We have adopted two dogs from the Providence Animal rescue League. Both times we have been satisfied. PARL rescues animals who have been surrendered to them or strays. Quality care is given to all animals coming into the shelter and they make sure the animals are spayed or neutered before full ownership is given. Rather than buy a puppy from a puppy mill, you should check here first.

One of Rhode Island’s greatest attractions is Waterfire. The event usually takes place on the weekend on Waterplace Park, along the river in front of the Providence Place Mall. On nights of Waterfire, families, friends, and couples stroll along the river listening to Italian operas and see the bundles of wood being lit on the water surface. Along the river, there are artists and performers who are really popular with the kids. Best of all, the event is free and you can see it almost every weekend of the summer.

The Jewish Community Center is a fun place for kids studying judaism. They have activies planned that make learning about religion fun (as cliched as that may sound). I went there as a kid, enjoyed it, and would recommend it to Jewish parents to bring their kids. They also have nice fields out back for baseball, soccer, etc.

Want to buy flowers, a plant, plan for a large or small party?
A New Leaf has helped me with many family events. The staff has good ideas and the flowers have always been beautiful and perfect for the occasion. They have worked with me on a large purchase of office plants as well, and the plants not only were just what we ordered, but have been easy to take care of , healthy and long-lasting.
I recommend A New Leaf highly. And, to add to the positives, A New Leaf is a not-for-profit organization that helps people reenter the world of work after an illness and deserves our support.
Pros: responsive, creative, high quality for good price; a non-profit helping people with jobs
Cons: none

The Providence Bruins' games are great! The seats at the Dunkin Donut Center are so close to the action - there's really not a bad seat in the house. The players always give you a great game to watch and you'll even see the Boston Bruins' stars of tomorrow. The tickets are reasonably priced and there are often special nights or coupons available to get even more for your money.

Based on Narragansett Bay, as it name implies, Save the Bay is dedicated to restoring and protecting the Narragansett Bay. A great family outing, Save the Bay offers seal watching on its 40-persons boat and often has programs for class field trips for students to learn and explore about marine life in the Bay. I went on one of these class field trips and felt that it was very educational and hands on. Students were able to collect water samples and examine and analyze them.

More
Button Hole is small and has an unfortunate beginning (the horrible carjacking/double murder incident), but is a wonderful short course. I spent a few afternoons there hitting balls, and I was pleasantly surprised by the calm and inviting atmosphere inside Providence. Despite its dubious location, the grounds are well-maintained and screened to promote a sense of tranquility - and that's a Must-Have when playing (or trying to play) Golf. The fees are low, and they frequently offer coupons for a Free Small Bucket of balls. The grounds are well landscaped and the greens are definitely GREEN. There's a small but diverse crowd that frequents Button Hole, and everyone I've met there is friendly, quiet and respectful. This is a great place to practice or introduce your kids to Golf, or even for a date.
Enjoy!

More
There should be an email address for the Providence Water Department to register complaints, and to inform the department of broken water mains and pipes. I know of a water leak in Providence, and have had a hard time getting in touch with anyone to take care of this problem. What a waste of water. This leak has been going on for months. The Providence DPW needs to update there information center. It should be easy for people to get in touch with them. After all, they are public servants, and they should act like it.
