Poor Valentine's Dinner experience 2/15/2006

My wife and I went to Sullivan's for Valentines day, and we it was a disappointing experience. We arrived 5 minutes before our 8pm reservation, and were told there was a 20-30 mintue wait. We couldn't find a seat, because the waiting area and bar was packed with people who had reservations just like us. We did sit down until 9:10pm. We had to sit in the Jazz club on the side and they had live entertainment. It was so loud we couldn't have a conversation. During the break, they turned up recorded music so loud we still couldn't hear each other. The food was good, but they had already run out of bread. Overall, a disappointing experience. We spent $175 for an ok meal, but had to wait an hour with a reservation to be seated at a terrible table, and didn't get any bread. I expected more. more

Sullivan's is excellent! 1/17/2006

I recently went to Sullivan's for the first time. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. I ordered filet mignon with au gratin potatoes. My steak was tender, succulent, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and just the right temperature. The Au gratin potatoes were ordinary. The wedge salad with blue cheese dressing that is included with the entree was crisp and cold, and the dressing excellent. The service was highly attentive. Our water and wine glasses were filled often, dirty dishes removed from the table promptly, crumbs cleaned after each course, and the entire staff was professional and courteous. Complaints: I think side dishes should be included with a $30 steak. They didnt have a boneless rib eye on the menu only bone-in. Downtown parking is difficult. I would definitely go back to Sullivans; however, it is pricey and most people would probably reserve this restaurant for special occasions. Pros: Food, Service, Romantic atmosphere Cons: Pricey, Ala carte menu, Downtown more

Wonderful food! 11/28/2005

After reading the other reviews I felt I needed to add mine. The food here is terrific! They have many items that are "off the menu"; just ask your waiter for these items and he/she will gladly explain them. The seared tuna is still my favorite and the steamed artichoke is great. We had our rehearsal dinner in their private dining room and let me tell you that it was better than the wedding! The service was amazing! The waiters were so attentive to my guests and their experience that I ended up tipping more than 30% and request the same waiters everytime I eat there. The food is so consistently good that I recommend it to all of my out of town guests because I know that they will not be disappointed. I would recommend making reservations but if you do have to wait, believe me, it's worth it! Pros: service, food more

Don't waste your time 10/3/2005

My husband and I went there a year ago (October 2004), for our anniversary. No I didnt make reservations because I foolishly thought being a Tuesday night, it was unnecessary. We were told the wait was going to be 30 minutes fine. 1 hour later, our waitress in the bar said we have been waiting quite a while and she was going to check to see when we were going to be seated. She came back and told us we had one more group ahead of us. The group was seated. 30 minutes later, a couple entered (they looked very wealthy), had a drink at the bar and were seated shortly after. My husband and I walked out infuriated. This was after watching another gentleman yell at the hostess and walking out 15 minutes prior to us. Pros: None Cons: Small dining room, Poor Service more

Bud Thompson 10/3/2005

I have eaten at this restaurant many times. It appears that new management has added considerable value to both the quality of the food and the service. It is definitely Austin's best high quality steak house. more

Great business meal 10/2/2005

I often visit Austin on business and I never miss an opportunity to eat at Sullivan's. I recently took the opportunity to have a meal with a colleague and a client and it was even better than I remember. This restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Austin. It is never difficult to get parking with convenient curbside valet. The staff was friendly and professional. We had a short wait in the bar area where there was a live jazz band playing and TV's with the college game. The main dining room was perfect to have conversation. I ordered a filet with asparagus. We closed our business meal and headed to the attached club for some live music. I am also often looking for a nice place to dine while alone and have found Sullivan's lounge to be one of the best places in Austin for a lone sitting. Pros: atmosphere, easy parking, quality food Cons: downtown more

Sadly Disappointing 9/25/2005

Having heard many raves about Sullivan's, we were eager to visit, but it must have been an off-night for them, because our entire experience was hugely disappointing. Though we'd made reservations, we waited nearly 45 minutes to be seated. The service was excruciatingly slow and inattentive; we had a hard time even getting our waiter's attention. As for the food, we started with a delicious seafood arrangement that was fantastic! Unfortunately, all three of us ordered steak for the main course, and all three were sub-par. Each was somewhat overcooked, and the one ordered medium-rare came back medium-well! The waiter was quick to acknowledge the error and replace it, but that kind of gross oversight is unexpected from an establishment so well-known for steak. Overall, this meal would have been disappointing for half the price at a restaurant with half the reputation. Pros: Seafood, Atmosphere Cons: Overcooked Steaks, Very Slow Service more

Wonderful place 4/4/2005

We went for our anniversary and it was fabulous. Service, food, and overall experience was very pleasing. We had to wait for a short while to be seated but hostess was extreamly attentive and we were sat promptly. The bar area was also very satisfying as well as our drinks and cocktail server. Great place!!! escargot is the best! Pros: FOOD, STAFF, WINE SELECTION more

Splendid time, great Filet & Mgmt 12/16/2004

Well, on the contrary, the 5 of us had a great time at Sullivan's. Our first time, I have heard rave reviews about their steak, we got the filet and porterhouse and they were excellent, although some portion sizes were uneven (we all ordered same). The side dishes were very good (mashed potatoes), and most of all the District Manager (Rob I believe) provided exceptional service. I did speak to him earlier about reserving a spot as we were deciding btwn them & Trulucks, he wanted our business and delivered! Awesome environment too. Pros: Great steak, ambience, Mgmt service Cons: , waitstaff busy more

Poor Management 10/11/2004

I've been to this place a couple of times. I wasn't pleased at all both times. I was more upset with the staff. The food is just ok. Nothing to brag about. The staff is not that considerate of their customers. If you look like you got money, maybe you look like eye candy to the staff. I've heard rumors of how managment helps "friends" with cutting prices off the bill. This place needs a lot of diversity. If you're not the right color, it's not fun. I've heard comments from their staff about the kind of people dine there. The managers at this place are snotty, rude, and disrespectful. The female managers need a reality check. It's not all about the money. Cons: , Discourteous more

Bad Dining Experience 4/25/2004

Went there for a birthday dinner. Made reservations for 7:30pm on a wednesday night. Ended up getting seated at 9:15pm. I was surprised how small the dining area was...no wonder the wait was so long. Our already small table was divided in two by the waiter to accomodate another couple who sat about 3 feet from us. Hardly romantic when you're packed in that tightly. Waiter was rude and unattentive...rolled his eyes when I said we wanted the check instead of dessert. I've heard the one in Houston is a lot better as far as service goes...then again they have more competition. Food was pretty good, but after the anticipation being built up for over 2 hours there was no way it could measure up. I'm much more inclined to sacrifice a bit of food quality at a different restaurant than waste 4 hours of my time again. Pros: Steak Cons: , Wait, Ambience more

Disappointing 3/11/2004

Being from South America and growing up on great and natural beef, I found it extermely disappointing, especially for a "premium" restaurant. The beef was drenched in Worcestershire sauce or similar, totally overpowering the taste of beef. Throw a 1/4 slice of iceberg lettuce that they call a salad, a charge for any sides and a $70 per person tab... without wine... and you have yourself a wasted evening and unfulfilled expectations. I wish I hadn't gone there. Cons: , bad taste more

very disappointing 3/11/2004

My experience was disappointing. The waiter questioned my beer choice and never picked up our salad and appetizer plates. WE had to stack them on the end of our table. They were out of one of the side dishes and when we ordered another one, it was never brought to us. The waiter never apologized--I guess he never realized his oversite. But that's not hard to believe since he was FAR more interested in the table next to us with all their expensive bottles of wine. I'll never go back. more

Cooked just right 2/3/2004

I cam in from Minneapolis of which is home to one of the finest Steakhouses in the country. Sullivans was not quite to that reach, however I found our waitstaff and service was up there at the top. When I requested Asparagus of which was not on the menu, they brought some regardless. That is what separates other restaraunts from the others. I will go back there when I am back in Austin. Pros: Food, Service, Price more

Overbooked 9/23/2003

Every time I go to Sullivan's I make a reservation and end up waiting for an hour (beyond the time of my reservation) for a table. Clearly the management is overbooking to boost bar sales. They are taking advantage of their customers. Also, when you walk into the lobby, there are drunk people (who have been waiting and drinking in the bar on an empty stomach) yelling at the greeting staff. It gives the whole experience a negative tone when you walk in the door. This place is run like the corporate chain that it is. Cons: overbooking more

A Great Dining Experience! 8/23/2003

I have been to Sullivan's many times over the past few years, and have had nothing but exemplary food and service. They are accommodating, and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. Highly recommend this spot for a nice night out! more

World Class ! ! ! 7/2/2003

I currently live in Hong Kong and call Austin home. I travel all over the world and think Sullivan's is a World Class resturant. I eat there every 3 months when I am home. Great Service, Food, Wine and Atmosphere. A true Austin icon. more

Monday night-1/2 priced bar food! 6/14/2003

Visit the Sullivan's Bar on Monday nights. Talk about value --- 1/2 priced bar food. The best burger in town, by far. Pros: upbeast atmosphere more

Awesome! 5/9/2003

My husband and I Just spent a great evening there, our waiter, Kyle was the best, the food, although a bit pricey, was worth every penny. We had the seared Ahi Tuna appetizer, which was good, but not being a seafood fan, I was not that impressed, but the Cajun Ribeye, Horseradish mashed potatoes and the 3 Cheese Chipolte Pasta were all to die for, and don't forget the Chocolate Souffle - one of the best in town. If you are looking for a great steak in a fun, upbeat atmosphere, this is the place. Pros: Great food, great service, friendly staff Cons: parking more

not bad, loose the attitude 4/25/2003

First timer, food okay, overpriced," our server disappeared"? wandering aloof hostesses, get real, lower the prices a bit, leave out the salt, and sweet pineapple house drink, fill up the wine glasses. this is not New York....and never will be. Pros: cleanliness Cons: PRICE more

  • In Short
The interior speaks of old-school elegance, with dark-wood paneling, faux library and black-and-white photographs. The dining room faces an expansive open kitchen and the sealed-off, temperature-controlled wine room reveals a floor-to-ceiling selection of wines. A seasonal special, Maryland soft-shell crab, is battered in Japanese bread crumbs. The porterhouse steak is cooked perfectly, the meat tender and gently marbled, crusted with a flavorful blend of coarse pepper and salt.
