Best

The decor is rustic and somehow still chic. The bar is small and inviting. The Chefs Benedict is sauted proscuitto, fresh tomatos with oyster mushrooms swimming in a spicy holland...

Worst

I have been going here for about a year almost every weekend for brunch. The food is excellent, but the service is not. It has deteriorated in the last six months. Even when it's ...

It's second to none! 1/29/2003

I went to the Second Story Bistro this past Sunday for breakfast, and it was absolutely the BEST traditional breakfast I have ever had. I got the Second Story Breakfast with Chicken Sausage. The service was very attentive and extremely friendly. The atmosphere is beautiful, with brick walls and a forest-themed entrance complete with a magical little bridge. It's great for children, especially my 15-month old, who spent most of breakfast flirting with the female waitstaff. Also, the price rating on here is inaccurate. Their most expensive dish is $9.00 (the steak). Pros: Great service, Amazing Food, Kid-friendly more

Great atmosphere, amazing food! 1/24/2003

The food at Second Story is so superior to that at many more popular restaurants, we could not figure out why there was only one other table of diners when we ate there on a recent Saturday night. Ambiance is unique, service is great, and each course was thoughtfully prepared and presented. The duck in particular was some of the best in town! The chicken in mushroom sauce and the pork tenderloin with port sauce were both great too. Salads were excellent, and the creme brulee was rich, creamy and delicious. Prices are also very reasonable. Please give this restaurant a try! Pros: knowledgeable service, interesting menu, excellent value Cons: few other diners more

Save the liver! 1/23/2003

Usually when we try a French/PacNW place like this, we end up saying "we should have just gone to Paley's." Not so with Second Story. Everything we had was just excellent. My liver-averse wife even liked the chicken-liver based pate appetizer. Our seafood entrees (sturgeon and bouillabaisse) were perfect. I hope they build a following because on a Friday night the place was almost empty. Interesting setting, friendly service as well. Pros: not that busy on wknd, SmartPark 2 blks away, friendly staff Cons: not that busy more

Great breakfast alternative to Mother's 1/10/2003

I love this restaurant. The atmosphere is a little strange and sometimes it feels like you're eating in a treehouse, but the breakfast and dessert are wonderful. I took my very picky friend and her husband to Second Story and even they raved about it all weekend. Pros: Great Breakfast, Great Service, Fresh Raspberry Jam Cons: Enchanted Forest Feel more

French Experience 11/17/2002

The wood decor mixed with brick gives a unique ambiance. The food and service were excellect. It was reasonably priced. $15-$20 Will go back. more

Get your brunch on 11/4/2002

Entering the Second Story Bistro feels like climbing up a treehouse. Lovely decor, accommodating waiting area and bar and many good, flower box lined window seats are features. I went for brunch and you should, too. Start the morning right by ordering a mimosa. I had the eggs benedict which was yummy, but I think the croissant (instead of a english muffin)makes it too sweet. My partner had a scramble, which was cooked perfectly. The potatoes are a littly oily, but well flavored with onions and bell peppers. Service was good, though a bit distracted. A great place to bring any visiting guests. Pros: Good brunch menu, Great decor, Yummy food more

Wonderful, Beautiful, Tasty food! 10/20/2002

I had no idea where I was heading and had never heard of this place and was so amazed at the quality and quantity of food for the price. The waitress was very good with wine pairing to our dinners. Great atmosphere to boot it felt like I was looking over a veranda in New Orleans being on the second story and the open rustic decor. Pros: large portions, centraly located Cons: downtown parking, prices more

Smashing food, great prices! 9/24/2002

Some of the best fare I've had in Portland. The quality is consistent, and always good. The desserts are to die for (especially the pecan pie), and the service is fantastic. If you're a coffee drinker, the house coffee has some good kick without being bitter. The atmosphere is very relaxed and open, and it's a bit of a treat being one story above the street. Pros: Location, Good food/prices, Great desserts Cons: Parking during day more

Husband's choice 9/14/2002

This was a wonderful surprise. When my husband and I went out for our Anniversary I wasn't to sure what kind of place we were walking into. The food was wonderful and the sevice was excellent. We don't know much about wine but our waitress was a great help. Would reccomend to all of my friends. more

Great menu 9/12/2002

It's rare that a restaurant with so many choices on the menu can make all of the dishes well and do it consistently. The breakfast menu offers loads of choices and they poach eggs perfectly. For lunch and dinner, seafood and meat preparations seem to be a specialty as each dish I've had from the salmon to the duck confit to the filet have been incredible. The vegatables are well cooked but I prefer steam preparation to an abundance of olive oil. Appetizers are a fantastic value and there's a good wine selection. While seating time and service are always prompt and friendly, the kitchen can take a little while to craft their fine dishes. At breakfast and lunch, the check often takes some time to reach the table. Small issues when compared to the level of quality and enjoyment of the great food and service and very reasonable prices. Pros: Fabulous menu, Perfect poached eggs, Great appetizers Cons: Kitchen sometimes slo, Check takes some time more

PLEASE NOTE! 9/3/2002

A lot of the reviews for this restaurant are for the old restaurant that used to be in this location, Second Story Bistro (now closed). Beware -- I have never eaten at Olive Branch, but my Second Story Bistro review appeared in this space. So, take the reviews here with a grain of salt. I already send a comment to Citysearch but they have not fixed this yet. Cons: Reviews are not accurate and may be for a closed restaurant that used to be here more

Great eats 7/28/2002

I have been there for brunch and dinner. Both experiences were excellent. Great food, Good prices, and wonderfull service. Great addition to Portland. more

Bearnaise Bedazzled Bounty 7/23/2002

This wonderful addition to Portland's restuarant scene is a true winner. The food is excellent, the sauces are an authenic delight, the service is attentive, and the upstairs location seems a world away from the streets below. Seafood and vegetables are treated with respect and never overcooked. Steaks are cooked to perfection. Sauces, the heart of French cooking, are executed with genuine care, and enhance the food they grace. The Salmon Oscar is excellent, and when followed by a desert of their house-made anise-flavored ice cream, you are in heaven. Pros: great food, great sauces, inexpensive Cons: no hard liquor more

Great Breakfast 7/16/2002

Had breakfast here with 5 friends on Sunday morning. Tthe food was very good and the eggs benedict........excellent! more

Wonderful 7/13/2002

I loved this place. It may become my new favorite. The food was excellent; the staff friendly. I was so impressed that I had dinner and went back for breakfast the next day. For the quality of food I found the prices quiet reasonable. YUM! more

Magnifique 6/14/2002

The interior design of this place is awesome (think Bart Prince), and we are delighted the food is as good. The breakfasts and lunches are delicious, the atmosphere light and airy, the service solid, the coffee great, and the music perfect. Nice surprise. Can't wait to take my friends. more
