I had high expectations after reading the reviews on this site, but I must say I was sorely disappointed. I arrived prior to the other person in my party and was told that I could...

Great specialty rolls, but that's about it 1/21/2007

We went to Sushi Sake for a friend's birthday. The service was terrible--the waitress waiting on us waited 30 minutes to approach us and take our drink order. Then, she gave everyone the wrong drinks. The food, however, partially made up for all of this. The specialty house rolls, The Spicy Susan and The Spicy Carlos, were outstanding!! I very highly recommend them. The rest was not very good--my husband loves salmon and our salmon sushi was so chewy and hard-ish that he ate one piece of it and couldn't eat anything else, and we had a lot of food left. The other roll we ordered was completely unremarkable. I don't think we'll be back, unless I get a irrepressable craving for the outstanding specialty rolls (Susan & Carlos). If we do ever go back, I can guarantee it won't be on the weekend, because the wait is certainly not worth the experience. After asking for our check 3 times, we finally got it and were surprised that it was what we normally pay at Uchi, even though the rolls run around $8-10 each. Uchi kills this place, and I would much rather put my money where the food is good. Pros: Spicy Susan, Spicy Carlos Cons: all the other sushi, wait staff, long wait on weekends, overpriced for the quality more

Yumm Sushi! 11/19/2006

Sushi Sake is one of the best sushi restaurants I have been to in Austin (and I have been to a lot of them). I believe that Uchi may use fresher fish, but it comes at higher price. Sushi sake is a romantic restaurant that can be used for groups (where you can request the traditional Japanese sitting if your group is large enough). For a fun drink, I recommend the Wasabi Martini (extra wasabi for an extra kick). Generally when I go to restaurants, I like to try the specialty rolls. I strongly recommend getting the Spicy Susan roll (my favorite every time). There is also their deep fried phoenix roll, caterpillar, dragon, and you might still be able to order the Spicy Carlos (for those in the know). Pros: Great Sushi, Romantic Ambiance, and Prompt Staff Cons: Need to make reservations... nothing much here really! more

King Of The Hill!!! 10/21/2006

We were in the restaurant on a very busy Saturday night with another couple around eight o' clock. We got on the waiting list that were told about thirty minutes; so we just ordered some bar drinks to pass time. Incredibly one of the signature drinks that we ordered was delicious and beautifully prepared. We continued to enjoy our evening with our friends when our names were called. We were very surprised that it was just probably 15 minutes has lapsed, and funniest of all that one of the staff jokingly humored us that he lied about the waiting time!!! We were greeted by Charley at her table and the rest of our dining experience were beyond excellent. The sushi, shrimp tempura & services were outstanding. I am also in the foodservice industry and I have never seen such a teamwork astmophere that evolved with the personnels from busperson to host/hostess to manager. I really tipped my hat to Sushi Sake establishment. Lastly of course we will be coming back frequently!!! Pros: Excellent staff, food & services. Waiting time very speedy! Cons: Parking spaces more

No clue on customer service 10/11/2006

The service greets you professionally but rarely follows through. more

Good deal 10/9/2006

Ok this sushi is not the best in town. Let's not be overdramatic. But it is good particularly for the price. The chef takes special requests & the staff is friendly. Sit at the sushi bar and you get a hot towel and an orange at the end of your meal. There are better/higher quality sushi places in town, but this is pretty good especially if you dont want to wait for hours or break the bank. Pros: Value, parking more

First experience very good! 9/25/2006

We are pretty avid sushi eaters and heard good things about Sushi/Sake so we decided to try it this weekend and we were not disappointed. We walked right in and were seated on Friday night around 7, which doesn't happen in this city. The waitress informed us of two sushi rolls that were not on the menu ( i liked the spicy susan). Our edamame came very quickly, as did any nigiri we ordered. Some of the rolls followed shortly after. It took a little longer for the special rolls, but we were having a leasurly dinner so it didn't bother us. Our waitress was very attentive and made excellent recommendations. Overall it was a very pleasant experience Pros: attentive service, good sushi Cons: wait time for sushi more

Tha bad quality of Sushi is trumped by an even worse service!! 9/2/2006

Ok, we went to this sushi restaurant on Friday night. The place looks very nice, the ambience was good, and the place was pretty busy. We are avid sushi fans, we lived in Japan for years while I was in service and we have a pretty good idea what a sushi should be, and better yet what is NOT good sushi. Pros: Nothing that ouweighs the con Cons: bad service, very bad sushi. Not a good place for a true sushi fan more

Fresh Fish! Friendly Waitstaff! Can't Go Wrong! 7/12/2006

Consistantly Great Food. Charley is a fabulous waitress! She makes you feel right at home! Highly Recommened for quality and a good price with service you can't find anywhere else in Austin! Pros: FRESH FISH GREAT STAFF more

Great Sushi 6/26/2006

If you go make sure you order the Spicy Susan (it's not on the menu, but you won't regret it). Always delicious. Also the Spicy Carlos and a few other good rolls lurk off of the menu and are worth trying. Everything here is always fresh and good. Unfortunately it seems that the price of some of the specialty rolls are going up (eg - Spicy Susan), but still one of my favorite sushi places in Austin. Highly recommend! Pros: Consistantly Good Sushi more

Most of cooked food we ordered was dry. 6/17/2006

We chose this place because of the positive reviews hear on CitySearch and three of us had dinner there last week. The salad, Miso soup, Sushi, Shimp Tempura, and Vegatable Tempura were all great and we would return if that was all we wanted to eat but the Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Teriyaki and the rice were all overcooked. I don't remember every getting dry, crusty rice in an Asian Restaurant before. I like it moist and sticky which I think is the way it's supposed to be served. We brought most of the Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Teriyaki home and tried them again the next day after some gentle warming. Pass! Pros: Good Sushi and Tempura Cons: Dry Salmon, Chicken and Rice more

You'll like this place! 5/19/2006

Great sushi and other Asian food. Many say this is the best in Austin. Great staff and decor. Ask for John O who knows the menu well and he'll help you find those special sushi rolls that will make your meal an experience you won't soon forget. more

go for the food, stay for everything else 2/24/2006

John, Gary, Charley, Angel and all the other amazing staffers at this place really add to the already great value of the food. This is a regular girls night spot for me and my friends, and the perfect place to start out a night on the town. Ask for the off menu specials and trust that every time you return, you will continue to be impressed. I'm really looking forward to their new downtown location on 2nd street to open. Enjoy! Pros: food, personal service, affordable Cons: addictive more

Great Sushi, Great Atmosphere 2/14/2006

Having moved from California, my husband and I have become used to eating great sushi . Sushi Sake offers fresh fish and a pleasant atmosphere. I wasn't sure what to expect since it is located in a shopping center. The moment we walked in, I was happily surprised to find a truly lovely restaurant. We ordered a couple of the lunch specials (chicken teriyaki for my son - which was delicious by the way) and also the Lunch special E which was three generously portioned handrolls (salmon skin, Ebi, and spicy tuna). Each special came with Miso soup. Of course, we also ordered various pieces of sushi, which were also generously portioned. You can tell alot about a restaurant by their uni - I was very impressed. We spent about $40, which is pricy for lunch but about average for a sushi dinner (without drinks) for us. Pros: Great sushi, Relaxing environment, Friendly service more

Nothing holds a torch to Sushi Sake! 2/5/2006

We have tried many many sushi places in Austin, and nothing can even hold a torch to Sushi Sake. The fish is amazing, and fresh. They have unique rolls and different specials every day. Service is excellent and the ambiance is great as well. Very professional staff. It is very reasonably priced for the quality!! If you find a place that can beat this, please let me know!!! Pros: fresh sushi, ambiance, service more

Favorite Sushi in Austin 9/15/2005

This is my family and friends favorite sushi place. It's reasonable, the fish is fresh and excellent. The service is terrific - they are very helpful. We now only order the specials and they are awesome! Yum Yum! Need to go back soon. Pros: Reasonable, Fresh, Excellent service more

Great place 4/23/2005

The sushi is fresh and well prepared. It is definitely one of the best sushi places in Austin. I recommend getting the yake make. It is excellent but pricey. more

Yum~~~ 12/26/2004

I really like this restaurant alot. Me and my husband go there very often. I'm from CA & my husband is from HI so we really love seafood especially sushi and sashimi. There seafood is fresh and we're satisfied with everything we ate there so far. I say it's the best Japanese restaurant in Austin. Pros: great food, freindly service, good parking more

Sushi is nice, but not Teriyaki Sauce 12/4/2004

The quality of Sushi is nice. I tried a couple of different types of Sushi. Their Futomaki is very fresh and thier Miso soup is great. However, I was very disappointed with their Teriyaki sauce. I know what Teriyaki sauce should taste like. I thought it was an insult that they call it ""Teriyaki."" Frankly speaking, it is a far cry from from ""Teriyaki"" sauce. (They also use honey to sweeten the sauce instead of using sugar?) Their Teriyaki sauce tastes like Sallisbury steak sauce. Sorry, it's true. ""Yakitori"" was also a big disappointment since they use the same Teriyaki sauce. As for ""Tempura,"" it's pretty good. It's very light and crispy. Also, I like the fact that they give you some ""grated Daikon radish"" to mix with Tempura dipping sauce like the way they do in Japan. I'm interested in trying some other menu items. more

more authentic than others 11/26/2004

It may not compare to Musashino but I consider Sushi Sake to be somewhat authentic and pretty cheap for what you get. The service is pretty good - I've been here a handful of times and I've never had a problem. Pros: good food, price, parking more

Sushi-rific 9/28/2004

This is the ONLY place to eat sushi in north Austin. The Scorpion hand roll and Yokohama roll are my favorites, but you really can't go wrong no matter what you order. It's just fresh fish and in great combinations. Sitting at the sushi bar is a pleasure with the attentive, not over-attentive, chefs. Pros: fresh sushi, nice sushi bar more
