpiece! Pros: Great Menu- Variety of everything Cons: No Liquor License Yet- Wine and Beer only. more

oh, really! 9/26/2009

I want to warn anyone who reads this...DO NOT use Sweet Masterpiece to cater your wedding. My son & daughter-in-law made the mistake of trusting this establishment to cater their wedding. They were extremely late, which threw the whole wedding reception off. When the food finally did come, there wasn't enough for the guests who stuck around & waited for hours on end for the food to arrive. To top it off, the quality was very, very poor. We could have done better with Costco. Beware, the owner of Sweet Masterpiece talks a good game but definitely doesn't deliver. She basically ruined the wedding. Pros: chocolates are good Cons: everything else is very poor more

Phenomenal, Delicious, Heavenly 11/13/2008

I just moved from Atlanta, GA recently and stumbled upon this place as I was walking around the Pearl District with my finance. We gave it a whirl and it ended up being one of the best Portland dessert experiences EVER! The owners of the restaurant are unbelievably hospitable and are there every time I've been there. The lady who owns the place started making chocolate at home from scratch and decided that she wanted to make a fulltime job out of it. Nevertheless, she has an exceptional taste for chocolate. The coffee's amazing; have to try their Masterpiece Mocha. The prices for the coffee are comparable to Starbucks. If you want great tasting desserts, take a peek at their dessert cabinets and decide from there. I initially decided on a dessert from the menu and it was unbelievable but ALL the desserts there are just out of this world. You can taste the quality in this lady's craftsmanship. My complaint about Portland was always that they didn't have enough dessert/coffee places and I can say that I will finally stop complaining. Ohh, one more thing, they have TRUFFLES!! OMG, how amazing is that! Pros: The chocolate Cons: The timeliness and cleanliness needs a little work more

Bliss 5/16/2008

Let me break it down like this: tonight my friend and I went there like we do almost every Friday night..We were looking at the truffles/confections section and the owner blew our minds. She described what we were looking at with such patience and attention to make sure we grasped the concept of the different flavors. We ended up getting a hazelnut dark chocolate fondue with a side of bacon. Yes. Bacon. She wanted us to have the best experience with what we were eating/drinking. When we first bit into the exquisite bacon with the equally delicious fondue, it was such heaven we wanted to cry. Seriously. I told her so and she said that not enough people put love into their food and they @ sweet masterpiece want to inspire people to enjoy their food again, not eat out of a box, etc. However you choose to nourish yourself, go to S.M. at least once in your life. It's soul food. Made with a whole lot of love. more

Decadent delights...delightful owner 3/25/2008

I found this place on citysearch and decided to take my friend here to have coffee tonight. What a great place! Their desserts are tantalising.....very good matchto Papa Haydns' creations. Maybe 1-2 dollars more pricey but the experience is worth it. The Marble Mocha coffee is almost perfect..right blend of sugar, caramel and coffee. I tried the triple chocolate cheesecake while my friend had the chocolate pudding+icecream. Great choices. The employee behind the counter was friendly and polite. One of the owners was kind enough to attend to our table personally. She was very polite and there is no doubt that I'll recommend this place for dessert, coffee or just a quick dash to grab chocolates for someone special! Pros: lots and lots of variety Cons: tables were spaced too closely, main door needs to be tightly shut all the time more

A True Meaning of 1/8/2008

Deffinatly the ""Pearl of The Pearl"", a must attend for anyone in portland, if you need anything from a romantic date to a simple cup of coffee. I was wondering arround the pearl district one night and stubled upon this quaint yet refined establishment, i decided to treat myself to a double espresso, a piece of White Chocolate Carrot cake, and some of their vegan truffles for the road, and if you can't tell already... i was blown away. The espresso, micro-roasted in town, as the strapping young barista told me, was like a beacon of hope and promice, that the coffee industry is shaping up, or at least that this cafe is. the carrot cake was better than words can describe, and the truffles for the road put a spring in my step as i snaked on them walking back to the street car, who would have thought a dairy free truffle that actually tastes good, nothing shorter than genius. Anyway, to all in Portland, GO TO SWEET MASTERPIECE, good coffee, good sweets, good art on the walls, friendly and fun staff, and i even saw a sign saying that they have sandwitches for lunch! SWEET! Pros: Everything Cons: I didn't spend enought time there more

Weak on presentation 11/19/2007

I love the chocolates here. I wish the young staff would treat these chocolates with as much respect as they deserve. I hate seeing beautiful, artisan chocolates carelessly put in plastic bags. I bought several yesterday for my mom, and by the time I got out to the car, they looked like an awful mess due to the way they were placed in the bag. I wish the staff would either ask if the chocolates will be gifts, or treat each order like it is one. I had to take the chocolates out and repackage them myself so they looked presentable. Pros: delicious chocolates Cons: poor packaging more

Friendly service, chocolate and wine! 7/2/2007

I enjoy this little cafe for several reasons. Firstly, this is a great place to learn about and try different kinds of chocolates and desserts. Secondly, the staff is ALWAYS friendly, attentive and eager to answer questions. Third, they are big on using organic/local/the freshest ingredients possible. Last time I visited I had the strawberry shortcake on a hazelnut biscuit. Sooo good. This is a great date spot and also a great place for a single gal to sit, read a book and have some chocolate and wine. Pros: Friendly staff, variety, fresh and local ingredients Cons: No wifi more

A sweet find 6/15/2007

We stumbled onto this little shop not long after they opened and have been back many times. Their desserts are exquisite, with interesting pairings of flavors. And the staff is great. They're always willing to answer questions and make us feel at home. We'll be back again and again! more
