Avoid at all costs 9/19/2009

Avoid this place. I can't believe someone called Saito friendly. He charges double what anyone else does with a terrible attitude to go with it. The place is also pretty filthy. Saw a couple huge monsterroaches patrolling the floor during dinner. And Saito can usually be found not washing his hands and smoking butts out front. NASTY! Do yourself a favor and drive another mile down sunset to KODA where the chefs are all very cool , extremely generous and the sushi is far better and fresher. Seriously. Saito is some bad fish. Throw it back. Cons: Overpriced and mean more

used to be better 8/13/2008

A place to go for true traditional sushi 7/15/2008

I arrived at the restaurant today pretty early and right away I could tell that this is a traditional Japanese sushi place: it is not too big and there was only one chef and one waitress (traditional sushi restaurants usually don't have too many chefs because they take sushi seriousely and won't risk ruining their reputation by hiring just anybody). Pros: Fresh and traditional sushi Cons: Maybe the price, though it is not uncommon to pay above $100 at some really good sushi places more

Rude and expensive! 1/21/2008

The parking is horrible--be prepared! Be careful where you step because the donut shop next door is a street person's Mecca and there is garbage everywhere. Pros: Presentation. Cons: Service was absolutely horrible. more

Fantastic sushi in unlikely spot 4/7/2007

This place has some of the best sushi I've had in LA. Fresh, inventive pieces of nigiri are the order of the day here. Ask the chef what's good and let him decide what you should eat. No spicy tuna rolls here! We had toro, snapper, spanish mackerel and scallop that were fantastic. Don't go here for the atmosphere as it is true to the strip mall locale. But the food is fabulous. Best spot for sushi in Silver Lake or Los Feliz BY FAR! Pros: excellent food, easy parking, friendly service Cons: expensive more

Nozawa watch out 3/29/2007

Beeing a sushi fan brings joy if the fish is fresh, the atmosphere doesn't really matter. not here for the who is who, but for the fish in the plate. Pros: beer Cons: lot of beer more

Too expensive 2/2/2007

I just spent $30 in about 12 minutes there. Whatever you do, do not order the albacore salad by yourself. Apparently it costs $18! I ordered that and a yellowtail roll of 6 pieces that was 6 bucks and my bill came to $25. I will admit the sushi is very fresh and very tasty, just expensive. more

not good 8/14/2006

the sushi was plain and too expensive. nothing really stood out to me to make me want to come back. wouldn't recommend. more

Great Quality for a Price 8/17/2004

Tried about 10 types of sushi, all which were very fresh and tasty. Their tuna is the only fish that was only average. This place is not inexpensive. It is not unreasonable, but not a great deal. Atmosphere is nothing special, with a workman like chef/owner, and the normal sushi bar layout. Pros: very fresh, very tasty more

Such a nice place 6/22/2003

This is my favorite sushi restaurant. The sushi chef is so friendly and personable, I feel like I'm eating over at his house. He's very helpful if you're not sure what to order. The albacore tuna is the most delicious. The eel is very good. Tried some red snapper from Japan for the first time, the chef put salt on it and told us not to dip it in soy sauce...it was very good. I leave there feeling very serene and happy. Pros: excellent sushi, very nice chef, nice waitress more

Sushi Goldmine 6/11/2002

Don't be put off by the mini mall location--this sushi is four stars all the way. Specializing in fresh fish, you won't find a lot of the fancy rolls that many lesser restaurants highlight, though the ones Chef Saito does make are quite good, if not a little too large. Tell him that you're a first time customer and he will happily help you adjust to their no menu policy--this is not the place to bring sushi novices. You have to work your way up to appreciating Saito. Some regular customers have joked that their ought to be a religion based on his sushi-making ability. Recommendations: the salmon is delicious, the halibut lemon-squeezed and very unique, and you can't go wrong with the albacore. Cold green tea is complimentary, though the sake is good as well. Pros: excellent fish, friendly service Cons: small space, rolls too big more
