Now that College Hill Books is no more, the Brown bookstore is the lone bookstore on Thayer Street. It's a good bookstore, carrying a wide selection of magazines, popular and academic titles, but it's not just a bookstore. It also carries computers in the basement, Brown paraphernalia on the main floor, and upstairs has textbooks, school supplies, student dorm necessities (posters, cds, alarm clocks and bulletin boards), snacks, toiletries, and household items (bleach, dishpans). I like to go in there and browse the books. It might not have exactly the travel book or cookbook you were searching for, but it will have something interesting to read, and they can order books for you if you must have something that's not in stock. Meanwhile, if I need something that's not a book, they may already have that in stock upstairs.

Beautiful theater to see a live show. It is large enough that all the great shows come here but small enough where there isn't a bad seat in the house. They have series of plays as well as childrens shows and concerts. There is plenty of parking located right across the street and lots of great dining in the area to make it a wonderful night out.

One of the more prestigious of the IVY leagues, Brown University is most known for its strong liberal arts programs. I personally visited Brown U on several occassions and found the location of the school to be very satisfactory. Brown is located in the heart of Providence, an exciting urban setting. However, despite being located in a city the school is also a safe place. Walking at night I felt very secure because the school offers a SafeWalk for students to dorms at night free of charge for extra sense of security. My cousin attends Brown U and has nothing to say but good things. I want to go there too one day; maybe I will transfer there next year.

the brown daily herald is better than the average daily college newspaper. you get your world news briefing, which is obviously important for knowing about current events. you get your sports, mostly covering brown varsity teams. you get your editorials and opinions, which are sometimes funny or outrageous or just irksome. the comics are usually lame, unfortunately. but best of all, the daily crossword puzzle is amazing.

This is a small yarn store that carries a wide range of beautiful yarns, together with patterns, knitting supplies, and a small selection of women's apparel and shoes. The staff is very knowledgeable although not super friendly. Be prepared to love the yarn they carry, and to pay a lot of money if you want to buy any!

The Child Care Center is located at Butler Hospital, off of Blackstone Blvd. on the east side of Providence. The building is small (I think they only have around 20 kids total, infant to age 3-4) but the staff is amazing. They are incredibly loving and committed to the center. The director is excellent. It's a learning environment, yet is fun at the same time. My 21-month old daughter just loves it -- I have to tear her away at the end of the day. They currently have a wait-list for some ages so call soon if you are interested.

Since Rhode Island is “The Ocean State”, what better way to spend the day than to be in the water? Community Boating located off Narragansett Bay offers beginning sailing to advance at a minimal price. There are also other activities such as kayaking and canoeing. The instructors are very friendly and accommodating. A perfect option for those who are looking for an activity where they can get wet.

Brown/Fox Point is an excellent option for child care and education for the 3-6 year old set. The children come from a range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, the staff is competent and loving, the location is perfect, and the full-day option is great for working parents. I only wish it extended through elementary school!

More
The Laurel School (formerly PTC - a parent teacher child cooperative) is a relatively new private school on the East Side. Founded in 2002, it is certified for K-8, although it currently has students only for Grades 3 through 6, I believe. The school is reasonably priced for a private school (about $8000) and is very small (about 10 students). If you are searching for a school for your child, and you have ruled out the public schools, can't afford one of the big $15,000 plus private schools, and can't see sending your child to a parochial school, then this may be worth checking out. If you visit and find that you and your child click with the parents, children, and teacher at the school, you might have a good experience.

More
The Schechter School is a mixed bag. Some teachers are great, others have difficulty with classroom management or even with the subject matter they teach. A lot of parents, from kindergarten to eighth grade, have complaints about the school and the inability of the administration to make positive changes. On the other hand, there are parents (and children) who love the school. When my daughter was enrolled in kindergarten at Schechter, I found her classroom to be regimented yet chaotic, and my daughter did not enjoy going to school. The administration has recently changed (the Head of School left) and the school itself is going to become a community jewish day school in September 2006. The direction that this new school will take is unclear. I'm watching the developments to see what happens.
