Fabulous public transportation 4/15/2006

I had never lived in an area with reliable public transportation before. RIPTA was a wonderfully nice surprise, especially considering that we are a one car family right now. It is also especially helpful since I work downtown and there is no parking that isn't at least $9 a day. I find their drivers to be both pleasant and friendly, they tend to recognize you pretty quick when you normally take their routes and will always tell you to have a good day. The schedule changes, when they happen by season, sometimes seem to spring up on you. A few times I've been caught waiting for a bus on the old schedule when they haven't put out new schedules yet. The security guards are pretty active in keeping people off the bus that need to be kept off. I do think, when problems arise with a particular route/bus, that they should stick around to make sure the bus leaves before they leave their detainee unattended. One bus left 30 minutes after schedule because we had to wait for the security to come back and AGAIN forcibly remove this woman from the bus. Had they just stayed until the bus left, we could have avoided that and left on time. The problems are few and far between. I love using RIPTA's transportation services. more

impressed 4/4/2006

During a recent trip to Providence, I had many chances to use RIPTA and I was very impressed by the coverage. I used the bus after arriving at the airport to get downtown, and found it very easy to find and figure out even with no schedule or planning ahead of time. The next day, while I was downtown, I decided I wanted to go to Newport. I took the number 60 bus, and was really blown away at how pretty the route was. I saw a lighthouse! (excuse my enthusiasm, but I'm from Texas). The ride took about an hour, and I don't think I'd have preferred to drive myself even if I had rented a car. Plus, most routes seem to start early and run late, which is always a plus. more

Public Transportation 8/18/2005

If you’re stranded in Rhode Island without a car, RIPTA maybe the answer to all your public transportation needs. In Providence, RIPTA has several trolleys to take you to some of Providence’s hottest spots. From Federal Hill to the South Side to College Hill, the trolleys provide an enjoyable mode of transportation from one end of Providence to another at only $1.50 a ride. To travel outside of Providence or to other areas not on the trolley routes, RIPTA offer numerous buses that come almost every 20 minutes. more
